State Rep. Ford's New Bill

Since 2015, Ford has continued to push the new state law

State Representative Ford has introduced a new bill in Illinois aimed at changing state law to allow voters the ability to recall the mayor of Chicago. This legislative proposal seeks to give Illinois residents more control over their elected officials by providing a mechanism for removing a sitting mayor through a recall process. If passed, the bill would empower voters to initiate a recall election, offering a new level of accountability

 for Chicago's leadership.

Chicago's mayor can't be recalled under Illinois law. A new bill aims to change that.

It is a movement gaining strength on several fronts: a push to establish a recall election for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

There is no provision for such an election under Illinois state law, but Representatives Anthony De Lucca and LaShawn Ford this week introduced House Bill 1084, which would create a process for clear and effective process for doing so.

“I think there is a push now much greater than It’s ever been,” said Ford, a fellow Democrat, who in the past has worked closely with Johnson.

Man behind effort to recall Chicago's mayor says he's not ‘some dude from the suburbs'

The idea of allowing a recall of Chicago’s mayor is not a new one. State Rep. LaShawn Ford, who supports the current mayor, first introduced it in Springfield back in 2016. He has re-introduced it three times since then, including while he was running for mayor himself.

"Sometimes things are so bad that voters have lost the confidence, and the trust in the elected official should not have to wait four years to deal with an elected official that has lost that trust," Ford said.

Boland will kick off his petition drive next week with a news conference. He said he is thinking about asking the mayor to attend.

Petition drive launched to give Chicago voters power to recall mayor

Mayor Brandon Johnson has his hands full with the migrant crisis, a persistent robbery surge, negotiations on a new teachers’ contract and an increasingly restive City Council. Now, he faces another potential, but much smaller, headache: a recall.

A former technology salesman who lives in Lake View has formed a political action committee to raise money and at least begin the formidable challenge of putting a binding referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot asking Chicago voters whether they want the power to recall their mayor.

Daniel Boland said the recall effort is about “helping and empowering” the people of Chicago — not about “hurting” Johnson. But he acknowledged he’s disappointed with the mayor’s performance.

Push to Give Chicago Voters Power to Recall Mayor Raises Less Than $300 in 3 Months

The push to give voters the power to recall the mayor of Chicago raised less than $300 since the initiative was announced three months ago, according to records filed with state election officials.

Despite a flurry of media attention after Daniel Boland announced the creation of the Committee for Chicago Mayor Recall, a required campaign finance report filed late Monday with the Illinois State Board of Elections showed just $258.47 in contributions.

With 20 days to go before the initiative faces a deadline of Aug. 5 to file at least 56,464 signatures to put the question to Chicago voters on the Nov. 5 ballot, the committee has just $83.47 on hand after spending $175, according to the report.
