From Your Board Of Directors
|
Happy Fall..
My name is Kathy Christensen and I will be the president of MHAO for the 2025 year. For those that don’t know me, I have been involved with Morgans since I was a kid (thanks to the Justin Morgan movie that Disney made) and have continued into my adult life. There is something about the breed that just doesn’t let you go and that is ok! This love for the breed has given me opportunities to be involved in different clubs and different roles in those clubs. . I moved from Southern California in 2011 and I joined the Morgan Horse Association of Oregon in 2013 and have been active in the club. I have previously been the program chair, the membership chair, vice president and president. This upcoming year will be my second time as president.
| |
|
|
I look forward to the upcoming year and meeting the challenges MHAO and the equine industry as a whole are facing. My focus in the next three months will be to increase our membership and to provide more value to being a member. The club is as strong as its membership and we want to encourage you to renew your membership. You have an excellent board who is willing to work hard for you..they encourage you to give them ideas an suggestions as to how we can meet your needs. The club is YOU!! Without you, the club will not survive.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have suggestions or ideas on things you would like to see be done by MHAO. I and the board want to make this club about you and for you.

MHAO Board Meeting Minutes
A Report On The MHAO General
Membership Meeting & Award Banquet
| |
|
We had a wonderful Award Banquet and General Membership Meeting with a fiesta theme on November 10th, 2024 in the Dye House at the Willamette Heritage Center! A wonderful Hispanic buffet (people kept going back for more), good company, with fun games and lots of prizes! We all learned we are not as smart about the history or anatomy of the Morgan horse as we thought! It was a learning experience. There were door prizes, too. And the desserts offered in the Silent Auction were a wonderful take-away. The banquet is the best time for members to share their ideas with their new Board of Directors. It is the meeting where your ideas and comments help to shape the direction the Board takes in the year ahead.
We have received great reviews on the awards given out for our High Point program. Rather than plaques or ribbons, our High Point Chair, Erin Silver awards usable items. Erin gives winners the opportunity to choose what they receive. Even better, if someone earns more than one award they can pool the budget for those awards together into a more valuable prize.
So much fun! If you missed it, we hope you will come join us next year. This event is for everyone! The minutes for the meeting and the list of our High Point winners will be posted separately.
Click here to see detailed information about our High Point Program and the Point Submission form. For questions, contact Erin Silver, silvermesamorgans@msn.com.
Good Food Courtesy of MHAO! Fun and Games! Great Prizes & Awards! Good Company! Fun Music! And Wonderful Desserts To Take Home!

Highlights Covered During The Meeting
Our Financial Report:
Fiscal Year End 10/31/2024
Total Cash Assets at year-end are $69,341.09 down from $82,304.70 in 2023. The decrease in assets is mainly due to a loss from the 2024 Oregon Morgan Classic Show, lower income from our stallion service auction and an increase in our General Account Expenses.
We are cash tax filers and not accrual, so these numbers reflect the deposits made and the checks that have cleared by 10/31/2024.
On our profit and loss statement, we showed an overall net loss for the 2024 tax year of $13,163.59 versus a net profit for the 2023 tax year of $3,448.12. There are no outstanding Accounts Receivable invoices for 2024 to collect versus the 2023 balance of $806.00. The loss shown for the year reflected some expenses from 2023 that were paid in 2024, some expenses for the 2025 Oregon Morgan Classic, and the cost of the stallion service/futurity website for 3 years in order to take advantage of a special rate offer.
We had a good 2024 Oregon Morgan Classic Show with 114 horses in attendance and 71% of available stalls rented. This was down from 150 horses in attendance in 2023. The drop in numbers was partly due to the tighter economy, and partly because our show took place earlier than normal. Kids were still in school and the show was scheduled for the same weekend as the Charity Fair in California. Some of our normal attendees opted to go to the Charity show and some just stayed home. We have moved the show to the 3rd weekend in June going forward to avoid the scheduling conflict with Charity Fair in the future. This year we increased activities for exhibitors at the show and the club sponsored the Pizza my Heart party, the Winner Winner Chicken dinner and the Sweet Surprises dessert party. To help offset the drop in attendance at the show we expanded our Working Western Division to include OTAB and had a fantastic turnout. Between the Morgan and OTAB classes there were 86 rides total on Friday. These classes started at 7 am and ended around 8:30 pm. Even though we were down in overall attendance, everyone who came had a great time.
Our Stallion Service Auction brought in an initial net amount of $8,795.85 in 2024 versus $13,992.65 in 2023. After expenses these funds were combined with futurity reserves to provide prize funds for the 2024 MHAO Breeders Cup Futurity with a portion going to the General Fund to cover the club’s cost of providing Futurity classes at OMC. Bids received in the auction were lower than they were for 2023 probably due to people cutting back on breeding due to economic pressures.
Membership Dues for 2024 were $1,659.35 versus 2023 of 2,102.09. We plan to work on increasing our membership in 2025.
The MHAO board knew it was going to be tighter this year and worked very hard on keeping expenses down. This will continue into 2025 and there will be more focus on our fundraising efforts. We need to start putting some money aside to purchase a new trailer for our dressage equipment.
Respectfully Submitted
Karen Breckenridge
MHAO Treasurer

A November Issue Is coming soon!
Our Date Is Set For the
2025 Oregon Morgan Classic
June 18-21, 2025
Our date is set for next year's Oregon Morgan Classic Horse Show. We have negotiated with the Oregon Horse Center to consistently reserve the 3rd weekend in June from now going forward (next to the last weekend in the month). This should prevent us from being in conflict with other shows and give the Oregon Horse Center the time they need to be ready for us.
Plans are already underway for an exciting show with a streamlined schedule that still offers a full array of classes. We hope to see you there!

I have just learned that due to a change in the mailchimp return address many may find the NW Morgan News in their SPAM folder. I don't have a good way to reach out, because even this EXTRA will probably end up there too. So, please spread the word to folks that they need to go into their SPAM folder and advise that this is NOT SPAM. Help me reach as many people as possible to fix this problem.
Thanks for your help. Have a good November.

Remodeling & Repairs At
UVM Farm
| |
|
The iconic main barn has been under construction for the last several weeks which has presented a unique opportunity to see some of the original materials of this National Historic Site.
When it rains, water sheds off the roof and splashes back onto the barn. Over decades this water deteriorates the siding and in a few cases, unfortunately went through the sheathing led to the rot of the original beams.
A second contributing factor were the window boxes on the west face of the main barn. While beautiful and lovingly tended for many years, the moisture against the side of the building damaged its integrity. There were several periods of time during the barn's history that shrubs were planted right next to the building, also trapping moisture against the wood.
Thankfully the skilled team with KR Adams out of Milton, VT have been peeling back the boards and addressing the problems. In this process, we can see the original beams, sheathing, siding, and fasteners. There is also evidence of previous repairs in some areas with more modern materials likely completed 20-30 years ago.
The team found many square nails, hand forged, that would have been used in the original construction. These steel nails contribute to the rust spots in the paint, which also tells us that in those areas, the siding and fasteners are original.
The Morgan Horse Farm is protected by a historic preservation easement which came with a 2003 Save America’s Treasures Act grant award, which at the time was used to install the sprinkler system and differed maintenance. Because of the easement, any construction must be done with in-kind materials. The original decayed beams were likely made from hemlock or cedar, and will be replaced with a 12”x12” rough cut hemlock beam from a sawmill in Essex, VT.
In addition to repairing the rot and painting this fall, we are also looking to install more copper gutters to help mitigate the water issue.
It’s a fascinating process and speaks to craftmanship of the original barn, and the skill of the team working on site today.

Food For Thought From Angie Maple On Veterinary Services
Fair warning: I am in a mood from being up with a young colt having an issue….
A conversation was had in the barn a few weeks ago regarding vaccines etc. A comment was made to me that I “should buy my own vaccines and give them myself to save money”. Now, it’s valid. As a barn owner…financially responsible for quite a few horses (whether I own them or not…an issue for another day) my spring shots (and other spring work) is around the $3000 mark. It’s a huge hit right before show season and after winter where lessons have been a struggle so finances are super tight.
However, here’s what I am going to tell you. I pay the vet to do it. I pay them to clean sheaths. I pay them to do all the things I could do myself and save a little $$. Why? Because I need them to come when I have an emergency. Like when a colt is presenting as colicky on my day off when I am having dinner with my mom. One call and they are racing towards us in the dark. I need them to come if the horse has an adverse reaction to that shot I gave myself. I need them To come when I forgot we needed HC’s for an out of state show and we leave in 2 days. I need them to come when I just don’t know what’s going on with the aged mare. I need them to come when a beloved horse’s time has come. My vets have literally hugged me for a significant amount of time while I cried in the field. It hurts them too.
The practice needs to be financially sound to be able to provide these emergency services. They need to hire vets (who have a minimum of $200k in school debt and need to be paid accordingly). They need to pay a call service so someone can be reached at 1am. They need to pay an office person who manages the emergencies that come up in the middle of the day when all the vets are already booked.
I am so grateful for my vet staff. It takes so much to keep a show string of aged horses going. Not to mention a herd of animals hell bent on suicide every single day. I am grateful for vet advice given over the phone for free…when I know it cost them immensely to get that information to just give out. I am grateful for my vet who turned around when the fore mentioned colt appeared to just have gobbled his food too fast and seemed to work out of it. But gave me some things to do just to make sure all was good. And wanted to know how he was in the am.
So, in summary, pay the fucking vet. Buy one less saddle pad or fancy breeches and keep our vets going. And make sure to thank them.
Thank you a million times over Cold Hollow Veterinary Services and Balanced Rhythms.
The Vet industry is in crisis mode over the last several decades. Their numbers are dwindling. If we want their services, we need to support them in any way we can. It is not an easy job.

As a regular feature, I would love to start including information in this newsletter about breeding programs, stallions and mares out of history in the Northwest. Also about local stallions that are here now, or stallions who may be located elsewhere but are or were used a lot for breeding in our Western Region.

An Important Announcement!
Revised USDA Guidelines
| |
|
From the Desk of the AMHA President and the Executive Director
The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) is actively working with our fellow equine organizations and with the American Horse Council (AHC) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to align with the revised USDA guidelines to the Horse Protection Act (HPA), which will take effect on February 1, 2025.
These new HPA guidelines stipulate that competition management must notify APHIS of all equine events occurring in the United States. We recognize that this may pose challenges for event organizers. To assist in this process, USEF has agreed to provide APHIS with a monthly report of all USEF and USEF Lite licensed competitions.
As part of the HPA, APHIS has the authority to inspect horse shows to ensure compliance with the soring rule. We understand that such inspections are infrequent at Morgan Horse shows, and many may not be fully acquainted with the requirements. We encourage all participants to approach any inspection with professionalism and cooperation, as these measures are designed to safeguard our breed and maintain the integrity of our sport.
For a detailed summary of the revisions to the Act, please refer to the following link: Horse Protection Amendments.
Historically, USDA has conducted fewer than 50 inspections across the United States each year. However, it is essential for competition management to be aware that, should an inspection occur, federal law requires that inspectors be granted access to the grounds, including stabling areas, to fulfill their responsibilities.
In the coming months, we will collaborate with our industry partners to develop a checklist and additional information for show committees regarding the inspection process and what to expect should an inspection take place.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our equine community. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to upholding the standards of our sport.
Sincerely,
Steven Handy

|
OHC is the primary sponsor and host of Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue courses taught by world renowned expert, Dr. Rebecca Husted. These trainings are open to anyone, but are specifically geared towards fire department personnel, first responders, veterinarians, search & rescue members, animal rescue specialists, livestock breeders, horse trainers, and any large animal owner that wants to be more prepared.
This intense training will show you the proper ways to respond and prepare for large animal emergencies. The TLAER training courses introduces the latest concepts, techniques, procedures and equipment being used today – to learn to work together on a scene and build a great incident action plan, then extricate the animal safely for both the animal and responders. All who attend the whole course will receive a certificate of completion.
**The TLAER courses produced by OHC qualify for 16 Oregon Vet Board CE Credits. **
The instructor communicates and networks with people all around the world to develop innovative tactics, techniques and procedures to share with their students. TLAER, Inc’s ongoing research and development focus on simple and practical applications with student-suggested improvements. Courses are updated constantly, allowing students to learn the most current methods and equipment in each course. Instructors are horse and cattle people so they know about the behavior of animals and people and how that applies on-scene.

Remembering...Janet Ellen Morris
|
AMHA and the world mourns the passing of Janet Ellen Morris. Janet passed peacefully at her home in Massachusetts on August 10, 2024, at the age of 78 with her husband, Chris, and her dogs by her side. Janet and Chris met in 1965 and shared life, side by side, for the next 59 years.
Janet was an amazing person, an accomplished author, and lifelong equestrian. She served the United States as a Defense Analyst and was a member of the Council of Foreign Relations Independent Task Force on Nonlethal Weapons and Capabilities, writing many papers and articles on military and national security topics. In addition, co-authoring with her husband, Chris, and others, Janet published more than forty books spanning nearly 50 years.
Janet and Chris founded the world-champion Morgan horse program, Paradise Morgans, in 1996. In 1998, their Morgan horse success began with world championships for their foundation mare, UVM Christine. Other homebred champions followed such as Pastorale, Spring Diva, Concordia, Privilege CH, and more.
Janet left an indelible mark on the world and our Morgan community. Our deepest condolences to Chris, family, and friends.
Janet and Chris participated in our local shows for a number of years. They also often supported our stallion service auction. Our hearts go out to Chris for the loss of his longtime partner.
