Members of the First United Methodist Church and many partner organizations were recognized last Wednesday evening. The Emporia Board of Education thanked them for their generous contributions that made it possible for all students to receive school supplies once again this school year.

District News:
Climate Survey:
The 2018 Climate Survey is just around the corner. The parent portion of the survey will begin the week of October 8th during Parent Teacher Conferences. The community, staff, and students portions of the survey will begin the week of October 15th. This is a great opportunity for all USD 253 stakeholders to share their insights on Emporia Public Schools. Patron Insight, a third-party confidential firm, will be conducting the survey. All responses are anonymous.

Homeless Education:
The term "homeless children and youth" refers to young people who lack a regular and adequate nighttime residence.  For more information and what you should know click here . Heather Wagner is the district Student and Family Resource Specialist and Homeless Liaison. Call 341-2396 or email her at if you have questions or students you would like her to contact.

Clothing Drive:
The annual clothing drive sponsored by Student and Family Resources will begin on October 1. Please bring new or gently used clothing items to our drop-off locations including: Goods, Flinthills Mall, Dillons, KVOE and Emporia Gazette.

Board Recognitions:
The board recognized the First United Methodist Church for organizing the 2018 school supply donations and their major donors.  Grace United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, Walmart, United Methodist men - FUMC, United Methodist women - FUMC, Jones Trust, Lane and Lisa Hollern  - L&L Pets, E.L. & Z. Irene Hopkins Foundation, Capital Federal Foundation, Coldwell Banker, Kathy and Larry Putnam, Paula Sauder, and Steve and Bobbi Sauder. Their generous donation purchased school supplies for Emporia Public School students in all grades.

Board Approvals:
  • approved the sale of surplus district technology equipment via internet auctions
  • approved the donation of a pallet of school supplies from Walmart
  • approved the donation of a Hydroponic Garden Tower to Timmerman Elementary by Greg and Karen Bachman, to educate kids about healthy eating
  • approved to begin informational meetings with vendors to discuss updating the network connections and access points at EHS and EMS
  • approved policy updates and recommended changes from the policy review committee, with the exception of policy DJEB Board Policy Updates  Final Board Recommendations
  • approved to adopt the resolution to terminate an employee
Board  Updates and Information:
Redesign Update - Kevin Case, superintendent of schools, Jessica Griffin, principal at Logan Avenue and Tell Kirk, principal at William Allen White/TPA shared the redesign timeline and an update of the schools' plans to be presented to the board in November and December. Included in the update was an overview on how staff has been developing short-term and long-term redesign goals and how parents are being informed of redesign plans and the benefits for their students.

KPERS Optional Life Insurance:
KPERS Optional Life Insurance open enrollment is September 1-30.  As part of your KPERS benefits, you have the opportunity to purchase additional coverage beyond KPERS basic life insurance.  You can decide how much you need and pay your premiums through payroll deduction. 2018 Election and Voter Registration:
November 6th is the General Election and your vote can make a difference for Kansas Schools. Whether you plan to vote in person or by advance ballot, here are a few dates to keep in mind:
  • October 16th is the voter registration deadline, click here to confirm if you are registered
  • October 17th - November 5th, cast your advance ballot
  • October 30th is the last day to request an advance ballot
  • November 6th Election Day
Make sure your voice is heard this November!
