Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous lesion of the outer layer of the skin caused by long term sun exposure. These lesions are termed pre-cancerous because if not treated they have the potential to progress into a Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer. They are most commonly found on sun exposed surfaces of the body including face, ears, lips, neck, scalp, forearms and back of hands. The appearance of Actinic Keratosis may vary but most often they appear red and scaly. There are multiple treatment options for AK’s including cryosurgery or freezing with liquid nitrogen, using topical creams and photodynamic therapy
(blue light). Sun protection and avoidance is the most important factor in preventing Actinic Keratoses.
