Collin County Democratic Party Statement Regarding the ICE Raids and Deportations.

True to our nation’s founding beliefs and doctrines, we believe that all people are created equal with the same unalienable rights. All people, regardless of their legal status, deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity that we all expect as human beings.

As Democrats, we are therefore deeply concerned about the potential impact of the Trump administration's 2025 ICE raids on all of our communities. These, along with those sanctioned by the state of Texas, have already led to widespread fear and disruption among families.

The financial burden of these operations raises serious questions about the allocation of taxpayer resources, diverting funds from essential services like education and healthcare. We believe in a more humane approach to immigration that prioritizes compassion and justice, rather than fear-mongering tactics.

We call on federal, state, and local authorities to commit to a humane, compassionate, and humanitarian immigration process that minimizes disruptions, maintains the unity of affected families, and utilizes public resources responsibility.

This Month in Voting Rights History-
On January 22, 1964, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organized a significant voting rights campaign known as Freedom Day in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The event began with around 50 courageous students and clergy members picketing the courthouse, while around 100 African Americans lined up to register to vote. Despite the presence of law enforcement, who issued threats and made arrests for "disturbing the peace", including that of a SNCC leader for assisting an elderly African American woman into the courthouse, no protestors were arrested. As a result, attendance surged to over 200, who expressed their solidarity by singing freedom songs.
Throughout the event, both the Justice Department and the FBI observed without taking action. Meanwhile, white applicants were processed without difficulty, while only four voter applications were accepted at any given time for African American applicants, and those applications were subjected to a literacy test and intentionally prolonged processing times. By noon, a mere 12 applications had been approved.
Although some individuals who participated in the protest were later fired without federal intervention, Freedom Day is regarded as a success. There were no mass arrests, no violent dispersal of protestors; instead, the local circuit clerk and voter registrar — the first in the South to be held accountable under the Federal Civil Rights Acts — was compelled to register African American applicants. This landmark moment ignited a flame of hope that would flicker resiliently in the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America.
