STATEMENT FROM THE OREGON HORSE CENTER REGARDING EHV-1
Hello Everyone!
We have been answering phone calls, emails, messages, comments, everywhere and are trying to be as communicative and transparent as possible regarding the EHV-1 outbreak in Deschutes County. Here's some helpful information regarding the Oregon Horse Center (OHC) and the recent EHV-1 cases:
There have been no cases in Eugene, only in Deschutes County. Here is some information that may be helpful for you from the Oregon Horse Center.
OHC was not made aware until May 17 (Tuesday) about either of these cases. The State Vet has not felt it necessary to contact us as it is coming from Deschutes County, not our facility.
There were two cases.
1) The first horse attended the gaited show in April (at the Prairie facility), it was asymptomatic and likely not shedding the virus. The last possible day that horse could have been on the property was exactly 25 days ago, well past the 2-10 day incubation period for that virus. The person with the horse at the gaited horse show did not disclose this to their show organizer (that was not a show we managed) and is reported as such in the circulating vet post, "Unfortunately, due to delayed reporting, this case was only recently shared with the department." They did not feel the need to contact us either.
2) The second was at the WSSH show, in a temporary stall built in the main facility (not the Prairie facility) for that event. The last possible day that horse could have been on the property was 11 days ago as of this post. That horse was also not symptomatic at the time and we have been told not likely shedding the virus. Again, the incubation period for it in infected horses is 2-10 days, there have been no additional horses from that event we are aware of that have gotten sick.
Both of these horses came from Descutes County, that is where the virus is coming from, not the Oregon Horse Center.
No horses at OHC are showing any type of symptoms. No additional horses from shows in the last month are showing symptoms to our knowledge (we have obviously been in contact with all show management).
We totally understand everyone's concern, this is why we are so stringent about boarding horse vaccinations AND health certificates when moving in.
All events for this weekend and next at OHC have been voluntarily cancelled in an abundance of caution as we care far more about the horses than one show. Again, this is by choice, and the state vet has not felt it necessary to contact us regarding this as it is not coming from OHC.
We appreciate everyone's concern for the horses well being. Hopefully this is helpful information for horse owners in the PNW.
