Nathaniel's Hope: A Legacy of Love That Continues to Change Lives

Information contained in this article was gathered through a personal conversation with Marie Kuck, co-founder of Nathaniel's Hope, and supplemented by content from Tim and Marie Kuck's book, Hope Lives: Little Life. Big Purpose., and resources available through the Nathaniel's Hope website at www.nathanielshope.org.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, I had the privilege of participating in the Nathaniel’s Hope Make ’m Smile-Ohio event in Hartville, Ohio. The day overflowed with laughter, activities, and moments of pure joy, but what made it truly unforgettable was the opportunity to connect with Marie Kuck, co-founder of Nathaniel’s Hope and mother of Nathaniel. Her courage to transform profound loss into a movement of hope has created a legacy that continues to uplift thousands of families across the country.

Tim and Marie Kuck founded Nathaniel’s Hope in honor of their son, Nathaniel, who faced significant medical and physical challenges and passed away at just four and a half years old. They channeled their love for Nathaniel into a mission of hope, inclusion, and support for children with special needs and their families.

The organization celebrates children with special needs, whom they lovingly call “VIPs” (Very Important Persons), while providing programs, resources, and encouragement to their families. More than twenty years later, Nathaniel’s Hope continues that mission through events, respite programs, and community partnerships that remind families they are seen, valued, and never alone.

Speaking with Marie was deeply moving. Traveling from Orlando, Florida, she attends Nathaniel’s Hope events across the country, helping ensure the mission she and her husband began in their son’s memory continues to thrive. Her passion is evident in every conversation and every embrace she shares with families. Hearing Nathaniel’s story in her own words was a profound reminder that although his years were few, his impact reaches far beyond his lifetime.

Make ’m Smile-Ohio also gave families an opportunity to connect with local resources and support systems. Employees from Stark DD were on hand throughout the day, engaging with families, answering questions, and helping connect children and youth with developmental disabilities and their families to services and supports within their communities. Representing Stark DD were Jack Deveraux, Jeremy Maher, Julie Morelli, Lisa Parramore, and Stefanie Workman, who attended with her son, Logan. Their presence reflected the importance of community partnerships and the commitment of local professionals who work every day to support individuals and families throughout Stark County.

Events like Make ’m Smile offer far more than a day of fun. They build connections, foster understanding, and celebrate the unique gifts of every child. Through the collective efforts of Nathaniel’s Hope, local volunteers, churches, community organizations, and agencies like Stark DD, families are surrounded by a network of encouragement, resources, and support.

Reflecting on the day, I was reminded that Nathaniel’s Hope is more than an organization; it is a living legacy built through compassion, connection, and acceptance. Although Nathaniel spent only four and a half years on this earth, his life continues to inspire change, spark hope, and bring families together.

At the heart of that legacy is the enduring love of a mother determined to make sure her son’s life continues to make a difference. More than two decades later, Marie’s dedication remains unwavering. Through her commitment to ensuring every VIP feels valued, included, and celebrated, Nathaniel’s legacy continues to grow—one child, one family, and one community at a time.

Sincerely,
