Welcome to Spring's
8-Week Courses,
Start Strong, Finish Fast

Hi Desert Warrior,
Welcome to the Spring semester at Imperial Valley College! With the semester officially beginning on Tuesday, February 17, our records indicate that you are enrolled in one or more 8-week courses this term. Because 8-week classes move at an accelerated pace, we’re reaching out with important reminders and helpful tips to ensure you start strong and stay on track from day one.

Review Your Course Details Early

While the Spring semester officially begins February 17, some 8-week courses may have start dates that differ from the traditional 16-week schedule. Not all classes begin or end on the same timeline, so it is important to carefully review the details for each of your enrolled courses.

Use this checklist to feel confident heading into the first week:

  • Confirm your class schedule and start dates
  • Log in to Canvas and check your IVC email
  • Review syllabi as they become available
  • Order required textbooks and supplies early
  • Identify your exam dates
  • Mark your last day to drop without receiving a W
  • Plan weekly study and class time in your calendar
  • Reach out to IVC's support services early if you need help

In 8-week courses, exams and drop deadlines typically occur much sooner than in traditional 16-week classes, so reviewing this information early can make all the difference.

How 8-Week Courses Differ from 16-Week Courses

IVC's 8-week classes are not harder, but they are faster. You’ll meet for classes more often so you can finish in half the time. You will earn the same units as a 16-week course, but finish sooner.

  • Accelerated pace: Assignments, exams, and major deadlines happen sooner and closer together.
  • Earlier key deadlines: Drop dates and major assessments come up quickly.

Missing even one week in an 8-week course can feel like missing more than two weeks in a traditional semester.
