From the Board
President's Message
Hi everyone-

I am hoping that everyone has been able to get outside and share the sun with your horses! Great weather for trail rides, horse showing or just hanging out in the pasture with your 4 legged buddies. Before you know it, the cold wet weather will be here, the days will be shorter and it will be getting darker earlier. Ughhh.. but in the meantime, get out into the great outdoors and enjoy the beauty that we have here in the PNW.
This time of the year for MHAO signals some major club "events". First and foremost, your board is looking for nominations for new board members. Are you interested in being a part of the board to help plan events or create new programs for your fellow members? Is there someone you would like to nominate for the Board? There will be several vacancies for the 2022 year and they need to be filled. We need your help. Without the board, there will be no club, no programs, no horse show. If there are changes or programs you would like to see, become involved and help make it happen. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself or any of the other board members.

Secondly, September marks the time of the year when we start to plan and finalize our General Membership meeting and Awards banquet held at the Willamette Heritage Center, The Dye House on Sunday, Nov.14th. Tentatively, we have plans to have a potluck format like we have done in the past followed by a general meeting and closing out with the awards for high point. We will keep you informed to the details once we have them in place but please keep in mind that future plans could be affected by the state of the pandemic.

In closing, you may have heard, we did not have a "booth" at the Oregon State Fair this year as planned. Because of the increase cases of COVID, I personally made the decision not to have a meet and greet booth for MHAO. It was a tough choice as we were looking forward to talking with fair goers and letting them know all about our Morgan horses. I felt however, that we should err on the side of caution and not risk having anyone exposed to the virus while interacting with the public. Hopefully next year the virus will not be a factor in our participation in the Fair. Keep your fingers crossed.

I am hoping that this message finds you all well, healthy and safe. Brighter days are ahead for us all!

Kathy Christensen, MHAO President

Maybe Showing Is Or Is Not Your Thing. Do You Do Other Types of Riding Or Driving With Your Morgan Horse?
Actually, all your time in the saddle or driving anywhere except when you are in front of a judge at a Morgan show counts for this program. Even all your time riding or driving at an open show or any other kind of event whether in front of a judge or not. All practice time, trail riding, beach riding, arena riding, riding or driving for fun, lesson time, exercising of your horse while riding or driving, tooling around the neighborhood..... everything counts.
Once enrolled, you will not need to enroll again as long as you maintain your membership in MHAO. Turn in a log showing your hours riding or driving your horse. Patches will be awarded at the MHAO Award Banquet. Wear them proudly or put them on your saddle blanket so other people will know you are riding or driving a Morgan horse.

Click here to download more information, get enrolled, or to use our log form to turn in your time.

ABOUT THE EVENT
Who: 6 Amazing Trailblazing Horsewomen (see below) on The Trailblazing Horsewomen Livestream, speaking with award-winning writer L.A. Sokolowski and StreamHorseTV’s Director of Content Natalie Mayrath.

◆ Patti Colbert — Creator of Extreme Mustang Makeover, Equine Industry Vision Award, National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Sawyer Award recipient

A “creative marketer” who has tried to blend equine tradition with innovative engagement, the Extreme Mustang Makeover, created and presented by the Mustang Heritage Foundation where she served as Executive Director, does exactly that while showcasing the beauty, versatility and trainability of wild horses. Approved trainers get 100-120 days to go ‘from wild to mild’ before returning to compete for cash and prizes, and the horses are available for adoption or purchase via public bid.

◆ Patricia E. Kelly — Founder, Ebony Horsewomen, Inc.

Since 1984, EHI has provided culturally competent, EAGALA-style equine-assisted therapy and psychotherapy to veterans and urban families; a Junior Mounted Patrol Unit, Park Rangers and community ambassadors; and Saturday Saddle Club in partnership with the University of Connecticut. Pat is an inductee into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Museum and National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum Hall of Fame, and CNN Top 10 Hero who has appeared on the Queen Latifah and Dr. Oz shows.

◆ Anne Kursinski — Two-time Silver medalist/five-time Olympian, USOC Female Equestrian Athlete of the Year, two-time Pan Am Gold medalist, two-time AHSA Horsewoman of the Year, Show Jumping Hall of Fame inductee, 2018 Women in Sports Coach of the Year

Yes, she has won nearly every major equestrian competition there is to win, and has shaped her sport behind the scenes as an author, chef d’equipe, clinician, telecast analyst, and Olympic/WEG teams selector. Yet the simple description under her name on AnneKursinski.com is ‘Riding and Jumping Mentor.’ Mentorship, not medal winning, found her at the forefront of the #metoo movement as a clear voice for equestrian athlete advocacy.

◆ Debbie Roberts Loucks — CEO, Monty & Pat Roberts Inc. (MPRI); The Movement and Horsemanship Radio podcast

Home is where the horse is for the daughter of NYT best-selling author and world famous ‘horse whisperer’ Monty, and sculptress Pat Roberts; since 2002, her marketing and business acumen have grown her father’s brand into a global leadership organization while building a better horse world is clearly in her genes, too. She launched the first-of-its-kind Equus Online University and the international symposium on the transformative nature of horses known as The Movement; and now, the Monty Roberts Mustang & Transition Horse Program, identifying how horses have multiple careers over their lifetime, and reframing ‘rescue’ as ‘transition.’

◆ Lynn Palm — Trainer of four AQHA Superhorses, AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Women’s Sports Foundation Equestrian of the Year

The world fell in love with her bridleless exhibitions on the legendary Rugged Lark, including at the 1996 Olympics, and few can match her record as an all-around trainer, showman, exhibitor and entrepreneur.

◆ Linda Tellington-Jones, Ph.D.(H) — Founder of Tellington TTouch Training®, Massage Therapy Hall of Fame inductee, Peace Run Torch-Bearer, ARIA Lifetime Achievement Award

Her forward thinking approach, Change the Posture, Change the Behavior, has always been ahead of its time. She has written 23 books on TTouch, printed in 15 languages, and was recognized by The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run as a Torch-Bearer (a global relay since 1987 embodying a universal aspiration for peace) for her devotion to a heart-based method that nurtures a peaceful connection between animals and people, joining such prior recipients as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Billie Jean King.

What: On an interactive livestream event produced by StreamHorseTV, in conjunction with Horse Illustrated

Why: A salute to female influencers of the horse industry was already on the Horse Illustrated docket when StreamHorseTV Director of Content Natalie Mayrath presented the idea for a livestream “sneak peek” and Q&A with some of the feature’s trailblazing women. Mayrath is a former digital producer on women and money at Yahoo Finance and series producer on “The Vanguard,” an Emmy-nominated documentary series about influential women in the media world.

“Our mission is to build a community across equine sports, and getting this powerhouse group of women together in conversation embodies that spirit of breaking boundaries,” said Mayrath. “They represent so many different equine industry sectors, all joining in celebration of the woman, and ultimately the horse.”

The Bullards Hosted A Party
Thank you from Bob and Shelley to all our friends that came to the farm August 13th for a rollicking good time. The party with dinner and live music and lots of dancing was the highlight of our year. Thank you all for your friendship! Bob said it was a birthday party for Shelley. Shelley said it was just a party. A fun time was had by all. The Bullards are always great hosts.
Why a horse? Something being passed around on Facebook
THE DREAM THAT MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND:
My horse is my personal dream.
One day when I am very old and when I can not walk anymore, it will be in my heart as a trophy of my memories.
I met people who taught me something and have the same spirit and I met others that I'm glad I forgot.
I got wet,
I felt cold,
And I felt warm,
I was afraid,
I fell,
And I stood up,
I even hurt myself, I have been broken,
But also, I laughed out loud inside.
I spoke a thousand times with myself.
I sang and shouted with joy like a madman,
And yes ... sometimes I cried.
I have seen wonderful places and lived unforgettable experiences.
I often made unplanned jumps that even Oliver Skeete would be proud of; other times I made jumps full of terror.
I stopped a thousand times to see a landscape.
I spoke with perfect strangers, and I forgot people I see every day.
I went out with my demons inside and returned home with a feeling of absolute peace in my heart.
I always thought how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance even feeling fear.
Every time I go up to my horse I think about how wonderful he is.
I stopped talking about it to those who do not understand, and I learned to communicate with other riders.
I have met some amazing people I now call friends because of my horse.
I spent money that I did not have, giving up many things, but all these things are not worth even one special moment with my horse.
He is not a means of transport or a piece of iron with wheels, it is the lost part of my soul and my spirit.
And when someone says to me: "You have to sell the horse and you have to be more sensible", ... I do not answer. I just swing my head and smile,
A horse..... only the person who loves them understands it.
May God bless my friends and all their horses...
And the adventure continues.
And I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
Thank you Erin Silver, and others for sharing this.
I hope everyone had a
great holiday.
Don't be Left Out!

Help Request From A Member Of Our Morgan Community
Mara Lin Tomlin & Everett Robinson
Hi, my name is Mara. My partner, soon to be husband, is Everett. Everett has been taking care of me for the past 4 months while I try to fight a very painful intestinal infection that my body just could not beat.
While I was bedridden and Everett was taking care of me, he FINALLY got into see a specialist and have tests done that he had been asking the VA to do for over one year. Come to find out he has a large mass on his left kidney with 6 smaller masses broken off! CANCER

The next CAT scan appointment confirmed masses in his lungs as well.

Next came the house and property we live on going up for sale with no notice. The land owners and realtor demanded animals off the land immediately for property clean up.

We are now fighting with the VA to pay the specialist bills, loosing animals, and our home. We have amazing friends helping with the large animals for now!

The medical bills, housing, and animals are adding up. We are proud people, but we know when we can't do everything on our own. Now is that time. I need my future husband to get the treatment he deserves! The VA does not treat the men who served our country with respect! Cancer can be cured! Any small amount of help is very much appreciated.

Bless you,
Mara & Everett
