In August 2002, digital photography was emerging for everyday users. "Cultural Heritage Imaging" was NOT a thing. We liked the name, and the acronym, and when we told people what we were doing, we mostly got quizzical looks.
Looking back, the real hero in this journey has been the community. Well, that and Marlin - I mean, who doesn’t love Marlin? Anyone who has collaborated with us or taken a class with us knows what a great asset he is to CHI, and the whole community.
We’ve had the great joy of working alongside museum photographers, conservators, Indigenous culture bearers, historians, archaeologists, librarians, and dedicated volunteers (including our fabulous board). We’ve collaborated with imaging scientists and digital preservation specialists across the globe.
To everyone who has taken a workshop, volunteered on a project, shared technical insights, introduced us to new collaborators, or advocated for rigorous digital documentation: thank you! CHI exists because of your support and shared commitment to preserving human history. We look forward to continuing this work together.
