Staffing & Voluntary Recall

Dear Fellow Flight Attendants,

These past few weeks management has been struggling to cover the operation in Honolulu. Voluntary recall has been moved up from during the day of operation to before the day of operation to before RSA to before Trip Request. Although this is legal contractually, the frequency and the uncertainty of the timing of voluntary recall has had a negative impact on many of us.

In November, I, along with AFA MEC President Joni Kashiwai and AFA Senior Staff Negotiator Paula Mastrangelo met with management to identify possible solutions to remedy the staffing problem should it come up again. The PBS award for December showed signs that it was going to be a challenging month, but we did not meet with management again until this past Friday.

We will continue to meet with management to get this issue resolved. In the past we have done this by giving you more flexibility and incentivizing flying. We have told management that we are willing to do our part to help ensure that our passengers get to where they need to be this holiday season, and any solution needs to work for all of us.

In Solidarity,

Martin Gusman
