Purposeful communication is about building a connective tissue between family engagement and classroom instruction, learning, and assessment. It is a two-way exchange between educators and families that is ongoing, responsive, and centered on student learning. Rather than simply sharing information, interactive communication invites families to ask questions, share insights from home, and engage as partners in the learning process. For educators, this approach means intentionally creating multiple opportunities for dialogue, both formal and informal, that build shared understanding, trust, and collaboration over time.
It is initiated by the teacher and can be directed to individual families or to the whole class. This communication can take many forms: text messages, phone calls, emails, newsletters, Friday folders, and quick conversations during drop-off or pick-up and home visits.
Other forms of communication are face to face during scheduled family events and activities throughout the year. Each in-person event presents opportunities to deepen the connection with families as a group and individually.
