* Candidates for the
USD 253 Board of Education
-- Mike Crouch, Doug Epp, Iona Moore and Melissa Ogleby -- have filed their paperwork for the upcoming election. While there will be no primary, there will be a general election Nov. 7. Candidates have been invited to attend a special information meeting at Mary Herbert on June 21 to learn more about district operations.

Maynard Early Childhood Center
still has some preschool openings for 3- and 4-year-olds. Staff will be available at Maynard from 8-11:30 am Mondays through Thursdays from June 5-22. Applications are also available at Mary Herbert. Call Maynard at 341-2260 or email keva.scheib@usd253.net with questions.

* USD 253 fared well at the Kansas State Public Transport Association's annual Summer Workshop and Driver Safety Competition. Driver Christopher Whittington took first in the district contest for rookie conventional bus driver and finished seventh overall. Also, Assistant Director Jason Beyer was named KSPTA president, while trainer Tracy Posey was named Southeast District vice president.
* The Emporia High cheerleading teams competed in the Universal Cheerleaders Association summer camp and took home several honors. The varsity team was second in the Xtreme Routine and GameDay categories, while the junior varsity and freshman team was third in both categories and claimed the Most Improved award. Varsity team members Evelyn Ayala, Alyssa Cox, Devan Crow and Reagan Nelson, as well as JV team member Dacia Mast, were all named All-Americans.

ot, the 2017 summer meals program, continues through July

d a mobile food trailer will begin serving lunch meals soon. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to anyone 18 and younger on weekdays at EMS, Riverside, Village & WA White schools. The food trailer will serve meals from the Emporia Public Library and possibly one or more locations. Watch for the MealSpot mobile locations on Facebook.com/MealSpot. Locations also will be announced on KVOE shortly before 7 am each weekday.

Board Business
- Approved the soliciting of bids for a new 24-stall parking lot for Walnut School.
- Approved the payment of $12,630.90 to Schools for Fair Funding for base membership and litigation support.
- Approved a memorandum of understanding between USD 253, Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Lyon County Attorney and Fifth Judicial District for outlining when school-based student behaviors are referred to law enforcement or the juvenile justice system.
- Approved the purchase of several software packages for Teaching and Learning.
- Approved the disposal of nearly 90 surplus technology items.
- Heard a presentation from Logan Avenue on a Making HOPE Happen Trauma Informed Instruction program.
- Approved a donation of $2,140.79 from the Walnut School PTO to Walnut School for field trip expenses and a separate donation of $500 from the Walnut School PTO to Walnut School for the Royal Readers program.
- Approved the renewal of property and casualty insurance through CBIZ Insurance Services for a cost of $456,876, a nearly $10,000 rate reduction from last year.

* USD 253 recently filled two slots in the district administrative team with the hire of Kelly Bolin as Assistant Superintendent of Human Relations and the hire of Jacob Linnell as Emporia Middle School's Assistant Principal and Athletics Director. Bolin served as a principal in Dodge City, while Linnell was most recently an assistant principal in Tonganoxie.
* Emporia Public Schools' website,
www.usd253.org, will be down for routine summer maintenance during the morning hours on Friday, June 16. The process should be completed by midday.
