We remove barriers, build communities, and empower women

The Center for Women in Business began 2026 with strong momentum - welcoming new corporate partners and amplifying our research on the global stage by kicking off a UN panel on the power of caregivers as workplace assets. As we enter Women’s History Month, we’re excited to celebrate six years of impact.

Soon, we’ll release our first-ever Impact Report, highlighting the progress we’ve built together and the path ahead. The urgency behind our mission has never been clearer: between January and August 2025, more than 450,000 women left the U.S. workforce, largely women with young children - the very population we are committed to supporting. Protecting this leadership pipeline is not just right; it’s essential to building high-performing, inclusive workplaces.

We kick off Women’s History Month with our Annual Golf Clinic this Sunday, and close with an inspiring webinar featuring women redefining success on their own terms. Please join us in celebrating the power of community, connection, and leadership this month — and all year long.

Recent CWIB Research

CWIB Research Highlighted at Global UN Panel:

"Unlocking the Power of Care: Skills, Equity, and Social Transformation."

This month, our Executive Director, Lisa Kaplowitz, kicked off a United Nations panel by sharing research that reframes caregiving as a powerful leadership advantage - not a workplace liability. With 73% of employees balancing caregiving responsibilities, organizations risk losing critical talent when they fail to recognize the skills that caregivers bring to the workplace. CWIB research identified 18 leadership competencies developed through caregiving, helping move this conversation onto the global stage. (And we continue to advance research to recognize and reward these essential skills).

In the short video below (click image to play), watch Lisa deliver key findings from our research.

Why Competitive Women Are Sometimes Seen as Threats

What really drives women’s reactions to competition—especially among one another?

Recent research by our Post Doctoral Associate Krystal Duarte shows that women don’t generally dislike competitive women overall. Rather, they respond differently depending on who the competition affects. When competition threatens close allies or themselves, it can strain trust and cooperation. When it’s directed outward—toward a rival or an external target—it’s often accepted or even supported.

This lens helps explain tall poppy effects, queen bee narratives, and why high-achieving women sometimes face backlash from those closest to them.

At the Rutgers Center for Women in Business, the focus is on shifting attention away from “fixing women” and toward fixing structures. Our research emphasizes that gender dynamics are shaped less by individual behavior and more by systems that foster scarcity, reward competition over collaboration, and penalize women differently for ambition. When organizations redesign cultures and incentives to support collective advancement, the tensions underlying these dynamics ease—and women’s success becomes more sustainable and widely shared.

We’re thrilled to announce that RenaissanceRe and Crum & Forster have joined the Center for Women in Business (CWIB) as new corporate partners.

Together, we’re advancing research-driven approaches to inclusive leadership and building high-performing workplaces where everyone can thrive. We’re grateful for their partnership.
