Stanford Cancer Center Updates

January/ February 2023

Message from DSL Leadership

Dear Cancer DSL Team,

Happy 2023! We hope you've entered the year embracing this new opportunity to achieve what you find meaningful. If your focus is not on goal setting, we hope you feel a sense of accomplishment for all we endured in 2022. Can you believe it's March?

The 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital survey is now open for voting at doximity.com. We urge you to take a moment and participate. As you know, responses from this survey inform the publication’s Best Hospitals list, as well as the rankings of our specialties. Please note that the School of Medicine’s withdrawal from U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Medical Schools” is separate and that we continue to participate in the “Best Hospitals” rankings. The survey and voting only take place via Doximity. Here you can find the documents on how to register and vote. We hope you will find time to make your voice heard.

We have so much to cover from the last two months, let's get to it! As always, we appreciate all you do!

Best,

Maria Gonzalez, MPH

Dr. Arash Momeni receives the prestigious Godina Award from the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM)

The award allows one "deserving individual" to visit microsurgical centers in the US and abroad over the next year.

“As a microsurgeon, receiving the Godina Award is perhaps the greatest honor I can think of. I am truly humbled by being selected the 2023 Godina Fellow," said Momeni.

Momeni plans to focus on post-oncologic reconstruction and will visit centers such as MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering. "I will use this award to share work we do at Stanford, learn what our peers do elsewhere, and form collaborations to further strengthen our research footprint," said Momeni.

The award is named after Dr. Marko Godina, a pioneer in microsurgery for complex lower extremity defects. Although his life was cut short—at only age 43—Godina's work significantly improved limb salvage.

Momeni's fellowship will culminate with the Godina Lecture, which he will present at the ASRM Annual Meeting in January 2024.

Take our Survey on Cancer Awareness

Dr. Elwyn Cabebe and LEAD Filipino have partnered with a grant from the Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) to conduct a year-long action study to explore the knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes of Filipino-Americans ages 18+ and live in Santa Clara County in relation to cancer screenings and prevention practices.

The outcomes of the study will be used to assess, prioritize and design interventions that address local community needs.

We invite all Filipinas/xs/os that are 18+ and reside in Santa Clara County to participate.

Donna Healy recognized for 41 years of Service with

Stanford Nursing

We are honored to share a heartwarming tribute to Donna Healy, one of our finest nurses. During our recent in-person Ambulatory Shared Leadership Council (ASLC) Executive Leadership Council Meeting, we celebrated Donna's remarkable forty-one years of service at Stanford Nursing. The moment was made even more special by the surprise appearance of her daughter, Shawna Healy, also a Stanford Nurse.

Donna's colleagues shared stories and fond memories, capturing the essence of her exceptional career and passion for nursing. Her dedication and hard work truly reflect the values we hold dear at Stanford Health Care. Donna's legacy will continue to inspire and influence our nursing community for many years to come.

As Donna Healy prepares to embark on a new chapter in her life with her upcoming retirement, we want to express our gratitude for her exceptional contributions to Stanford Health Care. Her unwavering commitment to patient care and nursing excellence, as well as her dedication to fostering meaningful connections with her colleagues, have left an indelible mark on our organization.

We wish Donna all the best in this next chapter of her life, and we are grateful for the legacy she leaves behind. Thank you, Donna, for your remarkable service and the impact you have made on our organization and the nursing profession.

Move Readiness

The move to the new administrative space at 900 Welch is finally here and will start at the end of March! In preparation, we ask that those of you who will be moving to the new building (faculty, leaders, admins, and leads) to please pack up all your personal items from your current offices/space. Materials for disposing of unwanted items and extra trash bins have been placed in the administrative office suite on the 2nd floor of 875 Blake Wilbur for faculty and staff. Any items that include PHI should be placed in shred bins per SHC policy. If you need boxes to pack and remove your personal items, please reach out to Lynn Daugherty, [email protected] via email to request a box drop-off.
