The board approved new courses and changes to the Emporia High School enrollment information for 2017-18. Updates will be made to the
online EHS Enrollment Planning Guide
for students to start the enrollment process beginning Nov. 28. New courses were added in the science and social studies departments to expand career pathway opportunities for students. Dr. George Abel told the board that five introductory pathway courses are being moved to the eighth grade to give students a head start on their career exploration.
The board also approved a recommendation to make a change in the weighted grade factor retroactive for current EHS students who have completed weighted courses.
FLSA Overtime Rules
The board approved a recommendation to adjust salaries for five exempt employees to meet the new salary cap under Fair Labor Standards Act. The change exempts these employees from earning overtime. These specific salaries will not be increased during regular annual salary adjustments until the current salary schedule catches up with those caps.
Financial Audit Report
The board accepted the financial audit report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016. The auditors gave the district a clean audit report with the highest opinion they can express.
- Superintendent Kevin Case updated the board on the next steps after the study session on Kindergarten Readiness in October. The Teaching & Learning Department is working with kindergarten and preschool teachers to create a list of expectations for incoming kindergarten students that will be shared with parents. Maynard Early Childhood Center also is planning four parent nights after the first of the year to help them prepare children for school. Maynard staff also are evaluating academic screeners for student assessment.
- Mr. Case also has completed his Listening Tour with staff, parents and other community members. He will present a report to the board on common themes at the December board meeting.
- Another Board Study Session will be scheduled Feb. 22 on the KansansCan topic of Postsecondary Success.
Other Board Business
KASB Nominations & Policy Positions - The board designated Art Guitierrez as the KASB Delegate Assembly representative and gave him authority to vote as he deems best for the district.
Surplus Technology - The board approved a request to dispose of surplus technology equipment.
Donation - The board accepted a $630 donation from Tallgrass Custom Wood Products to Logan Avenue.
