Greetings MHAO members
Hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the year, but here we are. October so far has been a little wet but a tad bit of liquid sunshine never hurts! Yes, I know we are about to get much more “liquid sunshine” over the next few months, but that’s fall in the great PNW!
As we come to the close of the year, we will be voting for the new board for 2026. You will be receiving your ballot via email for the board election. The ballot must be received by November 8th or by 2:00 PM, November 9th if voting on line or at the Annual Year End Award Banquet and general membership meeting.
Speaking of the banquet, it will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9th at the Dye House in Salem from noon to 4:00. Our education chair, Patricia Carlson has been busy planning our festivities for the banquet. She has chosen the theme of “Its Fiesta Time” with a menu of delicious Mexican food and fun games with prizes. The banquet will also feature a bake sale fundraiser for support of MHAO programs. You are encouraged to bring a baked item, be it homemade or store bought, and place it in the sale. If you have been to the banquet when we have done this, it is a great opportunity to get some awesomely tasty baked goods. At the banquet, we will also hold our general meeting and present our high point awards! Patricia has asked that you RSVP to her either via text, or email. Please see the flyer later in the Stable Sheet for further information regarding the banquet.
Finally, I would like to extend a hearty good luck to all our MHAO members who are competing back at the Morgan Grand National in Oklahoma City. The Pacific Northwest Morgan community will be well represented by those from our area who went back. Please join me in wishing them best of luck and safe travels on their return!
I hope that I will see you all at the banquet and that you will join In the festivities! This event is to celebrate you!

| | Do You Have Something For Sale? | | |
Do you have something for sale? I'm sure you do! People are always looking for something or have something they would like to sell. From horses to tack to property, vehicles, trailers, training, lessons, stallions standing, trails to ride on, other services or products. Put your classified ad in the Stable Sheet. Members can sell anything here. Also post it on the MHAO Facebook page between the 1st and 5th of each month.
YOUR CLASSIFIED LISTING IS FREE!! I'll even include pictures. Larger ads can be put into the main part of the Stable Sheet newsletter for a modest fee. Do you put on events or clinics? Summer Camps? Let us help you get the word out.
I have created a separate section of this newsletter for classified ads. Join me as I endeavor to make it the "go to" place to share with those looking for horses or horse related items in this area. If you give lessons or sell something on an ongoing basis, why not put it here and on our website? Your listing is free! Do you stand a stallion? Offer training or give lessons?
Another idea, put your business card in the Stable Sheet! It only costs you $10 per year, and it helps us cover the cost of producing this newsletter. We need your support.
Once you no longer need the classified ad, be sure to let me know.

Spotlight On Two Of Our MHAO Programs
| |
MHAO Ride/Drive Program
This Program Is For All MHAO Members -
Get Enrolled!
| | |
If you ride or drive a Morgan horse, you should be enrolled in this program! Very few of our members are.
Close date to turn in your hours for this year's awards prior to this year's Award Banquet is October 15th
This program was established to recognize ALL our members who ride or drive their Morgan horse. You don't need to be competing in anything or showing your horse. Riding or driving at home or on the trail counts. That siad, those that show can turn in their hours as well. You will be rewarded for what you do. It is not a competition.
The only riding or driving time that doesn't count is time in front of a judge at a Morgan show. ALL your time at an Open show counts, even in front of a judge. So get enrolled and start tallying up all that time you are practicing, warming up, enjoying a trail ride, everything or just enjoying that connection time with your horse. Earn patches and prizes that will be handed out at the annual MHAO Award Banquet. We want to see you there!
After October 15th, start tallying you hours for the next year.
There is a one time enrollment fee that stays with you for the life of your membership in MHAO. Just don't let it lapse. Let's go! Those patches will help make people aware that you are riding or driving a Morgan horse. Many wonderful conversations have started just this way! This is a great way to help us all add people to our Morgan community. Remember, those who buy their first Morgan horse from an MHAO member will get their membership for the year of purchase for free. Have them fill out a membership form and say who they bought their horse from on the form. Your club needs to grow! You can help!

| | MHAO Open Incentive Program | | |
When I ask people to join MHAO, sometimes they say "What's In It For Me"! Well this program is one of my answers. Not only do you become a member of our wonderful Morgan community, get discounts on education and advertising, but with this program an individual can get back their membership fee. And this club does offer a lot of benefits. More than any other club in the Western Region! This Stable Sheet is another benefit.
The Open Incentive program is designed to give our members a monetary reward for getting their Morgan horse out in front of other people - other people being those who are not already involved with Morgan horses or who have a Morgan horse but are not members of MHAO. This program is all about growing our membership and thanking you for helping to promote our breed.
Members can get reimbursed for up to $10 per event and up to $30 per year for attending clinics, open shows, trail rides, parades, or any other events where you take your Morgan horse and pay a fee. See the above flyer for examples. Turn in your receipts and the reimbursement form within 30 days of the event.
No Enrollment fee

Click here to download a reimbursement form and flollow the instructions on the form.
For questions or more information, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.
NOTE: This program does not reimburse members for attending MHAO events where members already receive a discount. Reimbursement rates may change each year as determined by the MHAO Board of Directors.

The Discussion Continues
Why eventing---and other horse competitions---have gotten SO expensive.
From Tamarack Farm
| | |
In 1962 I became member number 63 of the three year old US Combined Training Association. That was how small it started, and we did every single part of it as volunteers. We built the courses, laid out the dressage arenas, coached each other---such as it was---and judged, organied, and officiated basically for free. We were building the sport from the bottom up.
Over time, slowly at first, and then with building momentum, all the things that were once done by volunteers began to be done by professionals for money, course design, jump building---ever fancier jumps---officiating, judging, professional barns, and today there are professional riders.
Money has replaced volunteerism, and at some of the big events there's enough of it around, but it leaves a weakened base of feeder events.
At some point if the sport can’t figure out how to keep costs down, in many parts of the world eventing , which is simply shrinking in New England compared to 30-40 years ago, will probably become an insignificant sport.
Lots of people now depend on their incomes from eventing, and guess who pays for all of that? You got it---The rank and file competitors. And the various associations that are meant to support are also full of paid employees, and so membership fees and hundreds of rules and regulations add to the burden.
These sports have become too top heavy for the rank and file members.
It is as though those who are current competitors have forgotten where these sports started. In fact, they have NOT forgotten. Most of them never even knew in the first place.

Across the October sky, two cosmic travelers — Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) and Comet SWAN (C/2025 R2) — illuminate the heavens in a breathtaking double show.
Comet Lemmon glows greenish-blue near the Big Dipper, while SWAN burns golden low on the horizon — each trailing silken tails of gas and dust that shimmer at sunset.
It’s a celestial duet not seen in years: two bright comets, both visible in a single month, dancing beside the Orionids meteor shower.
Find a dark place, look northwest after sunset around October 20–22, and let the night sky remind you how alive the universe truly is.

Ribbons of Service is open to all youth members who compete in equestrian competitions in many divisions, including Morgans! Participants in the UPHA Ribbons of Service program have raised thousands of dollars each year for St. Jude and other charities. The program teaches youth members the importance of community service by donating their time to those in need. Through this program, kids learn the value of helping those less fortunate.
Their service year runs November 1 through October 31 of the following year. So, the kids are about to wrap up their 2025 season. If you have Ribbons of Service participants in your community, please be sure to support them through this final month of their exceptional endeavor.
| Why the World Needs Horses to Heal Right Now | | |
We all need to do everything we can to show others the value of the horse to mankind, and especially to our kids. Here is an article that can help us talk to those not involved in the horse world.
In an anxious, divided world, the horse reminds us of beauty, connection, and the timeless medicine of unity.
By: StreamHorse Staff
The world feels heavy these days. Wars rage, economies wobble, technology hums endlessly in our pockets, and even our moments of “peace” are interrupted by alerts, notifications, and the next urgent distraction. Anxiety is global currency now. And yet—into this very moment rides the Horse.
At the most recent United Nations General Assembly, the President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa didn’t speak of weapons or power or GDP. He spoke of horses and the importance of July 11th being designated as World Horse Day. Think about that: in a room where leaders debate the survival of nations, he paused the noise to remind humanity of the very creature that carried civilizations forward, stitched trade routes across continents, and gave us the rhythm of progress for millennia. He spoke with reverence about the majesty of the horse—how it has shaped history, culture, and survival itself.
And he’s right.

| | Webinar On Managing Your Horse Business | | From USEF - Protecting Horses | | |
Horses are our valued partners in sport and in life. They are sentient beings with feelings and emotions. Ensuring our horses are treated with care and respect is paramount.
USEF Horse Welfare Guidelines start with a mutual understanding of the distinction between what is horse friendly, what might require attention, and what may be unacceptable or not okay. The stoplight signpost – green, yellow, and red - helps us define three zones. David O’Connor, Dr. Finn and Sammy explain the guidelines in this video series.
| | USEF ISSUES HEALTH ALERT TO THE HORSE COMMUNITY - SCREWWORMS | | |
The US Equestrian Federation Communications Department has issued an alert to the horse community, as follows:
On September 21, 2025, the United States Department of Agriculture announced the confirmation of a New World Screwworm (NWS) case in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, less than 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. This new case is located near a major highway from Monterrey, Mexico to Laredo, Texas, one of the most heavily trafficked commercial thoroughfares in the world. Screwworm was once eradicated from the United States and potential incursion threatens the equine industry.
Protecting the United States from NWS is critical as this pest can infest any warm-blooded animal – so wildlife, domestic animals, and humans are all at risk. Infestation with screwworm is life-threatening if left untreated.
USEF is working closely with state and federal authorities to develop plans to ensure safe continuation of competitions. However, a robust response to this threat requires everyone to do their part to ensure early detection and treatment of infested horses. Be aware of the threat of screwworm incursion and protect your horse by conducting daily examinations and immediately notifying your veterinarian of any maggots in wounds. Prompt reporting and treatment will ensure successful control of screwworm.

70 Fabulous Stallions are offered!
The MHF/WMF Stallion Service Auction is now LIVE! Bidding opened October 4, at the Grand National and online at 9 a.m. (Central).
We have an outstanding roster of 70 stallions. Check out these amazing stallions HERE!
Each year, the MHF/WMF Stallion Service Auction helps make a difference for the Morgan breed. This program enables us to use more money for promotion, give more money back to the stallion owners AND to the winning foals, and award more money to the handlers of those winners.
The auction (online only this year) bidding ends Friday, December 12, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. (Eastern).
The AUCTION BONUS is $10,000 in additional Futurity money that goes to the first horse (or horses) that is a direct result of the WMF SSA and wins a World Morgan Futurity championship class.
If the winner is sired by a stallion in the TOP 5 of the auction, a BONUS MULTIPLIER of 2x will increase the potential bonus to $20,000.
If the winner is sired by a World Champion Stallion from the auction year, another BONUS MULTIPLIER of 2x will increase the potential bonus to $40,000.
So, bid...breed...and WIN!

Monday Mindset From
Between The Reins
| | |
Love the process.
Winning is fun, but there is only one winner, and more times than not—we aren’t it.
If we were, we’d probably find a more challenging endeavor.
Otherwise, why would we do it?
People don’t cheer for things that come easy. Buckles and accolades don’t get handed out for taking the easy route.
Our self-satisfaction and purpose doesn’t fill us when we don’t expend substantial effort.
In the end, the “easy” route is accepting the struggle up front and learning to appreciate that struggle for how it serves us.
Cherish the wins that come your way and, when they stop, put a smile on and know you’re headed for the next level.
Because that’s the way life works—
We suffer. We level up. We win.
We repeat.
Wherever you are in that process, go out there and make the most of it this week.

Oregon State IHSA Equestrian
Show is November 8-9, 2025
Oregon State Fairgrounds, Salem OR
| | |
It’s that time of the year! Our Annual home IHSA show is fast approaching and we’re in search of horses for the regions riders.
Not an OSU fan? ….. Our feelings aren’t hurt! (Go beavs ) Donating your horse benefits all other schools in our region. Riders from several schools come to our show and compete on a shared group of horses!
VOLUNTEER YOUR HORSE
Volunteer your horse for OSU's annual double western horse show – an exclusive opportunity for horse owners to make a meaningful impact on collegiate equestrian competitions. By lending your horse to our dedicated team, you can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of young riders while showcasing the incredible qualities of your equine partner.
Lending your horse to our team is not just an act of generosity; it's an investment in the development of riders and the promotion of equestrian excellence. Here's why you should consider contributing to our annual show.
-
Empower Future Riders: Your horse's contribution can empower aspiring equestrians to gain valuable show experience, improve their skills, and grow as confident riders. Your horse becomes a mentor in their journey.
-
Showcase Your Horse: Your horse is more than a companion – it's a talented athlete. Lending your horse gives them the chance to shine in collegiate IHSA shows, garnering recognition for their abilities.
-
Forge Lasting Connections: Your generosity won't go unnoticed. You'll build connections with dedicated riders, coaches, and fellow horse enthusiasts who deeply appreciate your role in their success.
-
Support Equestrian Education: Your horse becomes an essential part of our program's educational foundation, contributing to a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience for riders.
How It Works:
-
Sign-Up: Our sign-up form is linked under resources on our webpage. We will have you fill out one form per horse. We will ask questions regarding your horses limitations and your personal instructions. We will also ask you to provide helpful information regarding your horse to be provided to the athlete(s) who draw/show them.
-
Stalling: Our school will provide stalls for the weekend. If you are comfortable, you are welcome to drop off horses with feed and care items for the weekend. Experienced OSU members will oversee feeding and care schedules for horses that are dropped off.
-
Showing: Horse owners are asked to warm up their own horses before the start of each show. Warm-up riders from OSU are available if needed. Several schools will attend our show. There will be draws for each class assigning riders from these schools to horses. Your horse will only show in classes you decide it is capable of.
-
Benefits: Lunch will be provided by OSU to all horse donors both Saturday and Sunday. A "Horse of the Day" will be picked by the judge for each show. You and your equine have an opportunity to win a prize! If your horse provides monetary value on a day to day basis to you (i.e. a lesson horse or other service providing horse), you may be eligible for tax benefits. See our page on this under the resources tab.
Eligibility:
We welcome horse owners who have a passion for supporting equestrian growth. Your horse should have a calm temperament and be comfortable in a busy show environment.
Get Involved:
If you're ready to share the magic of your horse with eager riders and help elevate our annual IHSA Show, we invite you to become a part of our Horse Volunteer Team. We also encourage you to look into volunteering your horse to other schools teams within our zone. Sign-up or contact us to get involved!
* Volunteered horses will only be used as instructed by owners. Our annual show lasts 2 days giving owners the option to donate horses within that time period.
** We appreciate owner assistance during our show however experienced OSU equestrians will be available to provide care. Owners are asked to warm-up their own horses however OSU riders will be available if needed.
*** Horse owners are encouraged to talk with riders who draw their horses for the classes. There will be handlers available to hold horses between classes as well.

October 3, 2025 by Ryann Reinhofer, Thoroughbred Real Estate Group
A member of the Oregon Horse Council
In case some of my friends aren’t aware, a few years ago, I, along with Danna Kimball Kemp and Lauren Pfeiffer, felt compelled to start a non-profit specifically aimed at protecting the Crystal Rilee Park Equestrian Trails. It has been an uphill challenge to maintain the horse and hiker-only use, as its ownership and operation are overseen by the Chehalem Park District. We have made great strides with the help of equestrian voices and support to keep this great resource! I’m asking again for help from the horse community—please take 2 minutes to fill out this survey to help ensure continued use for riding without interruption or danger from mountain bikers!
- Share what you value about local parks and riding trails
- Highlight the facilities and programs you actually use
- Influence where CPRD invests resources in the future

NEW AAEP Field Diagnostic Guidelines For
Equine Infectious Respiratory Disease
| | |
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has published on its website Field Diagnostic Guidelines for Equine Infectious Respiratory Disease to assist practitioners with development of differentials and diagnostic strategies for approaching equine respiratory disease of unknown etiology.
Equine respiratory disease etiologies range from viral and bacterial infections to environmental allergens or inflammatory factors. Diagnostic testing to determine etiology is strongly recommended to provide targeted treatment strategies, implement biosecurity protocols if necessary, and support overall herd health.
Read more at: https://aaep.org/…/aaep-issues-field-diagnostic…/
Authored collaboratively by the members of the AAEP Field Guidelines Subcommittee, the Field Diagnostic Guidelines for Equine Acute Respiratory Disease were reviewed and approved by the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee and board of directors. We thank them for their incredibly important work.

Hall Of Fame Honorees
From the Northwest
| | |
From Sara Breyman:
So proud of my mom and all the years of volunteering at not just the Morgan Grand National but so many other shows. Congratulations on this amazing honor. Love you mom.
Well deserved!
| | |
Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
| | |
Send me your pictures and comments about your time at the show! I welcome information from anyone in the Western Region.
Send to Gay Adams, sunstonemorgans@comcast.net.
The Northwest was well represented!
Congratulations and thank you to all who attended!

Eitan & Santa Fe Renegade
The equestrian community has lost an iconic horseman – Eitan Beth-Halachmy. Eitan passed away on July 22, 2025, in California at the age of 84. He was the inventor of Cowboy Dressage; founder of the educational and competition organization that bears its name, Cowboy Dressage® World; inspiration behind the series of clinics and gatherings known as Light Hands Horsemanship; and five-time winner of the Morgan Western Pleasure World Championship, all unanimously.
A uniquely gifted horseman and showman, and a truly kind, funny person, Eitan inspired many riders to dance with their horses. Stephen Kinney, Senior Editor of The Morgan Horse magazine, said of Eitan, “Few horsemen in any breed accomplished such an impact on a performance discipline as he did. His horsemanship was a role model for many, but the pizazz was all his own.”
Eitan’s life and love for horses began in Israel, growing up in agricultural education and studying veterinary medicine at the University of Vienna. It was in Vienna that he keenly observed the Spanish Riding School – and – American Western movies. He combined the best of the two, on a Morgan horse of course, and Cowboy Dressage® was born. He wowed the world at the 1996 World Equestrian Games with his partner Holiday Compadre, and again in 2010 with Santa Fe Renegade. At the 2010 games, they performed in the opening ceremonies and upon their exit, Eitan was nearly lost to cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he made a full recovery and went on to inspire riders for many more years. Thank you for sharing your talents, Eitan. You will truly be missed.
Eitan said of Cowboy Dressage®, “When Dressage suits your needs, but a Stetson suits your lifestyle."
Read more about Eitan in the October 2025 issue of The Morgan Horse, People We Remember.
