You've selected your state finalist...now what?


We are excited to host the Poetry Out Loud State Competition and look forward to receiving your schools state finalist's registration. To help us get the information we need in a timely fashion, please encourage your student to submit their registration by February 17, 2023.

Please Note: The 2023 state finals will be held on March 11, 2023. To have your school's winner participate in the state finals, they will need to be registered in our system by February 17, 2023, plan accordingly.

POEM REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS


  • The order of poems cannot be changed once they have been submitted.


  • At the state and national competitions, students must meet the following criteria with their poem selections: One poem must be 25 lines or shorter, and one must have been written BEFORE the 20th century. The same poem may be used to meet both requirements and more than one poem can meet these requirements.


  • Eligible poems can be found online. In addition, any poem in the printed anthology is eligible for the competition even if it is not available online.


  • Not all of these poems have streaming permissions. Therefore, some of the recitations may not be able to be streamed or broadcasted. If you would like to know if your poem selection is able to be live streamed/broadcasted please email the event organizer at lmlaubach@usf.edu.

Poetry Out Loud Gets Original winners to be announced March 7.


The University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus is partnering once again with the literary non-profit Keep St. Pete Lit to host Florida Poetry Out Loud GETS ORIGINAL. POLGO is a complementary competition which invites students to submit original poetry for the potential to be included in an anthology that will be printed and disseminated to participants.


Over 51 students submitted original poetry in the competition by the February 7 deadline. Students whose poems are selected for publication will be notified by March 7, and those students will also be invited to participate in a virtual open microphone competition on March 17, 2023 from 6-8pm to read their original poems with the chance to receive cash prizes from $200 to $50 for both content and performance.
