Mental Health Moment

Life can throw curveballs that feel like a monumental shift in how we see our future. Having to make these huge changes at a midlife point can feel unfathomable, but we are more capable than we give ourselves credit for. Building up a career just to have it taken over by the changing landscape, or having a marriage end after spending a decade with someone, or maybe you’ve just been feeling restless and unsettled by life lately and feel like it’s pushing you in the direction of a major change.

Change can be scary, but it's also exciting. And no matter your age, you can always make a change for the better. Whether this means changing careers, building new relationships, or moving across the country, you can find ways to make these changes a little less intimidating.

Reflect and Examine

Take time to reflect on what you want to change in your life and why. While some circumstances or choices may have been outside of your control, you have the power to choose how you move forward. Give yourself grace as you reflect on what matters most to you and the steps you can take toward positive change.

Try writing down three things you can control in your life right now. By focusing on what is within your control, you can feel more grounded, build confidence in your ability to move forward, and empower yourself to create meaningful change.

Rewrite Your Goals

Starting over starts with a solid foundation. Goals can be big or small, helping you move toward the overall goal you have in mind. Start by setting up SMART goals. This stand for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Specific: Plan effectively with specific targets in mind.

Measurable: Track your progress and reevaluate along the way.

Attainable: Set realistic goals that are challenging but achievable.

Relevant: Ensure the goal serves a relevant purpose.

Timely: Specify a deadline, monitor progress, and reevaluate.

Make a Move

Taking the first step can be one of the scariest parts of starting over. This is where SMART goals come into play. They provide a clear roadmap to help you identify where to begin, establish realistic steps, and stay focused on where you want to go. By breaking your goals into manageable steps, you can build confidence and make progress at a pace that works for you.

Making changes in your life, whether big or small, is both brave and exciting. Building a support system can help you feel more comfortable, stay motivated, and navigate challenges along the way. Support can come in many forms, from an encouraging spouse to family and friends who offer guidance and assistance, or even a mental health professional who can help you work through difficult emotions. Sometimes, a combination of these resources provides the well-rounded support you need to move forward with confidence.
