Important Reminders
* Classes begin next week for Emporia Public Schools. Jump Start will be August 17 for new students and transfers. All students will start classes August 18.

* Enrollment continues for the 2017-18 school year. Parents can enroll at the Student and Family Resources Office inside Mary Herbert, 1700 West 7th. Call 341-2396 with questions.

* Open houses are planned at Maynard Early Childhood Center, all USD 253 elementary schools and Emporia Middle School next week. The open house at Maynard will be August 15 from 3 to 5 pm. All elementary schools will also have open houses August 15 from 4 to 6 pm. The open house for Emporia Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade students is August 14 from 6 to 8 pm. The open house for sixth-grade students at Emporia Middle School was held August 10.

* September 1 is the deadline for several items of note. Certificates of ESL endorsements for October bonuses are due as well as verification of hours, degrees, endorsements or transcripts that may lead to additional pay or changes in the salary schedule. The Countdown is On

With the start of school now less than a week away, new teachers were immersed in training activities to begin the month. From August 1-7, educators were introduced to The Emporia Way of Capturing Kids' Hearts, Literacy First and establishing relationships with colleagues. Over 50 new teachers are joining the district this fall.

* Emporia High School was well represented at the annual Shrine Bowl held July 29 in El Dorado. Bryce Crouch had a tackle and an interception for the East Team, which had Spartans head coach Corby Milleson on its coaching staff. Also, Reagan Nelson, Cassidy Farmer, Alexa Houston, Jaimee Foster, Lauren Lopez, Izzy Alvarado, Megan Gordon, Hannah Cooper and Jacinda Weatherholt represented EHS on the cheer squad that was coached by Tara Trear and Tasha Messer. Adrian Sanchez, Brynn Riley, Cole Grayson, Conner Grayson, Diego Garcia, Ian Myers, Isaac Lawrence, Kyler Cain and Zachary Younie were part of the Shrine Bowl band.

The Board of Education approved a request for bids for new acoustical shells for the Emporia High auditorium.


In other business, the board:

  • Approved fiscal payments.
  • Recognized First United Methodist Church and local sponsors for donating school supplies to USD 253 students.
  • Recognized Emporia High counselor Bill Nienstedt for being inducted into the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame earlier this summer.

In Addition

* The Kansas Association of School Boards made an advocacy tour stop at Mary Herbert Education Center today. KASB Associate Director Mark Tallman and USD 253 representatives discussed Kansans CAN, the new funding formula and additional base state aid, school redesign and accountability for post-secondary success. Local lawmakers and community leaders also joined in on the dialogue.

* Building captains are needed for the United Way of the Flint Hills' annual fundraising drive. The appointment process is underway. Please email by August 16 with building captain names.

* KVOE has announced its annual Drive for Food will be the morning of October 5. All nonperishable food items collected will go to the Salvation Army food pantry.
