Start Year Off by Signing Up for Trust-funded Programs

New and expanded programming offered for Miami-Dade children and families

Our children love the holidays. Time off from school, presents and the possibility of spending countless hours gaming or on social media are just some of the common reasons why today’s kids look forward to the winter holidays. Those are all fine, but they are not the best things about the holidays. It’s a parent’s and caregiver’s responsibility to remind our growing children what is the real value of the holidays.

Although every family is different, there are some constants that we can all point to that make us yearn for December as we sometimes struggle through the rest of the year looking forward to the holidays. Here are seven ways to bring those same values to our kids:

Equip Your Child to Gracefully Climb Mountains

As protectors and guardians of our children, parents get used to taking care of all aspects of their kids’ lives. But as we all know, one day the parents will have to release the responsibility of caring for their children to the children themselves. That’s why teaching them to take care of themselves is one of the most important skills we can impart to them.

Luckily, today we know so much more about what self-care means that we can start our children on a positive path toward it from an early age. How to take care of themselves physically remains among the most important things to teach children, but today’s parents can also make major inroads into helping children care for themselves mentally and emotionally.

Trust Joins Partners for “Walking One Stop” in Hialeah

Trust staff, providers go door-to-door with information and resources

Many of the children and families who most need assistance are often the hardest to reach. Whether because of lack of awareness, housing insecurity, high neighborhood crime rates or other social and physical factors, these individuals do not have the advantage of seeking resources that could help enrich their lives and navigate challenging situations.

That is part of the reason why Wayne Rawlins developed the Walking One Stop model for reaching out to communities in need. And the reason The Children’s Trust partnered with Rawlins to host the first-ever Waking One Stop in Hialeah in early December.

Trust to Open Innovation Fund in February

Up to $1 million will be available to fund multiple projects

The Children’s Trust is committed to investing in evidence-based programs and services that have been shown to positively impact the well-being of children and families. But not all problems facing Miami-Dade County residents can be solved using existing programs or services. Some challenges are new, others have not been identified until now, and still others are known but have not yet been addressed by existing programming.

That is why The Children’s Trust invests in its Innovation Fund, a grant program for innovative ideas and program designs that address existing community needs and have not previously been implemented in our community.

What Trust-Funded Provider is Best for You? Go to Find a Program Web Page!

The Children’s Trust funds hundreds of programs whose mission is to help children, youth and families in Miami-Dade County. But finding the best program for your children can be challenging as parents need to consider different kinds of programs, locations, and a variety of other factors. To guide them through all the choices and help find the one that best their family’s needs, The Trust recently relaunched a new and improved Find-A-Program page on its website.

Parents can get to the page by going to the Trust’s homepage, scrolling down and clicking where it says, “Find a Program,” or going directly to TheChildrensTrust.org/Find-a-Program. Once at the page, visitors can click “Child Care Programs” to search early learning programs, or “Other Programs” that lists after-school, summer camp and special needs programs, as well as family supports and public benefits enrollment programs.

Both pages include maps that visitors can scroll through to find programs by location, as well as filters that allow searches by name, zip code for early learning programs, and by category, grade and age range, and name and zip code for other Trust-funded programs. Specific program info includes emails, websites, location and more.

Book of the Month: Something, Someday Teaches Children to Take Action to Make World Better

Every new year is a chance for children to learn about different cultures, practices and ways they can grow and make a positive impact in their community. In Something, Someday, young readers are introduced to a child who is aware of many things in his life that are wrong. Instead of letting those things weaken his spirit, he sets out to do something about them.

Although many try to discourage him along the way, others join him as he tries to make a small difference in many ways – picking up trash on the sidewalk, planting a community garden and more. Children who learn this story will be emboldened to look at troubling or challenging situations in their life and become emboldened to take actions, even small ones, that can lead to greater impacts.

This month’s selection of Staff Picks from the Miami-Dade Library System draws on different traditions to show how children can celebrate a new start while also making positive changes in their lives and that of their communities. Check them out at www.mdpls.org/staff-picks. To sign up for The Children’s Trust Book Club, where children 0-5 get a free book every month in the mail, text “READ” to 786.460.CLUB (2592).
