JULY 26, 2026

“Last month, the Supreme Court of the United States held that TPS terminations were unreviewable in Mullin v. Doe. This ruling has created increased uncertainty for Haitian community members with Temporary Protected Status (TPS). While TPS protections and work authorization currently remain valid through July 27, many individuals and families are concerned about their future ability to live and work safely in the United States. USCIS may provide further extensions to comply with court orders, depending on litigation impacts and timing.

"For years, TPS allowed me to work, support my family, and contribute to my community. Now I worry every day about what comes next." — Haitian TPS client (name withheld for privacy)

In response, our immigration legal services team is conducting legal screenings, providing individual consultations, helping affected clients explore alternative forms of immigration relief and providing helpful community explainers produced by national immigrant rights organizations. We remain committed to ensuring that immigrant families have access to accurate information, trusted legal support, and hope during this challenging time.

JFS participated in a roundtable discussion with Norwalk Mayor Barbara Smyth and Chief of Staff Lamond Daniels. Also present were the superintendent of public schools, police chief, commissioner of department of human services and JFS partner agencies Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants and Building One Community. Together with local religious leaders and community advocates, participants discussed support services, legal resources, and next steps.

We are grateful to the City of Norwalk for convening such an important group to ensure the safety of the Haitian community.

Food security means having reliable access to enough nutritious food to support a healthy, active life. Yet many individuals and families in our community continue to face challenges due to rising food costs, financial hardship, and unexpected life circumstances.

Through programs like the Friendly Fridge and Supermarketing for Seniors, JFS helps ensure that people of all ages and stages of life have access to fresh, healthy food. Whether supporting older adults, working families, or individuals facing difficult transitions, these programs help strengthen health, independence, and well-being. You can make a difference by donating, volunteering, or sharing available resources. Click here to visit our Volunteer Page and learn how you can support JFS programs that help strengthen food security in our community.
