"I don’t trust people who don’t love themselves and tell me, ‘I love you.’ … There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.”
– Maya Angelou
I know this reads a little heavy as we celebrate the month of love, but what I want to take away from this quote is the importance of loving yourself. Our words will ring vacant onto others if we are not embracing love entirely, which includes loving yourself.
It is so interesting how we neglect our own self-worth and place others on a pedestal. We think we are not smart enough, fast enough, thin enough… blah blah blah, and everyone else has it figured out. It is amazing that we sometimes talk to ourselves in a way we would never talk to anyone else. It is self-destructive and minimizes the authenticity of your words.
My only solution is to counteract those negative thoughts with positive ones. It’s not easy to do and takes diligent practice. There is no light without darkness, so if there is a negative thought in your mind, I bet you can dig deep and find a positive one.
Start by loving yourself and you will feel more authentic joy loving others.
Peace and love,
