Important Reminders
* Enrollment continues for the 2017-18 school year. Online applications at usd253.org will be accepted through August 2. Parents can also enroll at the Student and Family Resources Office inside Mary Herbert, 1700 W. 7th. Call Student and Family Resources at 341-2396 with questions.

* Employee paychecks will reflect minor adjustments starting with the August 1 payroll due to new state tax tables going into effect that day . All step increases will be reflected starting with the September 1 payroll.

* The annual Back-to-School Convocation will be August 10 at Emporia High School. Breakfast will be served starting at 7:30 am., with the convocation starting at 9 a.m. Staffers at all levels are encouraged to attend to get ready for the upcoming school year, hear inspirational stories from the 2016-17 school year and also to get their ID pictures taken at the event, both for badges and for the online staff directory.

Schools Supplied

Last week, First United Methodist Church announced it was expanding its donation of school supplies to include Emporia High School. EHS parents need to supply highlighters, dry erase markers, composition notebooks and facial tissue. Parents of students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade need to buy backpacks and facial tissues. Parents may need to buy additional school supplies at the end of each trimester. School supplies will be delivered to each school Saturday. This is the second straight year First United Methodist has spearheaded a school supplies donation effort for USD 253.



* USD 253 employees and Emporia High students helped to hand out water to Emporia and Lyon County residents impacted by the July 20 water main break. Residents could go to the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building for water after a 20-inch line broke, shutting down water service countywide and into Coffey County.



* Teachers and staff have been busy getting ready for the upcoming school year, and so have students. As an example, the Emporia Middle School Student Council met earlier this week to brainstorm ideas and share information. New K-8 teachers, meanwhile, spent Monday and Tuesday in an orientation and induction session for the  Capturing Kids Hearts program. The building-wide process utilized at all USD 253 elementary schools and Emporia Middle School immerses teachers, staff and administrators in several skill sets they will use at all district levels, modeling ways to build meaningful, productive relationships with every student and colleague.



* The USD 253 summer meals program and MealSpot food trailer are ending service for the season today. Over 14,000 meals were served at EMS, Riverside, Village and William Allen White schools in June, and the MealSpot trailer began serving from the Emporia Public Library on July 3.  Free breakfast and lunch have been served to anyone 18 and younger on weekdays at EMS, Riverside, Village & WA White schools, with the food trailer serving meals from the Emporia Public Library. Plans are already being discussed for next year's program.  



* Led by music teacher Christine Simons, several Emporia High students participated in a Kansas Ambassadors of Music trip to Europe recently. Students participating included Hannah and Seth Duncan, Caleb and Paige Schmid, Xavier Turner, Ava Weakley and Abigail Wright.

The Board of Education approved the 2017-18 Master Agreement after certified staff voted in favor of the contract throughout late June and most of July. Nearly 85 percent of teachers approved the agreement, which includes salary and benefits, due process procedures and identification of several areas for further study.

 

In other business, the board:

  • Heard a budget schedule update from Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations Rob Scheib. Depending on Kansas Supreme Court action, the district budget may be approved in September instead of August, as has been the longstanding tradition.
  • Approved a memorandum of understanding with the Emporia Country Club for practice purposes for the Emporia High boys' and girls' golf teams.
  • Approved a memorandum of agreement with the Emporia Municipal Golf Course for practices and matches for the Emporia High boys' and girls' golf teams.
  • Approved separate treasurer's reports for June 2017 and end of fiscal year 2017.
  • Discussed upcoming dates of note, including the Kansas Association of School Boards' Advocacy Tour stop at Mary Herbert on August 11 at 9 a.m.

* Felix Lizarraga has started work as the district's translator as Elaine Rojas prepares to become a Spanish teacher at Emporia High School. * New student and staff handbooks were approved earlier this month by the Board of Education along with the athletics handbook. That information is now available online on the  usd253.org Staff and Resources page. Click on the Human Resources banner to find the documents.
