May 2022 President’s Message
April showers brought new green to the hills of the Redwood Region, and the three club events we had were terrific and played to the different interests of our members. I hope you will read about each of them in this month’s der Riesenbaum and come out and join us next time! I enjoyed meeting new members on each of these Saturdays and learning about their love of their Porsches. Our tour to the Union Hotel provided outstanding views all along the way to a scrumptious lunch, and the race day operations tour with the Flying Lizard group and Porsche Sprint Challenge was a fun way to spend a Saturday, thanks to the efforts of member Brad Williams. The Sonoma County wine-pairing gimmick rally (thanks to Craig Steele and Jim Robison) was just plain fantastic on a gorgeous day and the scores were very competitive!
Our autocross season starts in just a few days with a weekend of driving at Thunderhill, hosted jointly with the Sacramento Valley Region on the 14th and 15th. Registration ends May 11th, and if you’re even a little curious, now is the time to give it a try. The pavement there is in tip top shape, and there is enough acreage to have big, fun courses that are worth the journey up I-5. If your tires are looking for something closer to home, Rick Duste has put together our next midweek tour on Wednesday May 18th, ending up along the Russian River at the Northwood Bistro. Registration ends May 14th. May 21st brings the return of the Devils Gulch Rally thanks to Jerry Wachtel and Jim Robison. This is where I cut my rally teeth last year and learned how to use the Richta rally smartphone app, so if you haven’t tried a TSD rally, this is a good one. Registration is open until the 15th.
June brings us longer and warmer days so of course we have a great backroads tour planned for Sunday June 12th ending back at the Martorana Family Winery in Dry Creek. Just like last year, we get exclusive use of their beautiful creekside bocce ball courts and picnic tables along with a great box lunch and 5 wines to taste. Registration closes June 5th. Saturday June 25th brings out the most beautiful Porsches in Northern California with our annual Porsches on the Plaza in downtown Sonoma where all proceeds go to charity. Registration opens soon. And there could be another rally snuck in June somewhere too.
The Board always appreciates your input, so please volunteer both your interests and your time. Leadership positions will be open to new candidates in just five short months, so now is a good time to learn more! Email us directly or attend our monthly Board meeting on Tuesday May 31st at Mary’s Pizza Shack in Novato at 7 PM. Dinner is always on the club – you just pay for your drink (Zoom will also available if you wish to attend remotely). Please see our calendar link at redwoodpca.org for details.
Lastly, our club's Bylaws are undergoing revision and members will receive electronic ballots soon for final approval. Please read the summary of changes from our current Bylaws further on down in this month's der Riesenbaum.

Occidental on Purpose Lunch Tour
Saturday April 9th was a gorgeous day at the end of a week of very warm weather, and 18 shiny Porsches met up at the usual spot in Vintage Oaks for a 55 mile backroads drive to the Union Hotel restaurant in Occidental. It was definitely top-down weather as we snaked west through Novato and out Marshall-Petaluma road, before meeting up with Highway 1 north along Tomales Bay, then back inland into Sonoma County and some of the unique smaller roads east of Occidental. These smaller roads along the crest of the hills west of Sebastopol provided tremendous views down into valleys on each side.
Thanks to the skills of our mid-conga relay Essy Fariab and sweep Rick Duste, no one got separated, although our well-mannered pace also received an assist from an unexpected Lexus SUV. (Members who recall a similar tour to the Union Hotel before the pandemic will understand that this person is now an honorary member of the Packard Club.) We also got to see the monthly “Breakfast Club Rally” driving the opposite direction as our tour, providing some vicarious enjoyment on Marshall-Petaluma. Surprisingly, we were later unimpeded along Highway 1 which is a rare treat!
|
|
|
|
Lunch at the Union Hotel is always fun, with two tables of 15 happily sharing stories, a glass of wine, and a salad, soup, bread and pasta festival family style (with plenty of leftovers too)! Our server somehow managed to single-handedly run every course and drink ticket with aplomb and I guarantee no one left hungry.
We will definitely return on this route in the future although we may change the name to the “Who needs dinner when you can carbo-load at lunch for less?” tour; I hope you can come! We have also discovered that member Rex Simmons has offered a wonderful location for our Annual Meeting on Saturday October 8th not far from Occidental. Details on that will be forthcoming.

FLAXING THEIR MUSCLE
Porsche wants to stop using carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is arguably the most popular way of increasing rigidity and strength while minimizing weight gains, but it's not the only strong lightweight material out there. Various manufacturers have experimented with flax fibers, as seen on a Porsche racecar in 2020. One of the leading companies in this field, Bcomp, says that its ampliTex material is the future of lightweight cars. Clearly, motorsport is where the company is seeing most applications of its products, but as a greener alternative to carbon fiber. With EVs squashing the scales thanks to heavy battery packs, anything that can reduce weight should be explored. Hopefully, we'll get to see some mainstream automotive applications soon.
BE FUEL-ISH
Porsche is upping its investment in the development of climate-neutral “e-fuels” made to replace gasoline in traditional combustion engines allowing Porsche to continue producing vehicles such as the iconic 911 sports car with a traditional engine alongside new electric models. Porsche announced a long-term investment in Highly Innovative Fuels Global, headquartered in the U.S. with operations in Chile. Electricity-based fuels, or e-fuels, are clean, carbon-neutral fuels produced from renewable, green hydrogen and carbon dioxide taken from the atmosphere. Porsche, who is now the second largest shareholder in the company expects to use the e-fuels from Chile first in motorsports, followed potentially by uses in new consumer vehicles.
ASSAULT & BATTERY
New reports suggest we could see a Porsche 911 EV in the future with new solid-state battery technology. In a recent financial report, Porsche’s CEO Oliver Blume said it is fully committed to electrifying its lineup of all vehicles except for the iconic 911. However, Electrek recently reported on a quote from Germany’s Manager Magazin, that says the success of the all-electric Taycan could have Porsche thinking twice, suggesting the company could use a solid-state battery vs. the traditional Lithium-ion battery system auto makers employ today. The German website claims that Porsche has been working with a U.S. company named Quantumscape on this breakthrough technology to bolster its EV plans and take its 911 to new heights.
WHAT A DRAG
In 2025, Porsche will be celebrating 50 years since the birth of the 911 Turbo. Porsche has been building the 911 Turbo since 1975 when the 930 Turbo (296 horsepower) debuted Porsche’s first use of turbocharger technology. As time went on, Porsche continued to develop the 911 Turbo into the current generation 992 911 Turbo S (641 horsepower) representing one of the highest performing vehicles ever built by Porsche. After almost half a century of ever-increasing performance and capability, not to mention a collective 3,238 horsepower, seven generations of 911 Turbos line up for what may be a once in a lifetime series of quarter mile drag races assembled by British YouTuber Matt Watson of CarWow, whose website has exceeded two billion views. Click here to watch the fun.
I COULD HAVE HAD A V-8
The mantra "flat sixes forever" may soon be annihilated by Porsche’s twin-turbo hybrid V8 Le Mans prototype racer built to run in the new LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid) class in the World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. The new V8 will be paired with hybrid tech and run on renewable fuels. Porsche claims a power output of around 670 horsepower in race trim. While the engine's rev limit is capped at 10,000 rpm, there is also a sound limit of 110 decibels which is the rough equivalent of a jackhammer. The car will make its official race debut at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona. Porsche became the first LMDh manufacturer to publicly unveil its new GTP race car, with others slated to roll out throughout the year.
RS - S’IL VOUS PLAÎT
Porsche's RS-badged machines have become synonymous with ultimate performance. A report from late last year suggested that three new versions of the Porsche 911 would be coming soon. It seems that the possibility of a Carrera RS is all but a foregone conclusion. Porsche would launch this in 2023 as part of its 50th-anniversary celebrations and would endow it with retro touches like Fuchs-style wheels and an integrated ducktail spoiler. The Carrera RS would be even more powerful, possibly producing a GT3-challenging 472 horsepower from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter motor. In addition, Porsche will almost certainly implement a number of weight-saving measures to give this a more engaging drive.
LEADING THE CHARGE
Porsche recently held its annual meeting in which it announced the greatly exciting prospect of two new all-electric models: the 718 Cayman and the new Macan. An even more exciting prospect was Porsche’s announcement of a vast new EV charging network which the Stuttgart superpower described as “clever and universal charging facilities for use on the road as well as at home”. This could be a network to rival that of Tesla and could be a key element in the growth of Porsche's electric products. Selling EVs needs infrastructure, and if Porsche and VW want to have an EV charging network to meet their vast sales and requirements, they must create their own.
DREAM ON
Porsche Classic will now build custom one-off cars. Customers will be integrated into a team of Porsche designers and engineers to go through the process of building their dream car as part of its Sonderwunsch (special request) program, transforming their car into almost anything they want. Customization typically involves transforming the materials in the interior or refinishing the exterior paintwork, but upgrades to the powertrain and suspension components are also now possible. Since Porsche is expanding its Paint to Sample choices to over 160 colors, a typical build could be something like a 997-generation 911 GT2 RS finished in Oak Green Metallic, like the Carrera GT it built a few years ago. Porsche says things like a water-cooled 930 could also be possible.

This month we're doing something a bit different with this column. I'd like to shine our spotlight on the Executive Council positions of our club's Board of Directors, describing the duties involved so that if you've ever wondered, "Do I have the time and capabilities to perform this position?" maybe you will get your answer. Some of the positions do not require as much of a commitment as you may have thought...
The four executive positions, as with most Boards are: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
Duties of the President
The President runs the meetings of the Executive Council and the Board of Directors. (He works with the Secretary to set the agenda from the standardized template.)
The President publishes a President's report in the Club’s newsletter.
The President obtains liability insurance from PCA national for all events.
The President is a member of the National Board of Directors and participates in all National Board of Directors meetings.(He is the liaison between PCA national and the region.)
The President is in charge of the annual meeting and the 1/1 Fun Run.
Duties of the Vice President
The Vice President takes over for the President in case... The Vice President coordinates and updates the club calendar. The VP is responsible for developing and publishing the calendar. This includes running the annual planning meeting, getting to plan the Holiday Party and ensuring that our events are constructed on MSR. (We will provide MSR training.)
Duties of the Secretary
The Secretary attends all meetings of the Executive Council and the Board of Directors and keeps full and complete minutes of the proceedings and all voting. The Secretary provides the minutes for the website to publish. The Secretary has custody of the Club’s National Charter and all non-financial records at all times. The Secretary utilizes standardized templates to disseminate the agendas for meetings, keep the minutes, etc.
Duties of the Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for all monies, debts, obligations and assets belonging to the Club. The Treasurer gives a report on the financial status of the Club at each Board meeting. The Treasurer keeps the books electronically. The Treasurer becomes the signatory of all checks and accounts. The checking account and credit cards are managed by the Treasurer. (The President uses a charge card as overseen by the Treasurer.) The Treasurer's books are reviewed by the Finance committee annually. The Treasurer files annual taxes which are simple for our 501(c)7 organization.

You finish a great day of autocross, but the next morning you may feel your shoulders are sore. You had a blast on a spirited run, but then your calves feel stiff. Here are a few carefully curated (not difficult) stretches to keep you ready for the next time you get behind the wheel.
We'll start from the bottom up. This month: calves.
|
|
|
|
Stand in front of a wall with your toes and nose touching the wall. Pace your hands flat on the wall at shoulder height. Step your right foot back as far as possible until your arms are straight but your palms are still flat on the wall. Now lean forward (bending your arms) keeping both feet firmly planted and your legs straight until you feel a stretch in your right calf. Hold for at least 15 seconds. Now bend that back knee, keeping your foot where it is and feel the stretch move to a different part of your calf. Hold for 15 seconds. Then repeat the whole exercise with your right foot forward and your left foot back.
The easiest stretch of all is to stand with your toes up higher than your heels. Use any prop such as a curb, a board, or an inclined plane. Again try it with your knees both bent and straight. Do one leg at a time if you have balance issues. Hold for 15-30 seconds.
For people who practice yoga regularly, Down Dog is a wonderful calf stretch as is a deep squat.
Note: there are two different muscles in your calf, the gastrocnemius and the soleus. A bent knee gets the soleus and a straight leg gets the gastroc.
Stay tuned next month for another muscle group.

Jim Robison
Rally Director
Does broccoli pair well with Furthermore Wines? Does Hawkes Cabernet Sauvignon pair with kumquats? How about Two Black Widow Vineyard paired with salsa? And, of course, frog legs should pair well with Toad Hollow Vineyard, right? Well, according to the “Wine Pairing Rally,” they do.
Saturday April 23rd was a beautiful day for a drive through the Sonoma County wine country. The route took us from the Graton Fire Department north, roughly along the Russian River to the Alexander Valley, then south to our finish in Windsor. Forty-five wineries were identified, in alphabetical order, along with foods they supposedly paired well with. The objective was to list the foods in the correct order on the scorecard as the wineries appeared along the route. It’s as simple as Passalacqua and fruit cake!
A perfect score was 135. Jeff Hall and Kathleen Smith, in their 2010 Porsche 911-997.2, and Don Nohai and Ann Marie Trione, in their 2002 Porsche Carrera 2 Cabriolet, tied with 130 points. The tie was broken by the shortest elapsed time from start to finish, with Jeff and Kathleen taking first place and Don and Ann Marie taking second,
Speaking of ties, we had a three-way tie at 124 points between Brad and Anika Williams in their 2007 Porsche Cayman, Allen and Mary Samuels in their 2018 Toyota Highlander, and Craig and Sandy Steele in their 2011 Porsche Cayman S. Again, ties were broken by total route time and third, fourth and fifth place went respectively to the Williams, Samuels, and Steeles.
Keeping with the wine and food pairing theme, “trophies” consisted of bottles of wine and their corresponding foods, along with a place ribbon. First place was a bottle of La Crema Pinot Noir with a Snickers bar and a bottle of MacRostie Chardonnay with a bag of potato chips. Second place was a bottle of Sonoma-Cutrer Pinot Noir with a bag of Cheetos and a bottle of Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc with an Almond Joy candy bar. Third place was a bottle of J. Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon with a bag of M & M's.
Our next rally is “Devil’s Gulch 2022” on Saturday May 21st. This time-speed-distance (TSD) rally starts in San Rafael and finishes in Windsor. With multiple speed changes and 16 checkpoints along the 105-mile paved route, Devil’s Gulch will challenge even the most experienced teams. Registration is open to PCA members from all regions.
Jim Robison (Redwood) and Darrel Huckabay (Sacramento Valley) are working on an interesting TSD scheduled for June 18th. The “Alternate Route Rally,” starting and finishing in Dixon, will give contestants their choice of paved or gravel routes.
“There and Back Again” on July 16 & 17, will consist of two TSD rallies with an overnight stay at the Twin Pines Resort & Casino in Middletown. All roads are paved with a start in Napa and a finish in Sonoma. Tours following the rally routes will be offered both days for folks who like to drive (and party) but don’t want to be concerned with arriving at checkpoints on time.
The “Mt. Tam Trek” Saturday August 13th will start at Marin Porsche and finish at Mary’s Pizza in Novato. The all-paved, 85-mile TSD will include two breaks at scenic rest areas. A tour is also planned to follow the rally route through some of the most scenic country in America.
On September 10th, the Redwood region will host the “Harvest Moon Rally,” an 80-mile paved road night TSD starting in Santa Rosa about 7 PM and finishing in Rohnert Park about 10:00 PM. It’s amazing how the entire environment changes when the sun sets. Roads you have driven a dozen times in the daylight become new, different, more interesting and perhaps more exotic.
For more information on any of these events, please contact Jim Robison, Rally Director.

Summary of Bylaw Revisions
|
|
|
|
Summary of Proposed Redwood Region Bylaw Changes for 2022
The Redwood Region PCA Bylaws (our procedural governing document) were last updated in 2016. In February 2021, PCA National created new standards for Region Bylaws. During our review of the standards, the Board has recommended several changes to our existing document. The changes and updates to the revised Redwood Region Bylaws reflect current practices, participation, and volunteerism. Most changes were minor and administrative; important changes are emphasized below:
- Dual Members (that is, members who have PCA membership in both Redwood Region and another Region) may serve on the Executive Council; they could previously serve on the Board of Directors in non-elective offices only and vote in Region elections [Article IV, Section 7]
-
Both Active (Primary) Members and Family-Active members may serve in an elected officer position, but only one from any given family may serve concurrently; previously, Family-Active members could not serve on the Executive Council; 2021 PCA National Bylaws standards recommend this change. [Article IV, Section 7]
- The (6) voting members of the Board of Directors each in charge of a functional area are: Membership, Events, Autocross, Rally, Safety and Communications. Previously Concours Director was a voting member; it now reports to the Events Director. There was no Rally Director in the prior version [Article VIII]
- The Northern Representative was removed as a Board position; it has not been populated since the prior Bylaws created it. [Article VIII]
- The categories of Honorary Member and Life Member were removed as these are not part of the PCA National standards and our region does not have any of these members.
- Substantial revision to the club logo requires a majority vote of the membership; this was not addressed in the prior Bylaws but was suggested in the 2021 PCA National standard Bylaw template.
The full text of both the existing Bylaws and the draft 2022 Bylaws may be found on the Club’s website.
In the next two months, Redwood Region members will receive an electronic ballot with a request to approve these changes.

PCA Redwood Grill Badge
My name is Rob, a Porsche enthusiast from The Netherlands in Europe.
In January I acquired a 1974 Porsche 911S. This 911 has a window sticker from the 50th anniversary Redwood PCA. This 911 used to drive in the Redwood area and the previous owner lived in Ukiah.
I really would like to decorate my new 911 with a grill badge from PCA Redwood district.

Vintage Redwood Region Badge
(with the drive-through tree)
My Redwood Region Badge is beyond repair, and I am putting together a shadow box with some PCA and Porsche memorabilia including the Porsche 100 Jahre badge, factory Besucher Tour sticker, PCA badge and the badges from Redwood Region, the late and great Germany Region and now the Santa Barbara Region.
I am looking for a vintage badge to replace mine. It should be in fairly good condition but I don't expect something that old to be pristine.
If you are willing to part with yours,
