The Oregon Horse Council works hard to maintain the rights of equestrians across Oregon, but with progressive movement to decrease our trail access, eliminate our land, stop the usage of animals for sport and pleasure and much more – we need to increase our voice! We are excited to launch a Legislative Affairs Committee who will assist our board with taking a stand against the legislation that can negatively impact our industry’s way of life. We invite you to apply to join our committee!

Can You Help?

  • Will be publicly promoted so that equestrians can reach out to them with questions or concerns
  • May work with other legislative groups (i.e. Oregon Farm Bureau, Cattlemen’s Association, other state horse councils, etc.)

Registry

Registry statistics remained strong through October 31, 2023, with 2,164 horses registered to date which is a 4.84% increase from this same time last year. Transfers processed to date were 3,312, slightly down from 2022. DNA kits and color coat tests are both up from October 31, 2022. As of October 31, 2023, there were 606 registration applications pending completion. Of these, 356 are for 2023 foals, 104 are for 2022 foals, 58 are for 2021 foals, and the remainder range in foaling dates from 2003 through 2020. The Registry Trust Market value as of October 27, 2023, was $302,729.65, down from August 23, 2023, which was $304,913.07.

The Registration Certificate is being updated to reflect coat color characteristics within the pedigree; the DNA/Blood type information is being removed from within the pedigree. In addition, the Registration Application form will soon have an improved, hopefully less confusing, chart for noting a horse’s markings.

The board approved an increase in the fee for Application for a Duplicate Certificate to $45 – an increase of $20. This is in keeping with the recent transfer fees increase.

 Also approved by the board is the following update to Registry Rule 6.D:

“For the purpose of transfer, the membership status of either the buyer or seller determines the fee. Member rates may be applied to the transfer of all Morgan horses sold at consignment auctions offering registered Morgan horses provided:

1. more than 50 registered Morgans are catalogued;

2. the sale manager is a current AMHA member; and,

3. a fee of $100 is paid by the sales management per auction.”

Breeders Awards

At the 2023 Grand National, 162 new Breeders Award winners were designated. Only a few of the winners picked up their medallions at the show. Letters are being sent to the remainder of the winners to confirm their address for mailing the award. Awards will NOT be mailed until an address confirmation is received. For assistance, contact our office manager, Brenda Newell, on extension 403. See this year's winners HERE.

Finance

Member statistics as of September 30, 2023, found AMHA with 6,004 members (11 less than last year); however, the number of Premium memberships continues to grow.

Next Board of Directors Meeting

The First Quarter 2024 AMHA Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the Griffin Gate Marriott in Lexington, Kentucky, in conjunction with the UPHA National Conference and AMHA Annual Meeting. Standing committees will meet on Wednesday morning. The AMHA Board always welcomes our members and guests to attend if interested; and in-person attendance at a minimum of one board meeting prior to running for a director’s position is required.

For more information about the meeting or any item in these highlights, please contact Executive Director, Carrie J. Mortensen at (859) 405-0746 or execdir@morganhorse.com.
