A view from Dry Hollow
Walk on sand and through forest all in a day at Dry Hollow!

Dear explorers,

Dry Hollow Week is finally here and we can't wait to explore this area with you! This week's destination was made open to the public in February through an effort between ClearWater Conservancy and PA-DCNR to permanently conserve the property and add 1,271 acres of land to Rothrock State Forest. Dry Hollow holds significant ecological value and consists of a variety of different habitats and landscapes that showcase the diversity and complexity of our region’s forests.

During your visit, look for vernal pools and listen for birds overhead as you walk along forested trails and through a giant sand pit that supports rare vegetation and wildlife. There are wide trails throughout the property that are ideal for hiking and mountain biking and narrower trails that lead to scenic views and unique features of the property. When you arrive, stop at the Centred Outdoors welcome area to select the trails and activities that are the best fit for you.

Where is Dry Hollow?

Dry Hollow is located approximately twenty miles, about a thirty-minute drive, southwest of State College. When you arrive, you will follow a long drive that leads to the parking area and the welcome area. Click here for driving directions.

When can I join a guided hike at Dry Hollow?

Centred Outdoors will host events at the Dry Hollow Property on Sunday, July 18 from 12-6 p.m., Wednesday July 21 from 9 a.m-1 p.m., and Friday, July 23 from 6-8 p.m.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the property at their own pace and meet with ClearWater staff along the way to learn about its geography and history while gaining a better understanding of how these features contribute to the quality and quantity of our region’s water supply and the biodiversity throughout the area.

Will wellness activities will be offered this week?

Yes, on Sunday, July 18 at 1 and 3 p.m., you are invited to participate in a mindful drumming experience hosted by Jana Marie Foundation. Immerse yourself in the rhythms of nature as you use drums and other percussion to connect with self and nature. A forest bathing experience led by Lucy Heggenstaller will also be offered on Sunday from 4-5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, between 11:30 a.m. and 1p.m., you'll have the opportunity to create your own nature cards. Use earthy elements to make one-of-a-kind notecards that capture and reflect the beauty of nature around you.

On Friday, July 23 at 6 p.m., you are invited to create peaceful poetry, where participants can express themselves through language and connect with nature by crafting original poems inspired by their surroundings.

How can I best prepare for this adventure?
Prepare for your trip by packing your filled water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. Wear a hat, long pants, and long sleeves for extra protection from sun, insects, and ticks. Please note that cell service is limited at this destination. You can find additional safety tips on the Centred Outdoors website.

If you have any questions about this week's events, email us at info@centredoutdoors.org.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing you for our next adventure!
