STR-TA Requests Coming in Strong, Communities Working
to Address the Opioid Overdose Crisis
The first few months of the State Targeted Response Technical Assistance (STR-TA) initiative provided insight into how much help is needed in local communities on the prevention, treatment and recovery of opioid use disorder. As a result, states and territories are responding to the STR-TA request center for innovative approaches to meet the need with the help of 417 consultants who are on board to lend their assistance to the effort locally to address this healthcare crisis.

The STR-TA grant, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry with a coalition of national professional organizations, is providing local expertise and technical assistance to better prepare the healthcare and general community in confronting this public health crisis.

Community in Crisis: A Collaborative Approach to Responding to the Opioid Epidemic
Webinar description: The Port City community is known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalks, historic river-walk district, and the largest domestic television and movie production facility outside of California. In April of 2016, the city of Wilmington also became known for something else; the top city in the nation for opioid misuse.

When CastLight health published the survey naming Wilmington as the top city in the nation for opioid misuse, the community responded with an opiate harm reduction initiative focused on a system’s approach.  [Learn more]

NIDAMED Offers New OUD Resource for Clinicians
NIDAMED has launched a new resource for clinicians who use medications to treat patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) - Science to Medicine: Medication Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder.

Science to Medicine (STM) is a web resource that summarizes the latest research on medication treatment for OUD and includes brief, informative tips from clinicians who have implemented it into their practice settings.

NIDAMED interviewed six clinicians (MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs) who are successfully providing medication treatment for OUD in federally qualified health centers (FQHC), primary care, emergency medicine, and adolescent medicine settings to share their expertise with others—and provide encouragement so that other clinicians can offer these treatments, as well.

  New "ADDICTIONary" Treatment and Recovery Glossary
Created in Hopes of Reducing Stigma
Facing Addiction, a PCSS Steering Committee member, and the Recovery Research Institute (RRI) have develoed ADDICTIONary, a comprehensive glossary of key terms concerning addiction and recovery. The purposed of the glossary is to promote the use of unified terminology so the medical community can strike from its vocabulary any terms that are unsuitable and stigmatizing for all who are struggling with addiction, whether individuals, families, or communities.

CPDA Conference Slated for Aug. 2
The Chemistry and Pharmacology of Drug Abuse (CPDA) Conference is an annual conference that takes place on the Northeastern University campus. The Conference brings together top medicinal chemists and pharmacologists to discuss the latest in drug abuse research, and how this research applies to the design and testing of future pharmacotherapies that treat drug addiction.
