Early construction activities have begun on the new State Highway 16 extension

The Idaho Transportation Department has begun the next phase of construction on the State Highway 16 corridor through the central Treasure Valley.

Overnight I-84 lane restrictions this week and next:

Crews are making room for a work zone to build an I-84 interchange at the southern end of SH-16.

Traffic impacts on I-84 will include overnight lane restrictions between the Black Cat and Robinson overpasses. Eastbound traffic will be shifted toward the center barrier.

  • Eastbound I-84 lanes will be restricted from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., July 18-21
  • Westbound I-84 lanes will be restricted from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., July 24-26

What to expect on the south end of the corridor:

  • When complete, a new interchange will provide access to the central Treasure Valley north of I-84.

  • Franklin Road will be widened at the intersection with SH-16. New signals will be installed.

  • Part of Flamingo Avenue will be moved south to allow room for new I-84 ramps.

Phase 2 construction will continue through 2024

What's included in Phase 2?

  • Approximately 4.5 miles of highway between US-20/26 and I-84.
  • A new I-84 interchange for motorists in the central Treasure Valley.
  • Signalized intersections at Franklin and Ustick roads.
  • Reconstruction of the current signalized intersection at US-20/26.
  • Overpasses over Cherry Lane and McMillan roads.
  • Multiple bridges over irrigation canals and the railroad.
  • Minor adjustments to local roads near SH-16.

State Highway 16 will improve regional mobility, provide access to I-84 in the rapidly growing central Treasure Valley, and improve commutes for thousands of motorists.
