Hi Everyone,
Two more months left in this year..not sure how you feel but I feel like this year has flown by. It seems like yesterday we were embracing the warmth of springtime and here we are looking at the chill of the autumn air. Before you know it, the holidays will be here and the start of a new year will follow closely behind.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our fellow MHAO members who traveled back to the Morgan Grand Nationals and proudly represented the Pacific Northwest. There were several Grand National and World Championships garnered by the folks from the PNW as well as many top 5 and top 10 placings. It is safe to say that the PNW demonstrated to the rest of the country the quality of horses and riders we have. Well done!

On Sunday, November 14th we will be holding our annual General Membership Meeting, Election, and Award Ceremony via conference call. As was previously mentioned, the Board decided not to hold an in person format due to the surge of COVID. I understand that this is quite a departure from the norm, but it was felt that we should be a little more cautious and hold it virtually. Keep your fingers crossed that next year we can all get together at this annual event. I have to say, I will miss seeing all your smiling faces.
To "attend" the event, please call (267) 807-9601 and when prompted key in the ID number of 149-352-688# and you will be able to join the meeting. The program will start promptly at 1:00pm and will begin with a brief General Membership Meeting followed by election results and the announcement of our Award Winners for this year's high point program. I hope that you will attend and join in congratulating the high point winners for 2020 & 2021.
Finally I would like to say a big thank you to Karen Weiderman, Martha Woodland and Shirley Champion for your service on the MHAO Board. These three ladies gave unselfishly to the board and the membership and will be greatly missed. Thank you for all you did!
Life may throw a curve ball every now and then, but there is still much to be thankful for, and it certainly has been a crazy year. But I for one am thankful for the camaraderie and friendships I have found in being a part of MHAO & the Morgan community. To each and every one of you I would like to extend warm wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Kathy Christensen, MHAO President

Remember To Vote!
The 2021 MHAO Election Is Being Conducted Online
|
|
We are trying something different this year. Your 2021 ballot was emailed to you on October 17th and a reminder was sent to those who hadn't voted yet on November 1st. Only one more reminder will be sent. If you haven't voted yet, please do so now. It is so easy! Just follow the link on your email. Paper ballots were mailed to those without an email address along with a return envelope. Ample room is provided for write-ins.
If you didn't get a ballot but would like to be a member for the future, we would love to have you join the club. Click here to download a membership form. Any dues paid now will apply toward next year's membership.
This method of voting is a trial. If you like it, we will need to change our By-Laws to accommodate the possibility of using online voting going forward.
Here is a list of the candidates as well as the recommended change to our By-Laws.
These By-Law changes give us the "option" for online voting for the future.
Voting is open from October 17th until noon on November 14th.
Check your email and vote today!

Below is the recommended new paragraph 4.3 of the MHAO By-Laws. These changes will give us the option to allow future online voting. Current wording is provided on the ballot so you can see the difference between the old paragraph and the new one:
*****
Section 4.3 Nomination, Election and Term:
Sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting in November, the Board of Directors shall make known to the membership, by notice in the corporate publication or by other means, positions to be vacated in the coming year and request candidates for such positions. The Board shall prepare a ballot, setting forth one (1) or more candidates for each position to be vacated, along with space for write-in candidates. Such ballot bearing a unique ID number to prevent double voting shall be made available to the member in paper form and/or electronically thirty (30) days prior to the November meeting. A paper ballot shall be mailed together with a self-addressed envelope if requested of the Secretary or Membership Chair. An electronic ballot may be delivered in PDF form or via an online system. Numbered ballots may be returned by mail to the Secretary or Membership Chair, be voted on via the online system, or be brought in person to the Annual November meeting. A ballot mailed or voted on prior to the meeting may be retrieved by the member before the annual meeting is called to order and the final vote is counted.
Ballots shall be opened and/or counted by the Secretary or appointed tellers at the annual business meeting.
*****
Be sure to vote on this change when you receive your ballot. Come to the meeting and let us know what you think of our trial to vote online this year.
Online voting is so easy!

MHAO Needs Your Support & Input

Membership renewals will come out in mid-November via email. For those without an email address, your renewal will be mailed to you. If MHAO is to continue offering its programs including the Oregon Morgan Classic, we need your support. Please make any changes on your list of horses, etc. and email or mail back your membership renewal as soon as you can, but no later than March 1st. New members or those who have not joined for awhile are always welcome. These are hard times for clubs. We need your support so we can support you.

Alert to all MHAO members
|
As an MHAO member, if you sell a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner, that first time Morgan owner qualifies for a free MHAO membership in the year of purchase. Fill out a membership form for them and send it to Doana. Be sure to make a note that they purchased their horse from you. Again, the horse needs to be purchased from an MHAO member to qualify, & it needs to be the new owner's first Morgan. We will do all we can to earn their membership renewal for a fee from that first year forward.
|
|
Help MHAO grow, and help that new Morgan owner get integrated into the Morgan community. We look forward to welcoming them. They do not need to reside in Oregon.
|
|
You can renew your membership now!
We are so grateful for our members!
Without you MHAO & its programs would not exist.

From Morgan Sport Resource
|
|
To be ranked in the USDF Year-end Awards a horse needs eight scores from four USEF/USDF competitions from four different judges (four scores for FEI), with at least two at 60% or higher from the highest level of the test, and a final median score of 60% or more. There are a significant number of Morgans that have fullfilled these requirements, but are not eligible for All-Breeds Awards, and we want to make sure everyone is recognized for their achievements.
Please take a moment to browse the pictures that many of the riders were kind enough to send. These Morgans worked hard to be ranked, and we congratulate them on their achievement!

Something To Think About Regarding Our Trainers
|
|
“On the eve of US nationals -
Imagine a performance based job, where your achievements are measured hour by hour and you can be replaced at any moment without any warning. Imagine a job where your ability is often measured by people with less experience, qualifications or knowledge. But you're judged by them anyway.
Imagine doing this job with no added benefits. No sick pay. No holiday pay. No pension. No company car. No medical insurance. We pay for our own insurance, compulsory training and car expenses.
A regular income is never guaranteed and in fact, is often lost completely, very last minute due to bad weather, illness or injury or just because a client changed their minds.
So why do we do it?
The answer is simple... Passion.
- Passion for equine welfare, knowing that by educating the rider, their horses will be happier, healthier and better able to perform at their discipline.
- Passion for helping others to experience that euphoria when it goes right, when that goal is smashed and and when they achieve that feeling of absolute harmony between them and their horse. We know what that feels like and we want every rider we encounter to feel it too.
- Passion for supporting riders when it all comes crashing down. We also know that feeling all too well. When it feels impossible, we feel your tears, the fear, the falls and the failures as though it is our own.
- It's our passion for the sport, our passion for educating the next generation of equestrians and our passion for equestrian welfare that inspires us to do this job.
- We wipe your tears and we cheer you on, we sit up late planning the steps towards your goals, we listen to your late night calls, we work with your vets, physios and farriers, we help at your first show, with your outfits and tack.
- Your trainer cares passionately about you and your horse. We put in so much more than the hour a week that you book. I am incredibly blessed to have the most incredible clients and to be able to earn a living doing the thing I love most.
A big shout out to the fellow trainers; we are respectful of each other, we need AND rely upon one another to achieve a common goal. Good luck everyone and enjoy the ride!”

IEA - Interscholastic Equestrian Association
|
|
The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) is looking for MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL RIDERS (grades 4th – 12th) and DRESSAGE INSTRUCTORS to join or start an existing DRESSAGE TEAM in Seattle & Portland areas.
IEA’s newest discipline is expanding in your area. Looking for riders with at least one year of riding instruction. IEA utilizes a draw-based (catch-ride) competition format whereby riders are given an unfamiliar mount to compete on the day of the show. No rider needs to own a horse or tack!
IEA Dressage offers classes from beginner walk-trot up to Varsity Open. There are 3 levels for middle school riders – Beginner (walk/trot and walk/trot/canter) Dressage Seat Equitation (DSE), Novice (walk/trot/canter) Test and DSE; and Intermediate Test and DSE. Riders compete on teams in up to 5 shows per IEA season.
JOIN AN EXISTING TEAM NOW OR START A NEW TEAM TODAY!
We have a few teams in these areas already and are looking for new teams to be able to hold competitions for a full season.

Why 'Waste Money' On Horses
|
|
My daughter turned sixteen years old today; which is a milestone for most people. Besides looking at baby photos
and childhood trinkets with her, I took time to reflect on the young woman my daughter had become and the choices
she would face in the future. As I looked at her I could see the athlete she was, and determined woman she would soon be.
I started thinking about some of the girls we knew in our town who were already pregnant, pierced in several places,
hair every color under the sun, drop- outs, drug addicts and on the fast track to nowhere, seeking surface identities because they had no inner self-esteem.
The parents of these same girls have asked me why I 'waste' money on horses so my daughter can ride. I'm
told she will grow out of it, lose interest, discover boys and all kinds of things that try to pin the current generation's 'slacker' label on my child. I don't
think it will happen, I think she will love and have horses all her life.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she has compassion. She knows that we must take special care of the very young and the very old. We must make sure those without voices to speak of their pain are still cared for.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she learned responsibility for others than herself. She learned that
regardless of the weather you must still care for those you have the stewardship of. There are no 'days off' just because you don't feel like being a horse owner
that day. She learned that for every hour of fun you have there are days of hard slogging work you must do first.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she learned not to be afraid of getting dirty and that appearances don't
matter to most of the breathing things in the world we live in. Horses do not care about designer clothes, jewelry, pretty hairdos or anything else we put on our
bodies to try to impress others. What a horse cares about are your abilities to work within his natural world, he doesn't care if you're wearing $80.00 jeans while you do it.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she learned about sex and how it can both enrich and complicate lives. She learned that it only takes one time to produce a baby, and the only way to ensure babies aren't produced is not to
breed. She learned how babies are planned, made, born and, sadly, sometimes die before reaching their potential. She learned how sleepless nights and trying to outsmart a crafty old broodmare could result in getting to see, as non-horse owning people rarely do, the birth of a true miracle.
|
|
Because my daughter grew up with horses she understands the value of money. Every dollar can be translated into bales of hay, bags of feed or farrier visits. Purchasing non-necessities during lean times can mean the difference
between feed and good care, or neglect and starvation. She has learned to judge the level of her care against the care she sees provided by others and to make sure her standards never lower, and only increase as her knowledge grows.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she has learned to learn on her own. She has had teachers that cannot speak, nor write, nor communicate beyond body language and reactions. She has had to learn to 'read' her surroundings for both safe and unsafe objects, to look for hazards where others might only see a pretty meadow. She has learned to judge people as she judges horses. She looks beyond appearances and trappings to see what is within.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she has learned sportsmanship to a high degree. Everyone that competes fairly is a winner. Trophies and ribbons may prove someone a winner, but they do not prove someone is a horseman. She has also learned that some people will do anything to win, regardless of who it hurts. She knows that those who will cheat in the show ring will also cheat in every other aspect of their life and are not to be trusted.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she has self-esteem and an engaging personality. She can talk to
anyone she meets with confidence, because she has to express herself to her horse with more than words. She
knows the satisfaction of strolling and teaching a 1000 pound animal that will yield willingly to her gentle touch
and ignore the more forceful and inept handling of those stronger than she is. She holds herself with poise and
professionalism in the company of those far older than herself.
Because my daughter grew up with horses she has learned to plan ahead. She knows that choices made today can affect what happens five years down the road. She knows that you cannot care for and protect your investments without
savings to fall back on. She knows the value of land and buildings. And that caring for your vehicle can mean the
difference between easy travel or being stranded on the side of the road with a four horse trailer on a hot day.
When I look at what she has learned and what it will help her become, I can honestly say that I haven't 'wasted' a
penny on providing her with horses. I only wish that all children had the same opportunities to learn these lessons from horses before setting out on the road to
adulthood.
|
|
Author unknown.
This one is about why kids need horses. I believe we all do. I add these things to this newsletter to help you when you are trying to talk to others about why you chose horses. I have found it is not always easy to explain. I hope these things help. We need to draw more people into our horse world. The world needs horses.
Thank you Nancy Eidam for sharing this.

"Hello, my name is Allison Hall, I am 19 years old and I will be competing in this year's National Youth of the Year contest! I am currently attending Green River College, where I major in Forensic Science, while also obtaining a general Associate's degree. I ride and show in the Western Pleasure division with my Morgan mare Manchester Once N Again (Bailey) at Timbercreek Stables in Maple Valley, Washington under the guidance of my wonderful trainer, Linda Collins. Along with riding and showing Morgan horses, I am also the Vice President of the American Morgan Horse Association Youth Council and the Youth Liaison for the Morgan Horse Club of Washington State. In 2021, I won the Gladys Koehne Youth Inspirational Award through the Morgan Horse Club of Washington State. One thing that sets me apart is my genuine love for everything Morgan horses. When I am working on youth of the year, I not only memorize facts in exchange for ribbons, I memorize facts to use in my riding and general knowledge of horses. My goal is always to improve myself and my riding along with learn more about the Morgan horse. I would like to be selected as the outstanding Morgan Youth of the Year because I would like to show that hard work and passion can pay off. I would also like to win because I would love to run local youth of the year contests and help other youth compete at nationals. Thank you for this opportunity!"
3rd place - Written Test Portion
From Allison: I am so happy that I was able to compete in this contest again this year!! Man, was it tough. I am so proud of each and every one of you. This contest is hard and everyone gave it their all. Thank you Nicole Scovotti, Molly McGuill, and Carrie for running this amazing contest. I will definitely be back!

Lucia (Lulu) Dizon
Oregon Morgan Classic
|
"My name is Lulu Dizon and I am incredibly excited to be competing in this year's Youth of the Year contest. Some information about me is that I'm 16, I have an amazing family with one brother and one sister, I absolutely adore animals including my 6 pets, and I currently attend Del Oro High School as a junior. A unique aspect of Del Oro is that they had an Equestrian Team that I was a part of. Unfortunately due to covid the team doesn't exist anymore. I am still very active in the horse community, as I ride and work at Grand Finale Stables. My trainer, Megan Gallager, has really been a big part in the growth of my career in the Morgan Horse world. Because of her, and the continuous support from my family, I have been able to compete at many horse shows throughout the years. It is incredible to look back and remember the first schooling show I did on a little buckskin Morgan, to now 6 years later, and I am attending The Morgan Grand Nationals for the first time. Throughout those years I have been faced with challenges that have facilitated my learning and horsemanship skills. 5 years ago I was given my very first horse, Stanley. He is a stunning 16.1 hand bay Morgan and he is my whole world. He was an energetic, green five year old, and I was a novice 12 year old, with not even half the knowledge I have now. The beginning of our journey was tough, but we managed to grow and bond together into the great team we are now. Showing him this past year has been a dream and we have been doing considerably well at major shows such as: The Oregon Morgan Classic, The Morgan Medallion, and Springfest. The experience of the contest alone is going to be incredible, but I would love to be selected as the Youth of the Year because it is a really cool achievement that I could be proud of for the rest of my life."

Cassidy Moore
C-Fair Morgan Regional
|
|
My name is Cassidy Moore, and I qualified for GN Youth of the Year at C-Fair Morgan Regional. I have competed in the Jr. Invitational for 4 years and won two times in 2017 and 2018, as well as being the recipient of the Cecil E. Brown Sportsmanship Award in 2019. I am a recent owner of my own Morgan Horse, C-King Solar Flaire, and we plan to show next season in Dressage, Hunter Pleasure and Equitation, Sport Horse, and Showmanship. I’ve been riding practically since I was born, and I have always been in the Morgan Horse World. My mom rode Morgans and won the Youth of the Year contest before me. I would like to be selected as the Outstanding Morgan Youth of the Year 2021 because I have seen how many amazing opportunities it can give people and how life changing it can be to win. I would be so honored to be an ambassador for this amazing breed.
2nd in Judging, 6th in Speech
From Jennie Moore: So proud of my girl in her first year doing the youth contest- she placed 6th in speech and 2nd in judging out of 16 very talented young women from around the country. She is already looking forward to next year and all the fun and hard work that will come in between.
We are so proud of all of you!
You represented the Western Region very well!

Faith's First Impression GCH aka Nick
(DFM Keep The Faith x KA Bar Bon Aimee)
|
|
|
|
Nick was the first foal by DFM Keep The Faith and the first World Champion shown by Forest Nealon with Tom Tornatore tailing. Leanne & Leroy Roth owned him his whole life. He was a real family horse. Leanne showed him right to the end of his life, most recently adding Ranch classes. He was truly a versatile Morgan horse.
Nick is pictured on the left with Leanne Roth in the first picture, He was a good trail partner with Domingo ridden by Leanne's twin sister, Lenore Smith. The second photo shows Leanne & Leslie Arnould winning the 2017 Pro-Am class at the Oregon Morgan Classic. The last photo is Leroy on Nick.
From Leanne: "Last night my Nickers crossed the rainbow bridge. It was quick & even though it hurts like hell, at least I know he didn't suffer. He was here, then he was gone. I am completely devastated at his passing. I knew eventually it would happen but I was waiting for him to tell me when. But he never did. He went out on top. He has been a huge part of the past 27 years of my life & I have been so incredibly honored to have taken care of him & he has taken care of me & others. He wore many hats in his lifetime. 1997 WC Junior Gelding, 1997 World Futurity 2 yr old Gelding, Grand National 2 yr old Gelding, show horse, leadline horse, team penning, trail horse, lesson horse, the list goes on & on. He was my dream maker come true & he loved my husband Leroy more than anyone. My heart is going to hurt for a long time with this huge loss but I will be forever grateful for the memories."

Our heart goes out to the Roth family.
