DAR Funds Rev War Era Records Project

A digitization project funded by the NYS Organization, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has begun on recently discovered records!

(Scan on right)

This project involves digitization and development of educational materials for the New York State Archives' first volume of Journals of the Auditor General, 1775-1785 – a series consisting of two journals illustrating the variety of expenditures and receipts of New York's government during the Revolutionary War including reimbursements to average citizens for their contributions to the war effort.

Many of the recorded transactions document Revolutionary War activities of the new state government and its citizens. The type of information presented within these records is crucial to understanding the day-to-day activities during this time and the complex environment of Revolutionary-era New York State and further represents an important step toward preserving and sharing the documentary heritage of the colonial period with scholars, educators, and beyond across the Empire State. By digitizing this material, the project supports the long-term preservation of these records while expanding access for scholars, educators, and the public interested in the formation and administration of New York State.

UAlbany Students Explore Film Censorship at the New York State Archives

Students in UAlbany’s film studies minor recently gained hands-on experience with original motion picture scripts, censorship records, and production files during a visit to the New York State Archives’ Motion Picture Division.

The Archives holds one of the world’s most extensive collections of film censorship materials, offering rare insight into the legal, cultural, and political forces that influenced American cinema.

With guidance from Archives staff and faculty experts, students learned how archivists preserve sensitive materials while making them accessible for research.
