January 31, 2025

Hello Sara,

With new elected leadership on the national and local front, what the year ahead holds for Early Care Educators of San Francisco and throughout the country is full of uncertainties. One thing is certain. Our best way forward is holding each other with compassion, spreading good and useful information, and creating ways to come together as a community to make a difference.

To that end, ECESF has started the year off with a bang:

  • Supporting the implementation of the SEQUAL Survey, announcing to you it is available to all 0-5 ECE center and FCC educators — and bringing news of SEQUAL to City College SF campuses
  • Providing you with Hot Takes (English, 粵語口語, Español) a way to save and share your high-level thoughts just after you take the SEQUAL Survey
  • Bringing ECESF and key community issues to last Saturday’s ECE Advocacy & Policy Retreat—see recommended immigrant rights and resources from the retreat below
  • Readying our ECE community with the retreat’s election debrief, UPK, and the landscape for ECE on the local and state levels as we prepare for the budget season ahead.

This newsletter brings you follow-up resources and next steps to support your engagement in the SEQUAL survey, community discussions, advocating for budget and program needs, and learning opportunities.

A collective response to the White House memo freezing spending on federal loans made a difference. With your involvement, we can advocate together for what we know we need to keep our communities safe, and the programs that serve us funded. We look forward to continuing the fireworks with you for our victories, large and small, throughout the year.

May your 2025 and Lunar New Year strengthen you and build a supportive community to keep us healthy and cared for.

Collaboratively,

Sara Hicks-Kilday

Hot Takes

Your notes for after you respond to SEQUAL

On January 21 the SEQUAL survey was released for all ECE center and FCC educators in San Francisco. (See the CSCCE letter above for more information and how to take the survey.) The survey will provide important information on adult ECE work environments that will inform San Francisco ECE strategies to improve workplace and related ECE service quality. Many educators asked for a way to save their responses to shed further light on nuances behind the data and pinpoint more individualized changes needed at the teaching team and site level.

At an ECESF community gathering, educators suggested creating this "Hot Takes" form (English, 粵語口語, Español) as a way to save the responses most important to you. We invite you to fill the form out to capture your high-level thoughts just after taking the SEQUAL survey, and bring your responses into ECESF discussions, and the community, team, or site discussions of your choice to identify and shape the changes you most need.

Immigrant Rights & Resources

Important for Early Care & Education sites, schools, and other places of care to support our community at all times, as rhetoric and actions against immigrants increase and exacerbate fears, having trusted resources is essential. At the ECE Advocacy & Policy Retreat, ECE community members raised the importance of ECE sites having an immigrant support and response plan as well as making sure all at the site know basic rights and response preparedness.

Does your site have a plan to share with the ECE community? Please send your plan to info@eces.org and we will share it with our ECE community.

Here is a guidance tool for promoting a safe and secure learning environment for all directed toward K12 schools from the California Department of Justice.

Here are resources recommended by ECE community members:

The San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement & Immigrant Affairs has important links to:

San Francisco Rapid Response Network, includes step-by-step instructions on how to use the hotline number to report ICE activity. Their resource page includes an illustration of an administrative warrant (which is not a valid warrant for obtaining entry access to a premises) vs a judicial warrant, along with other useful information.

Know your rights with ICE from Immigrant Defence Project, includes printable infographics in multiple languages for various ICE situations.

ECE Equity Leadership Academy, Children’s Council/DEC

The ECE Equity Leadership Academy interest form is now available for supervisors and administrators working in early childhood education (ECE). Through this new, innovative program, we aim to build upon the leadership in our community and amplify the voices of diverse ECE leaders. The ECE Equity Leadership Academy is an executive-level program for Center Directors, Administrators and Family Child Care (FCC) Owner/Directors to increase their knowledge, skills, and understanding of leadership grounded in racial equity, social justice and values identification.

We are looking for 30 ECE leaders to participate who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to successfully build an equitable ECE system for our children. Each participant will receive individualized coaching, leadership training, and incentives. Participants will be selected in 2025.
