"To promote & preserve the Morgan Breed, serve MHAO members,
& support the unity of the Morgan community."
|
|
|
Is this rain ever going to end or at least lessen? I am betting you are as tired of it as I am. People are definitely taking advantage of the few nice days we have had. i can feel all the pent up energy out there..... and excitement as the new show season begins.
I wish everyone good luck at their shows, on their rides, drives, or time spent with their horses. My hope is that we can all dust off the winter and start having some springtime fun. I ask all members of the Northwest Morgan community to share what they are doing via the MHAO Facebook page and this newsletter. All activities involving Morgan horses add to the excitement around our breed and encourage possible future members to get involved with the club. We need to showcase the versatility of our breed and to help increase the number of members we have so MHAO can do more to support this wonderful breed and offer more benefits to our membership. I hope everyone will help us in this effort. All you need to do is share what you are doing and to invite other Morgan enthusiasts you know or meet to join MHAO.
If you would like to be more involved with the club, your help would be welcomed. Let us know. You will find contact information for the MHAO Board of Directors at the end of this newsletter along with schedules of activities you might be interested in. This newsletter also offers free classified listings, and accepts paid ads in various sizes. Inner trade is always encouraged and supported.
I ask all of you for your feedback about this newsletter and our website. These are the tools we use for members to communicate with each other and for communication between the MHAO Board of Directors and the membership. This is your club.
Let's talk!
Meantime, our plans and preparations for the Oregon Morgan Classic are progressing well. This year will be truly special. We are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of a Morgan Regional Show in the Northwest. Additionally, this will likely be the last year for an all Morgan horse show in Oregon and the Northwest for the foreseeable future. Don't miss this opportunity to come together as the Morgan community whether to compete, help, sponsor this fun event, or just to see and mingle with long time friends. We all share a love for the Morgan breed.
We hope to see you there!
Gay Adams, MHAO President
More information about the show & other activities is included in this newsletter.

April 19th, 2017. Called to order at 7:35pm.
Attendees included: Gay Adams, Dallas Bolen, Kathy Christensen, Carol Dombrowsky, John Shaver, Nancy Eidam and David Silver.
Members not in attendance: Sharon Harper (resigned), Karen Breckenridge, Kathy DeFazio, Anne Margaret Korver, Diane Pixlee.
Quorum present
Reports
- Treasurer: Gay reported for Karen who was unable to attend.
General checking $7,569, OMC $2,959, Futurity $2,900, General Savings $25,481. Total $38,910. P&L by class (committee) was distributed. Board members & Committee Chairs are to contact Karen with any questions. A copy of the 2017 budget was also distributed to compare to. So far we appear to be on track.
- OMC: Nancy had lots to report.
- She had an OMC meeting with Paula Hague at the Oregon Horse Center to work on show details on the 16th. Major Defoe and OHC are going to sponsor a welcome spaghetti dinnerTuesday at 5pm following the Trainer’s & Exhibitor’s meeting at 4:30pm. Friday night 4:30pm-6pm will be an exhibitors gala where tickets cost $10, OMC will pick up the remainder of the bill. A new PA system will be available. Chicken dinner. Hall of Fame & other awards presented at gala. Friday night, last class will be a freestyle class. Tables will be set-up on mezzanine with reserved tables. Barns to bring desserts. This in lieu of aisle party to stay in line with regulations & to still serve same purpose.
- Silent auction will be set up in restaurant so it can be locked up at night.
- Coffee & doughnuts available in front of Crown Morgans each morning at 6am.
- Premium books are at the Printer
- Far West has generously given garlands, medals, and ribbons for our championship classes. OMC is providing the medals, awards, and ribbons for the qualifying classes.
- Show Highpoint awards for: Jr Exhib (SS HS WS) as well as high point Jr Exhib and Reserve. Working western highpoint, Versatility high point where you have to compete in 5 of 8 divisions.
- Youth Of The Year (YOY) – Thursday after the last class, Saturday at noon is the riding. Diane Pixlee is organizing. New this year, any youth who scores over 800 points qualifies for OKC. It was proposed that if the winner can’t go to OKC, we use the $400 scholarship money to send the runner up who also qualified.
- David suggested a 4H/FFA judging event where we invite them to come sit in the stands and judge classes. More details on this at the May meeting. Maybe an open house to go with it. David & Nancy to talk.
- Flag Presentation: Every evening except Wednesday. We will need volunteers. Board made some suggestions.
- Carole Bradford will take care of decorating central ring using 60th anniversary theme. Maybe a fountain. White picket fence & flowers. Show banner & Futurity banner.
- Costume class will have a Disney theme.
- Sponsorships: Everyone needs to help with sponsorships. Ask locally to businesses for $ and donations for prizes as well. Also for Silent Auction
- Awards- need to find someone to organize awards & silent auction. It was suggested to ask Dave & Dianne Conser and Debbie Jondahl. Special request for volunteers went out via email.
- Nancy looking for help to call membership & others for class sponsorships.
- Oregon Horse Center will be our provider for large screen TV’s to run ads, show schedule, thank our sponsors, etc. David Lionberger will put the CD’s together for us. Need sponsors & their ads & all other info to David by June 1.
- End of Year Banquet & High Point: Everyone agreed on Haydens Grill again. By next meeting, need ideas from Board on possible speaker/s. Gay will reaffirm our reservation.
- Futurity – Currently 39 horses entered. 2 are 2017 foals. Time to get futurity horse pictures in to Gay. Ads being taken now for Futurity booklet. Leslie available for any help needed in creating ads. Close date is June1.
- Stallion Auction- Raised $11,100 from stallion services donated! Most successful auction so far. Most bidders have paid. Still collecting on a few. Ahead of budget.
- Website – Nothing new to report. Still working on getting history page put together. Dallas will follow with Lillian Smith about helping do summary write ups. It was decided that we do not want to be able to pay OMC entries online thru the website. People can pay via credit card. We need to have better control of OMC funds & be sure they are processed thru the OMC Committee due to separate account and accounting for the show.
- Promotion – Kathy Christensen said the NW Horse Expo had lots of people in the door. Many stopped at booth saying they have either owned a Morgan, know someone who owned a Morgan or wanted to own a Morgan. Many did not know that MHAO existed. Great publicity. Shelley’s sales sheet handed out a lot. 41 people asked for more info on club. Kathy sending out information to them and membership forms. Kathy suggested next year to focus our efforts on one expo and not try to do all three local expos. We did receive a $300 grant from AMHA to help pay for our trade show costs. Kathy was contacted by Karissa Dishon from 4H extension to help find Morgans for the state 4H judging in Redmond, Oregon April 29th. Kathy was able to coordinate a group of Morgans for the kids to judge.
- Membership: Kathy Christensen – Wants to change the way we do membership. Now that she is sole point of contact she wants to keep things from falling through the cracks. She wants to get info and payments at the same time. Fill out app and ask for CC info instead of having people pay direct through the website. Kathy volunteered to continue with Membership next year to help get some structure and continuity to the way we do things. We have 70 members currently compared to 124 shown in 2015-2016 directory. Kathy sending out reminders for those not renewed yet.
- Open Incentive: Carol Dombrowsky – Only two submissions so far this year. Even though budget is tight, we want to continue to support & promote this program. Our club supports all Morgan horse owners, not just those who show.
- Stable Sheet: Gay – Sent via email to all members with email addresses. On average only about 60% of the membership who receive the emailed newsletter are opening, or 80-90 people. According to the statistics of who read it, only 9 people went past page 1 on the digital copy. Be sure to see the “click here” spot – click to continue reading. There were 3 pages on last two issues. Not mailing any newsletters. Still need an editor to do a complete job.
- Board Nominations: David is going to pursue Emily Carlson to be on the board. Kathy Christensen will ask Lenore & Leann. We have two Board positions that were declared at our last election but were not filled. Since election, Sharon Harper and Anna Lowden have had to resign due to changes in their personal lives. That gives us 4 possible positions that can be filled by appointment. With our search, one new person needs to agree to come on board as our new Secretary. Also need to start looking for candidates for November election.
- MHAO Trail Program: On hold until after OMC.
Unfinished business-- Policy and Procedure Manual: Gay has encouraged us to Read the PPM draft that she has designed. Discussed pages 4-9
- “Strategic Plan”. It was decided that we need to work on a 3 year detailed and 5 year outline plan.
- “Code of Conduct” – need to develop and have each member sign a form.
- “Conflict of Interest” – Gay shared that she was approached by an MHAO member who was concerned over a possible conflict of interest for Gay because of Gay being on the boards of multiple horse clubs/events/groups. Board discussed and found no conflict.
- Pages 4-9:. Everyone to read in detail & submit any suggested changes to Gay prior to next meeting May 17th. Board to approve those pages at that time. Next reading assignment will be sent out via email prior to the May 17th meeting. Please read prior to the May meeting & be ready to discuss. Gay will recirculate the Policy & Procedure Manual draft.
New business
- Plaque for Vern Serex – Nancy made a motion to provide a plaque of appreciation to Vern Serex. David Seconded. All were in favor. Nancy to follow on this. David is going to work on getting a custom wooden frame for a photo of Vern with a plaque.
- Margo’s MHAO Ads Facebook Page – Gay asked if we wanted to do anything about Margo’s FB page she created under the club name. The consensus was that unless it starts causing problems, that we won’t approach her about it. Only concern was unauthorized use of the club name. Members are using the site. Seems to be popular and to be filling a need.
- We’ve lost Sharon Harper as Secretary and Anna Lowden as a Director, we need to work on replacing them and maybe also filling the 2 declared Board positions not filled last November.
Announcements: Next Meeting, May 17th 7:30 PM
Watch for April Minutes to be sent out to Board via email for approval prior to next meeting. Need approval right away so we can publish in Stable Sheet first week of May.
Respectfully submitted by Dallas Bolen, filling in as Secretary for this meeting
Approved as corrected 5/4/2017

Welcome New Members
to MHAO
|

If you as an MHAO member sell a Morgan horse to someone who is not a member of MHAO, they are entitled to a free membership in MHAO for the year of that purchase. Help your club by having the buyer fill out a membership form. At the bottom in lieu of including a payment they would write in:
"purchased a Morgan horse from........(name of member/seller).
And if you know or meet people who own a Morgan or who are interested in supporting the breed but are not a member of MHAO, please encourage them to join.
