Standing in Solidarity and Support
Dear International Slugs,

The staff of Global Engagement joins our colleagues across campus in expressing our deep concern at the anti-Asian bias and acts of hate which have taken place from coast to coast in the U.S. and around the world. We share our condolences to all those affected by the recent acts of violence in Atlanta, San Francisco, New York, and elsewhere. We recognize that these events have been deeply disturbing to the UC Santa Cruz community, including our students, scholars, parents, staff, faculty, and community, and we join Chancellor Cynthia Larive in condemning the violence and hate directed at members of our community. We in Global Engagement pledge ourselves to work to dismantle our legacy of systemic racism in the U.S. and to create a more equitable, inclusive, and global university.

As Chancellor Larive wrote, incidents of bias and hate can be reported using the Hate/Bias Report Form. International Student and Scholar Services, Global Programming, college staff, the UCSC Resource Centers, and Counseling and Psychological Services staff are here to support you. We encourage all members of our community to learn about bystander intervention.

We thank you for your continued engagement with our office and will continue to support all of our international slugs. Check out our upcoming programs through which we continue the conversation and build support within our community.

Yours, in solidarity,
Lisa, Andy, Victoria

Lights up on Washington Heights, a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
