Kelly Olson, special education teacher at Riverside and  Laura Schwinn, audio/visual communications teacher at Emporia High School were recognized by the Board for their nominations to represent Emporia Public Schools in the  Kansas Teacher of the Year Program. The Board also recognized  Matt Irby, science teacher at Emporia High School as the Emporia representative for the 2018  Kansas Master Teacher Award Program.

Dr. Britton Hart, principal at Emporia High School was recognized by the Board for being named the Kansas Music Education Association's North Central Honor Administrator. 
The award recognizes administrators who have demonstrated continuing leadership in developing, improving, and supporting music education within a wider commitment to arts education.

The Board recognized Village Elementary for being selected as a Capturing Kids' Hearts Showcase School Nominee. CKH Showcase School nominees are among the top campuses in the country selected for implementation of the CKH model and high culture climate survey scores.

Concurrent Enrollment Partnership
The board approved the Memorandum of Agreement for Concurrent Enrollment Partnership between Emporia Public Schools and Emporia State University. Emporia High School students may enroll and participate in specified Emporia State University courses. These courses, known as Concurrent Enrollment Partnership (CEP) courses, will be made available at the high school facility, during the high school day, and taught by a university approved high school teacher.
Current courses approved at Emporia High School: College Algebra; Composition I; Composition II; Public Speaking.

District Wide Facilities Needs Assessment 
Board members approved starting the process to hire an architectural firm and Construction Management At-Risk company to perform a district facilities needs assessment looking at short-, mid-, and long-term implications. The firms will perform their own needs assessment along with gathering input from various stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, students, staff, board members and community stakeholders.

Sale of Surplus Property
The Board discussed an offer for the purchase of the parking lot at 510 Constitution and agreed to have  Assistant Superintendent Scheib negotiate the sale on the board's behalf.

Board Policy Update
The board adopted a new Board Policy for a revised district organizational chart effective July 1, 2018. Changes include a reorganization of the Teaching and Learning department while maintaining the current FTE of 5 employees.
