Navigating Winter Term Success

Happy New Year!

As your student settles into the Winter Term, it’s already time to start planning for the year ahead—whether it’s finding a place to live or exploring job opportunities. The university is hosting several events to help your student navigate these important decisions.

This month’s Residence Connection features key upcoming events and helpful information about living on and off campus next year, wellness reminders, and a preview of some upcoming events in our dining halls!

Reach out to us at reslife@queensu.ca with any questions about residence, and to dining@queensu.ca to connect about food on campus.

Resource Spotlight: Residence Life Coordinators

Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs) are full-time, professional live-in staff responsible for establishing a cohesive and vibrant residence community.

They supervise Dons, and support the community through educational programming, team development, critical response, and student conduct. RLCs are available to discuss any questions regarding community or resident concerns.

If your student needs support, encourage them to contact their Don or RLC.

Preparing for Living Off-Campus

If your student is preparing to make the transition to off-campus living next year, we highly recommend they:

The Off-Campus Living Advisor (OCLA) Office is available to provide confidential guidance and resources to assist your student in navigating the Kingston rental market, tenant rights and responsibilities, finding housemates, applications, lease agreements, and tips for moving in/out.

Living in Residence next year

There are a small number of residence rooms for upper-year undergraduate students in 2026–27 in Watts Hall.

The application deadline is February 5 at 4 pm ET.

Visit our Upper-Year Students page for more information.

Happy New Year from Dining

We’re excited to share upcoming menu features and events in Jean Royce, Leonard, and Ban Righ dining halls!

Lunar New Year Celebration – February 17

We will be marking this special occasion with festive food features that bring the flavours and traditions of Lunar New Year to campus.

Introducing: Taste of Home

We know how meaningful family recipes can be. Encourage your student to share their favourite recipe from home for a chance to win Flex $ and see their recipe featured in our dining halls! Whether it’s a comforting family classic, a traditional favourite, or something special they’ve grown up enjoying, we’d love to hear the stories behind it and share it with our community.

Top up your student's meals

If your student eats most of their meals in the dining halls, you can increase their 19 weekly meals to 21 for the rest of the academic year.

Prorated rates apply. For more information, email dining@queensu.ca.

Supporting student job searches

Queen's Career Services’ Summer & Part-time Job Fair is Tuesday, January 20, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm, in Mitchell Hall, Bartlett Gym. It’s a great chance for your student to explore job opportunities, network with employers, and access career coaching, résumé reviews, and advising.

The Engineering & Technology Career Fair follows on Wednesday, January 21, also in Mitchell Hall's Bartlett Gym, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm, focusing on opportunities in Engineering, Computing, and Technology.

For job and career search support, students are encouraged to:

Tips for managing virus season

Various respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses are circulating in Kingston (and elsewhere!) at this time of year. We are encouraging students to prevent the spread of coughs, colds, flu, and COVID-19 by avoiding going out while sick, and taking extra precautions like masking in crowded indoor spaces.

Encourage them to call their doctor or Student Wellness Services if they:

  • Have other health issues (e.g., asthma, diabetes) that worsen when sick.
  • Experience severe fatigue, dehydration, or fever lasting more than 5 days.
  • Have worsening symptoms after starting to recover.

In emergencies (e.g., severe shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion), they should call 911 or go to the emergency department.
