When the calendar flips to January, many people make resolutions to improve their lives. In 2023, consider making a commitment to advocating for yourself so you can live independently and control your own life.
While Disability Rights Texas does offer direct help to some people with disabilities, we also provide a wide range of information you can use on your own self-advocacy journey. Some of our resources educate you about your rights, and some explain how you can get various services. We also provide tools you can use to make your own accommodation request related to work or housing.
Below are some of our new resources you may want to use as you advocate for yourself in 2023.
IDEA Manual
The newly-updated IDEA Manual is packed full of information to help you advocate for your child with a disability who attends public school in Texas. This comprehensive guide will help you work with your child's school to plan an educational program that can lead to an independent and productive life for your child.
Workplace Accommodations
You can request a workplace accommodation if your disability is preventing you from competing for a job, doing a job, or being treated equally on the job. Use our Workplace Accommodation Request Tool to create your own request to submit to an employer.
Emergency Ready
Emergencies and disasters happen all the time in Texas, and being prepared is critical. When you create your own Emergency Ready Sheet, you'll take an important step toward being more prepared. The resource helps you collect your information in one place so you are ready to advocate for your needs before, during, and after a disaster.
And There's More
Be watching for new resources throughout the year, including a new tool coming soon to help you create your own Supported Decision-Making Agreement and a self-advocacy video series created by our self-advocate intern.
Our website also includes many other self-advocacy resources that are categorized by topic. You can find help with education, healthcare, housing, work, and other disability rights issues. Visit our Self-Advocacy Resources page to browse the topics and learn more about how you can advocate for yourself.
