International Assistance Dog Week: Aug 2-Aug 8
This week is International Assistance Dog Week, which is all about celebrating the thousands of assistance dogs—including guide dogs, medical alert dogs, emotional support dogs, and others—who make life more accessible for their owners with disabilities. The week also celebrates the work of assistance dog trainers and promotes action to ensure everyone who needs an assistance dog can get connected with one. Assistance Dog Day also took place during this week on August 4th.
International CHARGE Syndrome Awareness Day: Aug 8
This international observance promotes awareness of CHARGE Syndrome, a genetic condition that is characterized by multiple symptoms including heart defects and developmental delays. The goal of the observance is to increase understanding of the variability of CHARGE Syndrome to improve diagnosis and access to medical interventions.
National Accessible Air Travel Day: Aug 20
National Accessible Air Travel Day raises awareness of the importance of accessible air travel. It also calls attention to travelers with disabilities' right to receive the accommodations they need when traveling by air, such as assistance with wheelchairs, boarding, deplaning, or connecting flights. Some ways to participate include posting on social media, writing to members of Congress, or joining an organization dedicated to the cause.
