Stack Process Flake White The Old Dutch Method Pigment is Now Available

There are numerous methods for making lead white, but all historical methods differ little from the old Dutch method. The Dutch method, otherwise known as the “stack process,” essentially consists of exposing metallic lead in the form of strips for about three months in earthenware pots, which have a separate compartment in the bottom containing a weak solution of acetic acid (vinegar). The pots are stacked in tiers over a layer of horse manure in a shed. After the shed is closed, the combined action of the acetic acid vapors, heat and carbon dioxide from the fermenting manure, carbon dioxide in the air and water vapor slowly transforms the lead to basic lead carbonate. Flake White How's It Made We readily can see why the white corrosion was called flake white. Large flakes of white dropped from the rolls as they were removed from the pots. The picture clearly shows the appearance of flake white; friable, flat pieces of white lead. At first, it is somewhat disconcerting how discolored some of the flakes appear, but this and other impurities are washed away when we began to levigate the white flakes. LEARN MORE

Rublev Colours Stack Flake White Rublev Colours Stack Process White Lead is made in small amounts according to 16th century Dutch method, differing little to the historical “stack process.” It is basic carbonate of lead and usually contains about 70% of lead carbonate and 30% of lead hydroxide. This grade of white lead is composed of the actual flakes that fall off the corroded lead coils of the stack process and the white lead that is mechanically removed.
