| | From Your Board Of Directors | | |
The local show season is coming to a close. Your club is starting to close up its fiscal year. Be sure to get your competition points into Erin Silver by September 15th for our year end awards. And for those participating in the Ride/Drive program, turn in your time by October 15th to Sandi Humphfres. Lying ahead is the excitement of Nationals for some. For others there are delightful late summer and fall trail rides.
Don’t forget the MHAO Award Banquet on November 9th in Salem. It’s not just for those winning prizes. It’s our chance to celebrate the year, to talk to others in the Morgan community, learn more about the club programs, and to let the MHAO Board know what you are looking for from them in the year ahead. Bring a guest! It gives us an opportunity to introduce them to our club. Come enjoy our last chance to mingle before the holiday season sets in.
Meantime, I am working on the MHAO Membership Directory. We deliver the directory via email to members and make it available on the “Member Only” part of our website. You can save it to your computer or print it. It is a full 8.5” x 11” size now so it will be easy to print if you prefer it that way. I love to see the ads and who owns what horses. It indicates what horses are for sale so we can all help each other when we meet someone looking for a Morgan horse.
Maybe you can help the club. We are looking for more members, and more advertisors for the directory and in the Stable Sheet to help us cover our cost for member programs. For now our focus is on the Membership Directory. MHAO wants to encourage inner trade among our members, so please get your ads in. Let people know what services or products you offer. Rates are very low. I have business cards and ads on hand from OMC and the MHAO Breeders’ Cup Futurity, or you can submit something different. My goal is to have it all ready and distributed prior to our Award Banquet.
Here are the rates to advertise in the Membership Directory:
- Full Page - $20
- Half Page - $10
- Quarter Page - $5
- Business Card - $5
- Outside Back Cover - $30
We want to support you in any way we can. Help us do that, to keep our costs covered, and to keep our club strong. Do you know someone who owns a Morgan but is not a member of our club? Please invite them to join. Did you just sell a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner? Send in a membership form for them. Their membership in the year of purchase is free. We hope to earn their continued patronage. Individual memberships are $30. Family memberships are $35.
I’m here for those who have questions or want more information. There will be a few openings on the Board for 2026. If you are interested, please contact Kathy Christensen at mike-kak@Q.com. Let her know right away so we can get you on the ballot for this year’s election. You will find more information later in this newsletter.
Thank you for being a past or present member of MHAO. We appreciate you so much. And welcome if you joined recently. Not a member? We hope you will join. We accept members from any address.
See you in November at the Award Banquet!

MHAO Needs Your Leadership!
Do you have ideas on how we can improve what our club offers? Do you have a desire to serve the Morgan community and to do what you can to preserve and promote the Morgan breed?
Here is an idea of what time is required - always subject to change and adaption:
- 2 In-Person meetings a year at Membership Events (currently at the Spring Clinic and Award Banquet, both with General Membership meetings)
- 1 optional In-Person meeting in January at the President's discretion. Could be a conference call.
- 7 Conference call meetings with 2 being optional at the President's discretion..
- Additional activity on the committee or committees of your choice. Get involved with the things that matter to you.
- And of course, we would like to see you at the Oregon Morgan Classic as an ambassador whether as an exhbitor or volunteer.
Some Committee Positions That Are Open:
Are you familiar with the Microsoft Access software program using a PC computer? We need someone to manage our membership database this coming year. Call Gay Adams at (503) 936-4276 for more information.
The Open Incentive Program and the Ride/Drive Program need someone to track them. These two programs are for those who may or may not be involved in our Morgan show circuit. This does not require a lot of work. Call Sandi Humphfres at (541) 415-1230 for more information. Both these programs are highlighted below in this newsletter.
Do you like to keep up on the news? A new Stable Sheet Editor is needed using Constant Contact. Our goal is that newsletters go out monthly. Call Gay Adams at (503) 936-4276 for more information.
The Stallion Service Auction and Futurity committees are looking for more committee members, too. Call Gay Adams at (503) 936-4276 for more information.
If you are interested in being a Board member, contact Kathy Christensen. Let's talk! (805) 279-8179 or mike-kak@Q.com

| Do You Have Something For Sale? | | |
Do you have something for sale? I'm sure you do! People are always looking for something or have something they would like to sell. From horses to tack to property, vehicles, trailers, training, lessons, stallions standing, trails to ride on, other services or products; put your classified ad in the Stable Sheet. Members can sell anything here. Also post it on the MHAO Facebook pag between the 1st and 5th of each month.
YOUR CLASSIFIED LISTING IS FREE!! I'll even include a picture. Larger ads can be put into the Stable Sheet newsletter for a modest fee. Do you put on events or clinics? Summer Camps? Let us help you get the word out.
I have created a separate section of this newsletter for classified ads. If you give lessons or sell something on an ongoing basis, why not put it here and on our website? Do you stand a stallion? Offer training or give lessons?
Another idea, put your business card in the Stable Sheet.
Once you no longer need the classified ad, be sure to let me know.

The Morgan riders winning the 2025 Oregon State Fair Breed Challenge
(L to R). Sally Lovett on Heritage Hollow Blue Cued, Cindy Burchell on Anthem National Treasure owned by Shelley Bullard, Shelley Bullard on Harlan's Balanced Image, and Erin Silver on PL Dancing With Angels. Wonderful examples of our Morgan breed. Congratulations on a competition well done!
| | Ready for visitors (above). Our thanks to Mike & Erin Silver for all their hard work and to Kathy Christensen who supported this display. There was lots of foot traffic thru the display, and PL Dancing With Angels was the perfect Morgan ambassador. 300 to 400 promotion items were handed out. | | |
Members of MHAO represented the Morgan Horse at Oregon State Fair this past weekend. They took the opportunity to do breed promotion to the general public. The Morgan team also won the Battle of the Breeds for the 5th/6 times we have competed I believe! Thank you to Sally Lovett & Shelley Bullard for bringing horses, Kathleen Klopchin-Christensen for moral and ground support plus set up and tear down! And Mike Silver for tolerating my endeavors!

Spotlight On Two Other MHAO Programs
| |
MHAO Ride/Drive Program
This Program Is For All MHAO Members -
Get Enrolled!
| | |
If you ride or drive a Morgan horse, you should be enrolled in this program! Very few of our members are.
Close date to turn in your hours for this year's awards prior to this year's Award Banquet is October 15th
This program was established to recognize ALL our members who ride or drive their Morgan horse. You don't need to be competing in anything or showing your horse. Riding or driving at home or on the trail counts. That siad, those that show can turn in their hours as well. You will be rewarded for what you do. It is not a competition.
The only riding or driving time that doesn't count is time in front of a judge at a Morgan show. ALL your time at an Open show counts, even in front of a judge. So get enrolled and start tallying up all that time you are practicing, warming up, enjoying a trail ride, everything or just enjoying that connection time with your horse. Earn patches and prizes that will be handed out at the annual MHAO Award Banquet. We want to see you there!
After October 15th, start tallying you hours for the next year.
There is a one time enrollment fee that stays with you for the life of your membership in MHAO. Just don't let it lapse. Let's go! Those patches will help make people aware that you are riding or driving a Morgan horse. Many wonderful conversations have started just this way! This is a great way to help us all add people to our Morgan community. Remember, those who buy their first Morgan horse from an MHAO member will get their membership for the year of purchase for free. Have them fill out a membership form and say who they bought their horse from on the form. Your club needs to grow! You can help!

| | MHAO Open Incentive Program | | |
When I ask people to join MHAO, sometimes they say "What's In It For Me"! Well this program is one of my answers. Not only do you become a member of our wonderful Morgan community, get discounts on education and advertising, but with this program an individual can get back their membership fee. And this club does offer a lot of benefits. More than any other club in the Western Region! This Stable Sheet is another benefit. The Open Incentive program is designed to give our members a monetary reward for getting their Morgan horse out in front of other people - people being those who are not already involved with Morgan horses or who have a Morgan horse but are not members of MHAO. This program is all about growing our membership and thanking you for helping to promote our breed.
Members can get reimbursed for up to $10 per event and up to $30 per year for attending clinics, open shows, trail rides, parades, or any other events where you take your Morgan horse and pay a fee. See the above flyer for examples. Turn in your receipts and the reimbursement form within 30 days of the event.
No Enrollment fee
Click here to download the Open Incentive Flyer
Click here to download a reimbursement form and flollow the instructions on the form.
For questions or more information, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.
NOTE: This program does not reimburse members for attending MHAO events where members already receive a discount. Reimbursement rates may change each year as determined by the MHAO Board of Directors.

Missing horse from Joe Graham horse camp in Mt Hood wilderness (near Timothy Lake) Oregon. Caspian escaped from camp Wednesday 6/25. No tack or halter.
15.2 hand silver bay mustang (dark brown with blonde mane/tail) Please text or call Erin
If anyone sees him and has OnX hunt or offline maps please drop a pin .
UPDATE: DAY 16 Friday 7/11
STILL NO SIGN OF CASPIAN
I spent the week searching for him, trudging through meadows. I did not see any hoof prints or poop. While not the outcome i was hoping for, the meadows are abundant and he could be in any of them. Plenty of lush grass and water. The horse camp is very close to the boundary of Warm Springs reservation, so there are meadows he could have easily walked to, but I wasn’t able to explore them due to strict tribal laws about trespassing. A pilot did go up searching last Sunday and did not see him, but she wasn't able to get as low as she hoped in some areas, due to the wind.
I can tell you that every single horseback rider I spoke with this week, already knew about Caspian and was riding with treats and an extra halter. That was incredibly touching to see. Our horse community is amazing!!
6 weeks and still no sign nor sightings of Caspian (I guess his name should have been Casper the ghost) I had a tracker contact me and has graciously offered to go searching for signs of him soon. I will update as I hear more.
I did post flyers in camp grounds, on the PCT and surrounding trails.
I truly believe he is out there in some lush meadow somewhere getting fat. I just hope he gets lonely soon and seeks out other horses.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everyone’s willingness to help and your encouragement. His story is being shared and getting out there and I have all of you to thank for that!! I cannot even show you how humbled and grateful I am.
~Erin (425)-923-9462
UPDATE: 8/18/2026

Learn About The USEF
Combined Driving Athlete Pathway Programs
| | |
To provide guidelines and support for introductory education in the sport, the Emerging Driver Program invites instructors to host introductory training sessions where approved curriculum is used to teach the basics of driving for singles up to multiples from true beginners to the Preliminary competition level.
When taking the next step in the sport, the Developing Athlete Program accepts committed athlete/equine combinations from the Preliminary, Intermediate, and FEI 1* level who are seeking long term goals in Combined Driving. The mission of the USEF Developing Athlete Program is to provide guidance and educational resources to cultivate combinations who display the potential to improve the national standard of the sport and eventually contribute to a U.S. Team score at FEI Driving and Para Driving World Championships.
The Pre-Elite and Elite Athlete Program offers grant support to Athletes in Novice Advanced, Advanced, or FEI 2* and above who remain continuously competitive at the top level of Driving. Elite Athletes are defined by meeting results criteria that are competitive on the at the FEI level or having achieved a podium finish as either a team or individual at an FEI Driving or Para Driving World Championships. Competing at the USEF Advanced, FEI levels, or at a World Championship does not imply Elite Athlete program membership.

WILLS & DIRECTIVES: SAFEGUARDING THE FUTURE OF HORSES WE LOVE
An Important Question
| | |
A legitimate question for Morgan owners is; “What will happen to my horses if I pass away before them?” Advice on this subject is contained in an article featuring attorney, Morgan breeder, and former AMHA Director Kate Kirsch. In The Morgan Horse magazine she shared her approaches to safeguarding the future of horses she has loved and accompanied the Q & A with sample documents for preparing Wills and Directives to provide for your beloved animals’ future.
The article and her drafts of sample Wills and Directives can be accessed and downloaded from AMHA’s website.

Katherine Mae Van Dyke, 90, a resident of the Forest Grove community passed away on August 29, 2025 at her home.
Kathy was born on November 27, 1934 in Seattle, WA. She was the oldest of five children born to Franklin and Lillian (Ormbrek) Jensen. She was raised in Bothell, WA until she moved with her family to Milton as a young teenager. She attended Fife High School, graduating as Valedictorian with the Class of 1953. Following school Kathy began working for the telephone company as an operator.
She met her future husband, Eugene Van Dyke, while he was stationed at McCord AFB. Kathy was passing along a message for her sister, Carol, to one of Gene’s friends and he just so happened to be on phone duty that day. He asked her out and the following week they started dating, they married within two years on November 15, 1954 in Tacoma, WA. They made their home at the Air Force base until Gene’s discharge in 1956 when they moved to a farm on Thatcher Road in Forest Grove and then to the farm in Dilley where they lived for over 60 years. They had four children together, Debbie, Ken, Paul and Kirsten.
Kathy was a very thrifty homemaker (her skills with using coupons and shopping sales were legendary), and she also worked outside the home at times to help local farmers in the area. She was a field boss for strawberry picking, helped plant broccoli in the fall after the kids were back in school, and raised calves. She also worked for the Oregon Dept of Agriculture as a Brand Inspector and a Field Rep once her family was raised.
Kathy and her husband, Gene, shared a mutual love of horses, and were very active with Morgan Horse clubs and developing their Beaver State Morgans farm. Together, Kathy and Gene were instrumental in putting on regional Morgan Horse shows, and active in Morgan Horse clubs and promoting the Morgan Horse breed. They regularly showed their Morgan horses throughout the Pacific Northwest and bred and raised a national champion.
Kathy enjoyed cooking and kept her family well fed with locally grown food. She was active in her children’s activities including being a 4H leader. She enjoyed traveling to visit family and even ventured to Europe for a grand tour. Kathy also volunteered at her church, St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Forest Grove.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Carol Wilson (Horace+).
She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene, four children, Debbie Proebstel (Don+) of Forest Grove, Ken Van Dyke and his wife Leia both of Forest Grove, Paul Van Dyke of Denali, Alaska, Kirsten Taylor (Steve+) of Maple Valley, WA, three siblings, Lois Foster (Jim+), Linda Tillman (Warren), Frank Jensen (Sharla), three grandchildren, Michael Beyl, Kelsey Payne (Sam) and Grace Taylor and one great-Grandson, Arden
A recent article on Facebook about some of the Beaver State Morgans:
THE BEAVER STATE HORSES
At 17 years young, Hedlite’s Micky Waer moved north to Eugene and Katherine Van Dyke’s Beaver State Morgans in Forest Grove, Oregon. While at Beaver State Morgans he would sire 12 horses under their prefix. These horses became highly sought after by Morgan breeders in the Pacific Northwest. One of these horses, Beaver State Pennant (out of Tripenny) was owned by Cary and Leigh Ann Newman of Cream Ridge Morgans. Cray writes about Pennant, “I had been looking for a Hedlite’s Micky Waer daughter as a foundation broodmare to complement the bloodlines in Cream Ridge Mirzay and found Beaver State Pennant. Pennant had a high concentration of Waer, Hill, W.R. Hearst, and Sellman breeding up-close, with a cross to Brunk lines through Trinango and Congo. In 1987, we purchased her from Gene and Kathy Van Dyke, owners of Beaver State Morgans. She was already broke to harness and saddle by the Van Dykes. Pennant was the perfect horse; she became whatever level the rider was. She had plenty of zip for the skilled rider but became a great baby sitter when kids were on or near her. We sold her to a family so their daughter could use her for a 4-H horse, still very sound at about 20 years old.” The Beaver State Pennant daughter, Beaver State Tiffany (By Troutbrook Starfire), was the 1991 Pacific Northwest (PNW) Regional Championship Show, 1st place Snaffle Bit Reining, and the 1991 NMC&SHA National Finals Show, 1st place Snaffle Bit Reining.
While at Beaver State Morgan’s the mare Danni-Jo (Linns
Black Dan x Fridays Rebel) was bred to Hedlite’s Micky Waer and the mating produced the mare Teluras Black Gold. Black Gold became the dam of Ranchboss Black Star (by Black Velvet Dark Knight), who was a good broodmare for Old Growth Oak Morgans, and the Buckskin stallion Ranchboss Cortez (by Primavera Valdez) who was exported to Australia in 2005 by Wilga Park Morgans.
