From Your Board Of Directors | |
|
Hi all,
September already! This year has gone by very fast, and Nationals is just around the corner. Fall is my favorite time of year, especially when the cool mornings start! Outside is where I want to be. It was the season I loved to be out on the trails with a Morgan partner, back when I could ride.
Ballots for our annual election will be out by October 10th. If interested in running for something, please let me know. We will aim for a Membership Directory in the Spring.
| |
|
|
Membership renewals are down. Anyone joining now is joining for 2025. If you are a Morgan enthusiast, I urge you to join us. Without members we cannot exist. If we do not exist, that means all our programs stop, too. Only with your support can we continue our work to promote the Morgan horse and to offer programs and services for our members and the local Morgan community. I know I am opinionated on this, but I think Morgan clubs are vital to the continuation of our breed and its visibility in the Western Region. Please join now! Be a part of what we do.
Do you want to be more involved? Let me know. Whether as a Board member or volunteer, you will always be appreciated. And everyone is welcome to attend MHAO Board meetings. Just give me a call and I will get you set up to attend. Most meetings are via conference call. As a member, your opinions and suggestions matter to us.
This year's Award Banquet is being planned as a celebration and very fun event. If you compete in anything, be sure to turn in your points by September 15th. If you ride or drive a Morgan horse, get enrolled in the Ride/Drive program and turn in your hours right away. Close date for the Ride/Drive program is October 15th.
Come to this year's Award Banquet. It gives you a chance to meet other members and mingle! Catch up and talk about all things Morgan. That is something we often don't have time to do at other events. Watch for more detail in this newsletter and the next one. Save the date now for November 10th and come join us in Salem OR at the Willamette Heritage Center.
Come one, come all! See you at the Award Banquet! And Good Luck & Safe Journey to All Who Are Headed to the Morgan Grand National Horse Show!
Praying for everyone's safety thru this fire season.

Here is our latest list of members as of August 11th. If you have not renewed yet, please do. If you know someone who owns a Morgan horse but is not a current member, please ask them to join. We are stronger together. Our local Morgan community needs MHAO to help with the preservation and promotion of this wonderful breed. MHAO offers a full array of programs for our members which can be seen on our website - www.morganhorseoregon.com. MHAO needs members and their voices to remain a viable and highly valued organization here to serve the Morgan community.
Individual Membership - $30 (gives you 1 vote)
Family Membership - $35 (gives you 2 votes)
Dues received in September cover your 2025 membership year
Another way you can help: if an MHAO member sells a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner, that new owner can have a free MHAO membership in the year of purchase. Just fill out a membership form with them and send it to Karen Breckenridge as outlined on the form. Where it asks for payment information write "First Time Morgan Owner", who you bought the horse from, and sign your name. It will be our job to earn their paid membership thereafter. Send me their email address so I can add them to our distribution list for the Stable Sheet. sunstonemorgans@comcast.net

Oregon State Fair
August 28 - September 4, 2024
The Morgan Breed Was There!
| |
|
Morgan horses were there to defend our 3x title of winning the Breed Challenge class and to represent the beauty and versatility of the Morgan Breed.
Well we were "de-throned" tonight by the Mule group, they stayed side by side in unison and we can't quite do that as we represent the versatility of the Morgan breed. But, that's OK, we need to share, right?!
Erin Silver
THANK YOU to Sally Lovett , Kyndle Cummins , and Alissia Baker for joining Erin Silver this year!! Morgans were well represented!
Thank you to all who were there to represent the Morgan breed, to cheer them on, and to the person who took these pictures for us. The Mule group is shown below.
| |
|
Win or lose in the Breed Challenge, Morgan horses did well in the other classes at the show. Pictured above is Kyndle Cummins with Raindrops On Roses.
"We had so much fun showing at the Oregon State Fair this weekend! Reba (Raindrops on Roses) and I have been showing Sport Horse/ Hunt Seat in addition to Western Pleasure and Western Dressage and have been loving it! Reba and Kona (Sangre Island Time) were amazing breed ambassadors this weekend at the state fair. They handled the crowds, kids, other animals and loud equipment like champs. Thank you Silver Mesa Morgans for another fun show!"
And plenty of interest was generated evidenced by people stopping by at the information table set up by where the Morgan horses were stabled. A cute kid with a huge bowl of ice cream just added to the appeal.
From Erin:
MHAO once again had a promotional table and 2 Morgans were available to represent the Morgan breed at the Oregon State Fair. Kyndle Cummins showed her mare Raindrops on Roses (Reba) and I showed Sangre Island Time (Kona) in the Morgan and Open classes over the weekend. A lot of fair-goers came by the stalls, and Kona was most happy to oblige the "meet and greets" Promotional material was available for anyone interested, as well as "goodie bags" prepared for the kids.

Our Date Is Set For the 2025 Oregon Morgan Classic
July 18-21, 2025
Our date is set for next year's Oregon Morgan Classic Horse Show. We have negotiated with the Oregon Horse Center to consistently have the 3rd weekend in June from now going forward (next to the last weekend in the month). This should prevent us from being in conflict with other shows and give the Oregon Horse Center the time they need to be ready for us.
Plans are already underway for an exciting show with a streamlined schedule that still offers a full array of classes. We hope to see you there!

Hi gay, I just found out through a PPE that my 17-year-old 14.2 hand Morgan mare, PBP Princess Love A Lee, Bella. has her eyesight being impacted. This was a total shock to me because I haven’t seen any symptoms of this issue. I have owned her for the past 10 years
She is still totally rideable both in the arena and out on the trails. She is a wonderful, loving, fun mare and unfortunately, I have two other horses besides her which means she is last right now on the totem pole.
I would love to find a home for her. Besides her eyesight, she is healthy, and an easy keeper, and there is no maintenance required at this time as far as special supplements or veterinary care.
I’ve put an ad out on dream horse for an "in barn No lease" option and possibly an adoption option with no money involved, but I really expect her to go to a family that knows the Morgan horse and that will love her so dearly as I do.
I was wondering if you can add this to the newsletter and you can just be brief and summarize what I’ve told you here. They can contact me at 360–608–0062. This is Margie Burgett. I have also added posts to MHAO and MHAO FB ads and the Morgan horse association of Washington.
Let me be clear that if it ends up, I can’t find the perfect home for her. Then she will forever be loved here and will just grow old. It is a shame though because she misses being brushed and ridden and enjoyed.
I could not say this any better than Margie did. If you could give a loving home to this Morgan mare, please reach out to Margie Burgett.

The second photo is Tim in a costume class at the same show. He is dressed as George Washington.

Thank you Nancy!

A Bit Of Northwest Morgan History
Sonoma
| |
|
This is a picture for history buffs. Sonoma was born in 1938 in California from the William Randolph Hearst lines. He arrived in Oregon as a 2 year old. He is foundation Working Western, by Piedmont Apache out of Rose B, a Querido daughter. My Dad and Sonoma worked on Cattle and Sheep ranches in the rugged coastal mountains of Oregon. My Dad would ride him all day everyday. Other cowboys would come in and exchange horses and go back to work. Sonoma kept going all day. He was the only horse my dad had. He was the start of Aranaway Farm. And I have kept his bloodline going ever since.
He was smart yet gentle. He had tremendous endurance and heart, just as a Morgan should. I have lots of Sonoma stories for the future.
From Mary Anne Morrison!
Thank you Mary Anne!
As a regular feature, I would love to start including information in this newsletter about stallions and mares out of history in the Northwest. Also about local stallions, or stallions who may have been located elsewhere but were used a lot for breeding in our Western Region. Do you have pictures and information or a story you can share?

FALL WEATHER AND LAMINITIS
With Fall quickly approaching, the increased risk of laminitis is once again upon us. We tend to see a rise in laminitis as temperatures cool due to increased fructan production of pasture grasses and a metabolic shift to increased insulin production. Horses most at risk are:
- Easy keepers and overweight horses
- Horses with metabolic issues such as Insulin Resistance and PPID
- Horses with a history of laminitis
- Older horses
- Horses fed complete feeds rich in carbohydrates
Your horse’s feeding program plays a significant role in laminitis prevention and recovery. The following blog article discusses five feeding tips to benefit horses at risk of laminitis.

AMHA 2024 Alex Mooney Scholarship Awarded
The American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust (AMHECT) is proud to announce that Camryn Nicholson of Eugene, Oregon, and Caprice Tondalo of North Haven, Connecticut, have both been awarded a 2024 Alex Mooney Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations!
Alex Mooney's love for the Morgan horse and all the people in the Morgan community was legendary and, in return, she received so much love. Alex passed away on April 2, 2019 at the age of 26. She fought her battle with Cystic Fibrosis head on and never with a complaint. This scholarship is given in memory of Alex.
The American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust (AMHECT) will award a minimum of $5,000 annually for undergraduate Academic Scholarships and/or Professional Development.
Camryn, we are so excited for you! Camryn is our MHAO Youth Director and is also the winner of the 2023 & 2024 MHAO Alex Mooney Memorial Scholarship.

An interesting fact:
The term horse sense describes practical wisdom or common sense, likened to the natural instincts of a horse. The earliest known use is from 1832, in the writing of James Kirke Paulding.

U.S. Jumping Takes Silver Medal at 2024 Paris Olympics

Press Release
The U.S. Olympic jumping team finished on the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games making this the jumping team’s third consecutive silver medal since 2016. The team of Karl Cook and Caracole de la Roque, Laura Kraut and Baloutinue, and McLain Ward and Ilex, finished on a total of four faults to clinch the silver medal.

Cook, initially selected as the traveling alternate for the U.S. Olympic jumping team, was called into the team with Caracole de La Roque prior to the team qualifier as Kent Farrington’s mount, Greya, began to show signs of a minor allergy-related concern. The team, in agreement with Farrington, felt it was not in her best interest to compete.
“That is one of the hardest things to do — to get a last-minute call, two hours before the event and say, ‘Oh, can you bring your white breeches? You’re on,’” explained Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland of Cook’s stellar clear-round performances in the team qualifier and team final. “Hats off to Karl. Of course, we’re very proud of our other combinations, too. It really came together for us and these guys delivered when it mattered most.”
In the individual final, Kraut finished inside the top 10 in eighth place, while Cook finished in 16th place overall.

Dressage
While the dressage competition in Paris did not play out as anticipated, we are proud of our athletes Adrienne Lyle, Marcus Orlob, and Steffen Peters on their achievements that led to their selection to the Olympic Games. We are excited about the upcoming talent and growing depth within the U.S. dressage program and are looking forward to the future. We’re beginning our preparations for LA28 and have high expectations of ourselves and our program at our first home Games in the U.S. in more than 30 years.

The team completed on a final total score of 133.70 after all three phases. “I really truly believe there were more positives than negatives and still signs we are here competing with the rest of the world,” said Chef d’Equipe Bobby Costello. “We didn’t compete in this three-person format to a level that was going to get us a medal this weekend, and that is really disappointing for everyone.
“We need get better at this Olympic format because it is unique,” he continued. “We have to think about the things we can improve upon that are going to make us more competitive against the world's best. I’m heartened when I look at the quality of the riders we have here and the quality of horses. Each of these riders has a deep bench of horses coming along, but we still have much work to do if we have the expectation of ourselves to be on the podium at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in four years.”

Fact of the Day…
The term put the cart before the horse is an old proverb dating back to 1589 cautioning people to do things in the proper order. John Heywood first wrote the phrase, and it was later popularized by Shakespeare.

Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.
With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.
Learn more about West Nile Virus and find downloadable resources on the Equine Disease Communication Center‘s website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/west-nile-virus
