New Nationwide Analysis Provides Clearest Picture Yet of Recidivism Rates

Second Chance Month is here, and it’s a time to reflect on the challenges people face in the justice system and how states can accelerate recent progress to reduce recidivism and make our communities safer and healthier.

Nationally, the recidivism rate has dropped about 20% in the past decade, and nearly 75% of people avoid reincarceration for at least 3 years—the critical window when recidivism is mostly likely to occur.

But no two states are the same.

The CSG Justice Center's new 50-state analysis provides the clearest picture yet of where progress is happening and where recidivism rates are moving in the wrong direction.
