Abandoned Gas Station Cleanup Grant |
On December 16, 2019 the Stark County Land Reutilization Corporation, also known as the Stark County Land Bank, was awarded a $250,000 grant from the Ohio Development Services Agency (ODSA) to clean up an abandoned gas station located at 2433 Columbus Road NE in Plain Township. This grant, which is being administered by the Regional Planning Commission (RPC) on behalf of the Land Bank, is being utilized to undertake assessment and remediation activities, including asbestos abatement, building and canopy removal, underground storage tank removal, and soil and water remediation activities. The ultimate goal of this grant is to create an environmentally-sound site that is economically reusable for future redevelopment. |

The Stark County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) department is currently accepting applications for the next three year CDBG funding cycle, FY 2021- 2023. Funding would be available from July 1, 2021 until June 30, 2024. Applications for public service and economic development projects will be accepted for FY ’21 only; while applications for infrastructure and public facility improvement projects will be accepted for FY ’21, ’22, and/or ’23. |

Stark County's FY 2021 HOME Funding

The Stark County Regional Planning Commission is under contract to the Board of Stark County Commissioners to administer the Stark County HOME program. Stark County receives this federal funding as a direct entitlement grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Last year, the County received $853,392 in HOME funding; this was a 13% increase from the previous year. It is expected the County will receive approximately this same amount in FY 2021 funding. This funding will be available for use between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. |

Walk.Bike.Ohio
A New Pedestrian and Bicycling Policy for Ohio
The Ohio Department of Transportation is near completion on a two-year study and planning effort that is developing a new policy for pedestrians and bicyclists. Its vision is that, “Walking and biking in Ohio will be a safe, convenient and accessible transportation option for everyone.”
As part of this plan and policy, ODOT reviewed existing conditions throughout Ohio; conducted a number of surveys and stakeholder meetings; reviewed emerging mobility technologies, as well as the economic and health benefits of “active transportation”; and conducted a safety review.

Summer Work Experience at The Stock Pile
|

The Stock Pile, a nonprofit building material reuse store developed by the RPC, has hosted a variety of volunteers and job training clients over its long history, and this summer was no different. Over the course of summer break, The Stock Pile (TSP) teamed up with various organizations, including Advanced Employment Connections (AEC). According to Jason Hmiel, a teacher and coach who works during the summer as a job coach for AEC, the program is designed to help clients overcome barriers in achieving their vocational goals. There is a focus on treating clients with dignity and respect. Hmiel works very closely with clients the first week, then gradually steps back to observe how things are going. He turns in reports weekly, evaluating strengths and weaknesses, and coaching the clients on areas needing work. His final report notes if it appears they are ready to work independently, or if perhaps another round of job training might be needed. This summer, three young men completed the five-week training program. |

2020 Census Summary
The Stark County Regional Planning Commission (RPC) was a part of a county-wide Complete Count Committee (CCC), established by the Census Bureau to help create localized messaging to encourage people to respond to the 2020 Census. The CCC, chaired by Stark County Commissioner Richard Regula, was comprised of local government and community leaders representing education, business, healthcare, housing and other community organizations. Multiple committee meetings were held between November 2019 and September 2020 to develop strategies and share a collection of resources for committee members to utilize in promoting the importance and safety of the census to their respective audiences.
