From Your Board Of Directors
President's Message

Happy November MHAO members!
I would like to start off with a hearty congratulations to all those who traveled back to the Morgan Grand National in Oklahoma representing the Pacific Northwest. I must say that our region was well represented and showed to the rest of the country the quality of Morgans we have in our area. Multiple world and national titles as well as many top 5 and top 10’s were garnered by horse and riders from the PNW. No matter if you ribboned or not, you made us all proud of your accomplishment in being at the Grand National. I could not be any prouder of all those that were there. Congratulations go out to everyone!
November is a busy month for the club with club events and club business. The first event that we are having is a See’s candy fundraiser on line. We have done this event in the past and we thought that we would repeat it around the holidays. Our “candy store” opened on Nov.1st and will stay active until Dec.2nd. Candy orders will start to be delivered on Nov.11th and will continue through the duration of the fundraiser. We have selected a wide variety of See’s products as well as gift cards that can be purchased. A portion of the sales will go to the club as profit. Here is a great opportunity to get some delicious candy to give as a gift (or for you) and at the same time help support MHAO and the programs we offer. For your convenience, I have added the link to the store to help you make your selection and purchase. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. https://www.yumraising.com/secure/morganhao_morgan_horse_association_of_oregon84/Kat_Chr7567/candy
The next event is our annual General Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet to be held in the Dye House at the Willamette Heritage Center in Salem. Doors open at 12:30pm with a light lunch being served during our meeting.  Lunch is provided by MHAO. Our guest speaker is Dr. Ryan Scholz, State Veterinarian, Oregon
Department of Agriculture - Animal Health presenting the topic of EHV and Biosecurity. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and become more informed about this virus. Following his presentation we will go to the awards portion of the day and salute our high point winners. We have also included in the events of the day, a dessert silent auction. Bring a dessert, store bought or homemade, and add it to the silent auction! It’s a great way to go home with a tasty treat!  Please RSVP to Erin Silver at silvermesamorgans@msn.com if you are planning on attending. We hope to see you there.
Finally, the last club business is voting for and announcing your new Board Of Directors at the General Membership Meeting. Electronic ballots went out to the membership requesting your vote. During the meeting, we will be announcing the new board, including your new President.  This leads me to say it was a pleasure to serve as your president for the past two years. I hope that I was able to help advance the mission of the club and to help promote our breed. You will have a wonderful board next year and they look forward to working for you. Please consider helping in volunteering your time and help to them. . I encourage each and every one of you to be active in this club..this club is for you! In the meantime, enjoy your Morgans..they are the best horses around!

Nora Mains on Her Long Distance Championship Ride On Marvelous Portia
Friday, September 30, through Sunday, October 2 in Gooding, Idaho
I managed a write up of our experience at the Autumn Sun AHA/AMHA Distance Championships. Enjoy! I sure did!

On October 2, 2022 my marvelous Morgan mare and I had the opportunity to compete at the Distance Horse National Championships in both the American Morgan Horse Association 25 Mile National Championships and the 25-mile AERC/AHA Autumn Sun Open Limited Distance ride in Gooding, Idaho. We earned the Reserve Championship award for the AMHA Championship and placed seventh in the Open LD ride earning a Top-10 award.

2022 was a Green Light riding year for my Marvelous Portia and I. In our third distance riding season we competed in twice as many Limited Distance rides than the previous season, and were free of injury, fires and serious illness.

Marvelous Portia is just that. She is marvelous. Bred by Sue and Dale Beach (Marvelous Intrigue X MEMC Ladyhawke) she is a 2011 tall and leggy 15.3 Buckskin Splash White mare. Looking for a new Morgan horse at age 60 I had intended to purchase an eight or nine-year-old, been there-done-that 14.3 bay gelding. Apparently, that is not what the universe had in mind for me. Marvelous Portia appeared. I purchased her from Carol Dombrowsky in 2017 and our adventures together began.

Competing in a National Championship was never a goal on my bucket list or even a thought in my mind. At 66 years of age, I consider myself a “Green Bean” or new-ish member of the endurance community. However, at one of our AERC/Pacific Northwest Endurance Conference endurance rides DeWayne Brown, one of my wonderful mentors, suggested that I consider entering and competing in the National Championships.
I knew Marvelous Portia was well trained, fit, sound and could easily complete the 25-mile ride but I was very anxious about whether Portia and I could get to Gooding Idaho safely. I wanted to make sure she was healthy, hydrated and safe. Driving 1267 miles and 24 hours to get to and from Nationals would end up being the longest journey Portia and I have ever completed. Besides Portia’s well-being, I was concerned about making the solo drive safely in my 1999 Chevy 2500 Suburban and my 1994 Silverado three-horse trailer. Not wishing to have later regrets about missing out on an adventurous lost opportunity I decided to take a leap of faith on my green light riding year and go for it.

On the gray, drizzly morning of Thursday, September 29, 2022, Marvelous Portia and I hit the road and headed East from Portland, Oregon stopping every two hours at rest stops and gas stations to rest, drink and eat. How did this mare travel? Marvelously! We drove and drove and drove. As we climbed the last 6 miles up a hill to ride camp on a rocky gravel road the battery light on my truck flashed on. We kept driving and we made camp in the dark and got settled. I said to myself, “I’ll think about that (the truck) tomorrow”.

The next morning at dawn we were awakened by the extremely loud whinnying and neighing of horses in camp as riders prepared to compete in the 50- and 25-mile distances that day. The sun was coming up to clear blue skies and the high energy was intense and palpable. Portia and I were not riding until Sunday so we got to observe and take all the activity in. Ride Camp was well stocked with water, Porta-potties and fabulous volunteers. It’s difficult to imagine how much time and effort goes in to planning and coordinating a ride like this let alone a National Championship ride. Jessica Huber, ride manager did an incredible job. I can’t say enough great things about the people that contributed their time and effort to pull off this amazing event.

Any adventure is never complete unless it is unusual, exciting and has the potential to have some hazardous situations. Not only does distance riding have these components but so does the experience of actually signing up to compete, showing up at the event and completing the ride on time. Friday morning, I went to ride management and explained my truck battery problem. Within minutes, Chad Huber was at my truck diagnosing it with a failed alternator. This angel of a man ordered me a new alternator from Gooding, had it brought up by his family and installed it the next day. How does a person put a price on that sort of kindness? Magic happens at endurance rides.

Saturday at sunrise 10/1/2022 brought another bluebird day complete with a cacophony of calling equines, buzzing activity and horses and their riders gearing up for the 55-mile Open Ride, the 40-mile CTR and the 25-mile ride LD, as well as the 2nd Leg of the LD Challenge. Portia and I rode out for a pre-ride with Karen Pate and her Morgan, Statesman’s Eagle to scout out the terrain and let our horses stretch their legs. Neither Portia or Eagle were bothered by the black cows or the lava rock shapes rising out of the canyons that resembling all sorts of animals and Easter Island statues. In the evening the awards for the day were presented and those of us riding prepared for our Sunday 25 mile ride the next morning.

I am not what could be considered “a morning person” but I do try to get up at least two hours before my ride time on competition day. This allows me time to feed, water and prepare Portia and myself for our ride. I always have our saddle bags packed the night before because the stress of competing can cause memory failure in the early hours before a ride.

Once again, we were blessed with beautiful weather as we headed out on the 25-mile LD. I prefer to ride alone and we were able to find our “bubble” where we could ride comfortably at a nice all-day trot. My goal was to complete the ride in the time allotted. The first 15 miles we rode on dirt roads and trails that are frequented by cows, coyotes, people and all sorts of wild life. I had been warned that we might find rattle snakes or cougars but fortunately we saw neither. We climbed up and up through the rock canyons and marveled at the swaying golden grasses and high desert scenery. We saw an occasional cow and kept our eyes on the horses that were moving ahead of us down the road. The trails were beautifully marked and easy to follow. We stopped at an out-check where ride management had delivered the supplies we had packed for ourselves and horses and rested during the 40-minute hold time. Portia ate and drank along the way and at the break and was given the go-ahead to continue. I have found that the hold time goes by very quickly and in the blink of an eye its time to continue while acknowledging internally that the first half of the ride has been completed successfully.

We continued on in solitude with a wonderfully non-eventful enjoyable journey, meeting up occasionally with other riders. At one point we came upon a closed cattle gate. I am 5’2” and Marvelous Portia is too tall for me to mount from the ground. There were no rocks or stumps for me to climb up on to get into the saddle so, after shutting the gate behind me I climbed up on a barbed wire fence while Portia patiently waited and hopped aboard. We finished the Open Ride in seventh place (Top Ten) and came in second place in the AMHA 25 Mile National Championship.

For me it is always sad when a ride comes to an end. On one hand the thought of a hot shower and sleeping in clean sheets at home is very alluring. On the other hand, saying good-bye to old and new friends and the actual full ride experience can seem like loss. Distance riding has brought me to a community of people who enjoy a challenge, love horses, learning and the outdoors. This is a community that enjoys the personal empowerment and sense of accomplishment that comes from self-trust and the willingness to embrace the unknown.

We made it home to Portland in fine shape and are proud of our accomplishments. Portia has gotten some well-deserved time off and we are looking forward to the 2023 riding season. Will it bring us another green-light year? That is hard to say. But this year….. I have no regrets.

In 2016 Sharon Wilsie's Horse Speak: The Equine—Human Translation Guide broke new ground for anyone who works with horses, providing a practical system to “listening” and “talking” to horses in their language instead of expecting them to understand ours. Now Wilsie has provided the most complete guide to Horse Speak ever. Those familiar with Wilsie's work will find novel ideas that have developed since the first book was released, and those new to Horse Speak will be supported with fundamental lessons that will allow them to start having authentic “conversations” with their horses during their very next trip to the barn. With a focus on how horse training methods in general can be improved with certain small changes in movement and mindset, Wilsie has once again created a resource of immense value across the equestrian spectrum.

With illuminating sections on basic handling, groundwork, and ridden work, Wilsie gives readers everything they need to improve the training techniques they already use by enhancing both horse and human understanding of the process and the goals. The result is improved behavior, enhanced performance, and a happier, healthier equine partner in whatever you choose to pursue together.

A Memory From Barbara Thomson
My"Bucket List": The Grand Floral Parade
This was one of mine. Growing up we would drive up on the scenic Hwy 101 to visit my grandmother in Portland, Oregon. We came every year to watch the famous Portland Rose Parade, or the Grande Floral Parade. Then, outside of California's Pasadena's Tournament of Rose's parade it was considered the second largest. This dream started when I was only 8 years old. I had always told myself that some day I would ride in this parade...Then, the parade was four miles long; from the Veterans Memorial Coliseum across the Burnside Bridge and through downtown Portland and back to the Coliseum area again.

Well, when I finally moved to Oregon years later with my family, I was able to fill one of my dreams. The year was 1981.
This was my first Morgan. He was a gelding, and a very experienced show horse (boy was I glad). I bought him in Washington State. His name was Shawalla Top Buck. He was my partner in this adventure, though I had only owned him for about six months. We had to have special shoes put on him with Borium cleats to prevent slipping. Two were screwed into each of his shoes he wore. I had to put them on just before we started down to the coliseum. I still have them even today. Another requirement, we had to have real flowers, and I had them made up to be placed behind the cantle of the saddle. We had to be down near the coliseum by 6:00 am. I had to be ready to go by 7:00. We had to park the rig near an off street, get dressed, get him saddled up, put the cleats on, get the flowers on, and finally get mounted. They would come by check to (inspect) to make sure everything was ready as required.

Next, the horse trailer had to be moved to another location. My mom was my survivor. Nerves were beginning to set in. I remember standing just outside of the entrance to the coliseum. We were then finally ask to come in. I know I was so nervous, but I did not want to let Shawalla feel this underneath me (I know he did though). We just started walking in, and the worst thing was you are in a sun-light setting and it seems to go to dark in a split second as you begin to enter into the building. We had to walk through the coliseum over plastic placed down to the other side that opened up onto the pavement with a stadium of people clapping, cameras, and constant flashes of cameras throughout and we had not even started the parade's procession yet. We had to stop and people stood for the American and State flags as the singing was being blasted next to us.

We were the second horse out just behind the American and State flag horse riders, and the Mayor who was in front of them.

Several times I remember we had to stop and the kids would constantly run out to us and wanted to pet him each and every time. They would be touching his shoulder, along side of his flanks and even his back area to touch his long black tail. He was such a excellent horse, he never, ever once spooked, or even shuddered with any movement. He stood completely still, but I too, kept talking to him softly, and kept patting him, especially when these kids came running right at him...Not walking, but actually running up to him. He totally listened to everything I asked of him. We even had a couple times where the distance between myself and the flag barriers were further ahead and I was able to canter pirouette with him. Was not sure if we could do it since I did not know him yet, but he did really well (I had shown in upper levels of dressage in the past with other horses).
The crowds just opened up and began clapping...by the time we completed the entire 4 miles I was exhausted, but we both did it.

One memory of many I remember was standing in the middle of the road, the Burnside Bridge, and being at such a level to view the Willamette River from both sides while on my Morgan's back. It was sorta eerie!

I would have to say he definitely was an ambassador to the Morgan breed that day. Oh, I never liked the name of Buck so I called him Shawalla and he took to that too, without any hesitancy.

(R) Kehan Cox and Equinox Courage Under Fire GCH at the 2018 Grand National Horse Show
Western Dressage is an inclusive discipline, welcoming all breeds of horses – 55 different breeds were represented at the World Show – and all skill levels, including the walk-trot Intro Level up to the highest, Level 5. There were Greenhorns (World Show first-timers), military veterans, and exceptional riders (physically challenged or therapeutic riders) who competed for special awards.

The breed high-score awards gave WDAA a special opportunity to spotlight the diverse breeds who can all excel in this welcoming discipline. Whether it’s a gaited horse, stock horse, sport horse, or anything in between, any mount can enjoy the benefits of western dressage.

The World Show is the pinnacle event for a discipline that melds the precision of classical dressage with the western traditions that grew in the American West, and with the Spanish vaqueros before that. It is WDAA’s mission to honor the horse and to value the partnership between horse and rider.

The Western Dressage Association of America® is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization based in Colorado. WDAA is a recognized affiliate of the United States Equestrian Federation. Its primary focus is on education about and the promotion of Western Dressage, and an ever-growing number of riders have found a home within the discipline of Western Dressage.

In Memoriam
Hollywood Godfather
2004 - 2022
(BMM Enchanted Spirit x JPO Antoinette)
Always a champion! And a wonderful Morgan horse ambassador. Brando carried many to blue ribbons under saddle and in harness. He was loved by his owner Carole Bradford and many others. Thru trainer Eduardo Savala Sanchez, "Brando" helped give many the thrill of riding and driving a World Champion. He will be so missed.

Our hearts go out to Carole, all who know her, and who knew this wonderful Morgan horse.

"Somewhere in Times own space, there must be some sweet, pastured place where creeks sing on and tall trees grow, some Paradise where horses go-- For by the Love that guides my pen...I know great horses live again."
Grace Martin on Brando
Thank you to Dallas Bolen for sharing this, and for Shelley Bullard for publishing it in the NW Morgan News

--Hollywood Godfather CH (BMM Enchanted Spirit X JPO Antoinette) known by his adoring fans as "Brando", was owned and adored by Carole Bradford of High Flight Morgans since 2012. Born in 2004, Brando sired 7 foals and under the Bradford's ownership his show career blossomed. Brando was crowned three-time Reserve World Champion Amateur Masters Park Harness (2018, 2020, 2021) and was World Champion Amateur Master Park Harness in 2017. Brando had an adoring fan club cultivated through his trainer Eduardo Zavala Sanchez of Blackburn Training and Farrier Service, who allowed countless people to ride and drive the sweet and gentle Brando giving them the thrill of riding or driving a world champion. A big hole is being left by his early departure, but his time on earth was remarkable. RIP Brando, you will be missed by so many.

Shelley's note: As a testament to the courage and fortitude of Brando's partner, Carole, she competed in the Pleasure Driving Masters Championship with Brando's daughter "HMF Last Tango" in spite of her heartbreaking loss and her own recently dislocated shoulder. Carole, you are an inspiration. (And, thanks to Kurt Rumens who drove the mare in her qualifier so Carole could go in the championship. An example of the Morgan family supporting one another.)

ATMF Against The Wind
2002 - 2022
(ATMF Superstition x ATMF Gold Charm)

"Smooch" was bred and owned by Patricia Carlson and her husband Rick. Patricia considered him to represent the very best of her breeding program. He was known for his beautiful neck, square hip, deep body, laid back shoulder, straight strong legs, handsome face, and Morgan type. All this combined with his huge powerful suspended trot with a stunning length of stride. He was an honest 16 hands tall and was well appreciated by those in the Sport disciplines. He had a kind, gentlemanly disposition topped off with a wonderful golden color. His loss is heartbreaking for Patricia as well as others.

Our condolences to Patricia and all who loved her beloved stallion. She is still dealing with her loss. When she can, she will write a tribute to "Smooch".

GMH Uptown Gigilo
2004 - 2022
(Nocturnal Flash x Cloisonne)
Yesterday (11/4/2022), the hearts of my family, and my Ava specifically, were completely broken. To say our world got rocked barely touches the surface. Our sweet Henry passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

Henry was an anomaly, a deeply feeling animal that taught us to think outside the box, take a deep breath when frustrated and try to find a better way. He loved deeply, and taught my girl all the really important lessons we want our daughters to learn. He taught her to be patient. He taught her to love something more than herself. He taught her the value of hard ass work. That sometimes the right answer was right in front of you, and maybe looked a little different than you thought.

Yesterday, there was another urethra blockage of yet another bladder stone. This one was caught really early, and gave Ava the chance to choose Henry’s peace over her own suffering. Yesterday, like always, my daughter chose Henry. She chose him the day she first threw her leg over the saddle and settled onto his back. She chose him after every hard ride. She chose him after disappointment as well as complete and total pride! She chose him after victory passes and hard losses. Yesterday my daughter didn’t leave his side. Not for one single second. Because when your best friend needs you, you are there, period. She held him while they sedated him, reassuring him through her own sobs that he was a good boy, that she was going to be okay, and that she loved him for exactly who he was. She laid his head in her lap while he went running towards all the great horses and loved ones that have left before us.

Now I know Henry like the back of my hand, and I can see the bright eyes and perfect ears perked, tail flagged! I also know that the only heart that broke harder than my girl’s was his leaving her.

Ava, you did everything you could. You fought your ass off. And when it came to the moment when true love either shines through or fades, when it’s time to put your money where your mouth is, there you were. Brave and right where you were always meant to be, right by his side. You chose Henry over yourself. You chose his peace over your suffering. You did what all the best horseman before you have done...you showed up for the hard stuff. You made him your priority. When it mattered most, YOU WERE THERE.
As your bonus mom, my heart swells with pride while breaking in two. I would have moved mountains to prevent these tears, but my word, daughter...YOU are incredible, and loving, and tough as nails.

And loved immeasurabley by a horse named Henry, and aren’t we the lucky ones.
Christina, thank you for trusting us for the last leg of Henry’s journey. You single handedly changed our lives for the better when you loaded him onto our trailer. Our hearts are with you, and always will be. Henry made us family, and we love you.

Rest easy, sweet boy. We’ll be seeing you.

Denise Lester
