From Your Board Of Directors
|
Hi all,
Whew! We made it thru April. It was certainly a whirlwind. Now the Key Classic is upon us. Best of luck to all who are attending! It sounds like it is going to be a very special show.
For your MHAO Board, our attention is turning toward the Oregon Morgan Classic and all the things that feed into it. We are looking for applications for the MHAO Alex Mooney Memorial Scholarship. Get those in by May 15th to Sara Breyman. We are seeking vendors and donations to the OMC Silent Auction. See the main body of this newsletter for more information. As always, we are seeking sponsors. Let us hear from you by May 27th if you are able to help.
| |
|
|
Our stallion service auction was successful and brought in over $12,000. After expenses, proceeds from the auction provide the prize money for our Futurity. Don't forget to get your foals nominated. We are looking for ads to go into the 2024 MHAO Futurity booklet, and let's talk about ads for the MHAO membership directory while we are talking. We want to encourage MHAO members to support one another and to do all we can to support your success.
The weather has been crazy, bouncing back and forth from cold and wet to teasing us about summer. Warm weather is coming. Enjoy the Spring, do well at all your endeavors, and we look forward to seeing you at the Oregon Morgan Classic.

Oregon AgFest ~
Oregon State Fairgrounds
April 27-28, 2024
| |
|
This past weekend (April 27-28, 2024) we represented the Morgan horse and Morgan Horse Assoc of Oregon at Oregon Ag Fest. Littlewood Chinook GCH was our rep, as she did SO WELL last year, so patient and not one nibbled finger. She was the ONLY horse, and was amazing once again this year.
Gate attendance was reported as 25,000 for the weekend. We handed out 1,000+ pre-bagged Morgan promotional material including brochures, coloring page, tattoo, a sticker., and a "save the date" postcard for OMC.
These promotional bags will also be given to all the state FFA judging contestants at Oregon State University Monday, May 6th, as we are providing a class of Morgan mares for judging.
We have already been invited back for Oregon Ag Fest 2025 and look forward to participating!
| |
Our thanks to Erin Silver, Lorraine Beaumont for pulling this all together as well as to anyone else who helped.

Into the Mystik: A Kentucky Derby Thriller
It was a picture-perfect finish for Mystik Dan in the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby.
As far as dramatic endings go, Saturday’s edition of the $5 million, Grade 1 classic at Churchill Downs was one for the horse racing ages.
Sent on his way at 18-1, Mystik Dan, trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., used a rail-skimming trip to separate himself from the pack in early stretch.
Mid-way down the lane, his lead began to dwindle as the hard-charging duo of Sierra Leone and Forever Young (JPN) came calling and took aim at the frontrunner.
The crescendo from the crowd of 156,710 – the most since 157,813 watched Justify win in 2018 – grew louder with each stride in the final yards of the 1 ¼-mile race.
Hernandez, in search of his first Derby Crown, implored Mystik Dan to hold on, while Sierra Leone, second choice on the tote board, and Forever Young, the betting public’s third choice, enveloped the leader at the finish line.
Click here for more information and to watch a video of the race.

A finish like this has not happened since 1947.

Beverly Stoebeck Olson
AUGUST 2, 1931 – APRIL 18, 2024
| |
|
Beverley Anne Olson, age 92, of Sultan, Washington passed away on Thursday, April 18 2024
Beverley Anne Stoebuck Olson was born in Wichita, Kansas, August 2nd, 1931, the 2nd child of Donice Brees Stoebuck and William Douglas Stoebuck. She had one sibling, Bill, who preceded her in death.
Beverley's lifelong passions were family, Morgan horses, and real estate.
Beverley married Richard Olson, who worked at a stable near Wichita. During their partnership of 67 years they raised 5 children starting in Kansas, and ending in Washington state. Beverley was an excellent mother and grandmother, supportive of her large family’s many endeavors. She always included her kids in her horsey adventures and garnered great devotion from her 25 grandchildren. Beverley loved all animals and counted her furry menagerie as dear family members.
Beverley acquired her first Morgan horse when she was 14. This started a love affair with Morgans, which provided many adventures and much delight throughout her life. As newlyweds Beverley and Richard bought a small farm and began their dream of raising Morgans near Wichita. Beverley loved bloodlines and history. She spent countless hours researching Morgan history, writing articles for the Morgan magazine and promoting Morgan horses locally, and on the national scene. In the early 1960’s, when the young family moved to the Seattle area, they brought their horses with them, and Beverley continued in her activities on behalf of the breed. Their farm, Shiloh Morgans, produced dozens of lovely horses for family pleasure, as well as numerous national champions.
A national figure in the Morgan horse world, Beverley was inducted into the American Morgan Horse Association Hall of Fame. She also received achievement awards nationally, regionally and locally for her devotion to the breed. In particular, she was a regular fixture of the Morgan Grand Nationals each fall for decades and showed her own horses well into her 80’s. Beverley’s dearest lifelong friends are in the Morgan community.
A deep love of real estate was instilled in her by both of her parents. Beverley’s real estate ventures became a prominent income stream for the family, funding many of their passions as well as her own.
Beverley was a steadfast church member all of her life. In recent years, she was pleased to be in the founding group of "Take the Next Step" ministries in Monroe, Washington. Over the years, she taught a lot of Sunday school classes, kept many church nurseries and contributed to numerous mission organizations.
After a long full life, Beverley died at peace, surrounded by family on April 18, 2024 in Monroe, Washington. She is survived by her 5 children: Rick Olson, Kathy Cramer, Rob Olson, Gretchen Wilson and Paul Olson; their spouses, kids and grandkids. Beverley will be missed by family and friends.
Her funeral was held on April 29th.

At Key Classic, there was a living memorial for Beverly Olson, a long time supporter and horse lover. She will be missed by so many.
Many thanks to her daughter Gretchen for this memorial.
"Beverly Olson passed away April 18th. 60 Years ago the Morgan club of Washington state wanted to start a spring Morgan show. My mom, Beverley Olson, was on that show committee and insisted the show be on Mother's Day. She reasoned, since "most moms wanted to see horses", it would be a great way to attract new families to the breed. Every year since, a member of my family has been at what we called the "Mother's Day show".
For the first decades Mom helped run the show, while many of our family members participated: brothers in costume classes, egg and spoon races, me and dad in a variety of disciplines, my sisters 4h project....then eventually mom's grandkids too. In the last 25 years mom has been the one showing her beautiful Morgans.
But we all knew that if we wanted to see our mom on Mother's Day, we'd need to come to the show, enjoy a delicious grandstand lunch and share time with Beverley at the place she'd rather be more than anywhere on earth....a horse show!
To all the exhibitors, thank you for sharing and showing at my mom's favorite "Mother's Day show" !

Beverley, somehow the Morgan world in the Northwest will not seem quite right without you. I will always remember your generous heart, and how knowledgeable you were about everything Morgan. I tried to sit near you at the shows so I could hear the things you would say. We will all hold your memory in our hearts, and wish strength and comfort to your family and friends. We will all miss you.
