Amazing talent, Great Goal Scoring, in the '05 Div
The 2005 division featured 10 state teams and was the youngest division at State Wars to split into AAA and AA playoff brackets. So at the conclusion of the 4 game round robin, the top 4 seeded teams would advance to the AAA playoffs, while the next 6 teams advanced to play in their own separate AA playoff. So each team would play a minimum of FIVE games while eight of the ten teams would play at least SIX games at State Wars. Talk about a lot of hockey!

The '05s were represented with state teams from: Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Southern California (2 teams), and Wisconsin. There was also one "mixed state team" named Team Bauer, made up of players from Wisconsin and Iowa.  At the conclusion of round robin play there would be only to undefeated teams, as both Southern California (purple) and Missouri would finish 4-0. Michigan would lose a close one to Missouri and finish 3-1, but showed they were right there with them. Wisconsin, Colorado and Southern California (white) would all finish 2-2 and were fighting for that final seed into the AAA playoffs (which to some was great and to some maybe a curse into itself, as they would have to face a very tough So Cal squad in the first round). Illinois, New York, and Team Bauer all had a mix of some younger players and would finish 1-3, and Georgia would round things out with an 0-4 record. Matthew Mania (IL) would lead the division in points (19) and goals (18).  Philippe Lalonde (So Cal), Jason Piwowarcyzk (MO), and Jason Zaccari (So Cal) would all lead the division in most assists (6).  On the goalie front, Ethan Woolcott (So Cal) would not allow a goal through round robin play, Austin Drayna (WI) would lead the division in saves (63) and Christopher Panza (NY) and Leland Alvarez (GA) would each face the most shots in the division (87).

The AAA playoffs would begin with #4 seed Wisconsin meeting the #1 seed Southern California (purple). So Cal looked untouchable through the round robin play and coach Peter Dale knew he had his hands full with the best team from out west.  Wisco would play well but So Cal just had too much fire power and controlled the puck so much that it would be hard to create many chances against them. Behind two goal performances from both Francois Devilliers and Ty Henricks, So Cal would win 6-0 and wait to meet their opponent for the AAA crown.  Wisconsin goaltender, Austin Drayna played awesome in the loss, facing nearly 30 shots.  The other AAA semi final would be a rematch for two very evenly matched squads, Missouri and Michigan.  The first time around, Missouri had squeaked out a 4-3 victory, but coach Manon Rheaume had different plans this time. Michigan would come out fast as Chase Ben-Ezra (MI) would score twice in the first half, giving Michigan a 2-0 lead.  Missouri would score 3 of the next 4 goals, as Shaun Sapienza, Carson Mitchell, and Nicholas Puricelli would get Missouri back in the game, only to be disappointed when Daxton Lucidi (MI) would bury a feed from Gavin Cherry (MI), which would end up being the winner. A quick amazing game note, all 5 2nd half goals were scored in under 3 minutes, but none were scored in the final 7 minutes of the game!  Michigan would win 4-3 this time around and meet Southern California in the AAA final, meanwhile Missouri would play Wisconsin for the bronze medal.  Joy Dunne (MO) who seems to be able to do it all, would save 19 of the 23 shots she faced.

The great thing about having a bronze medal game is that another team gets to leave on a "high" after a win. It is crazy to think that many players in the silver medal pics are crying or look visibly upset, meanwhile the kids in the bronze photos are generally smiling ear to ear.  The 2005 AAA bronze medal game would belong to Missouri as they would put together a strong effort led by their all star Jason Piwowarcyzk (MO), who would put together a 6 point effort!  Tanner Walos scored the lone Wisco goal, assisted by Samuel Evert (WI).  Once again Austin Drayna (WI) would get bombarded with shots (31) but keep his team in it as long as he could.

The AAA championship game would leave little doubt as to who the top '05 team in the country was last summer, as Southern California would once again put together an impressive game. Long time coach Scott Accongio would keep his foot on the gas for most of the game, pushing his players to play hard.  So Cal stud Philippe Lalonde (So Cal) would score 7 points in the effor and take home the "Alkali Hockey Most Valuable Player Award", as So Cal would cruise to a 10-2 victory and would enjoy the long trip back out west with beautiful gold hanging around their necks.  Noah Ziskie (MI) and Matthew Waring (MI) would be in the minority of players able to score on Woolcott this tourney.  Dakoda Rheaume (MI) would play admirably in net, but would be under attack most of the game.

The AA playoffs would kick off as well and there would be no less excitement or intensity in these games. The #5 seeded Team Bauer, made up of some great players from Wisconsin and Iowa, would take on #8 seeded Team Georgia. Iowa standout Jase Stanbrough (IA), would score 4 goals while hometown buddy Hunter Shepherd (IA) would add 3 helpers.  Brayden Curry (GA) would have an awesome game for Team Georgia, recording a hat trick in the losing cause. Bauer would win by an 8-4 score.

In the other AA playoff, Illinois and New York would have a battle of their own, as New York would try to find an answer for Michael Mania (IL). Unfortunately for Team New York this would not be an easy task as Mania (IL) would score 5 goals leading his team to a 8-5 win.  Chase Altman (IL) would add to the scoring as well with a pair for Illinois.  New York would get a great effort from a very young squad and Peter Abazis (NY) would have his best game of the tourney, scoring a hat trick!  Christopher Panza (NY) would face a ton of tough shots (many by Mania) and keep his team close.

The AA semi finals would begin with a great match and upset, as Illinois would knock out a very good Southern California team. Michael Mania (IL) would once again be the big story for his team, as he would score 2 goals in the opening minutes of the game and set the pace. Southern California would battle back, led by a 3 goal performance by Brendan Vincent (So Cal) and Nolan-James Mix (So Cal) playing playmaker (3 assists).  In the end, Illinois would win by a 7-5 score.  Both goaltenders, Henry Bennett (So Cal) and Parks Taylor (IL) would face a ton of tough shots in this one.

Our other AA semi final would also be a nail biter and a tale of two different halves.  This time around Team Bauer would jump out to a lead scoring 3 of the first 4 goals of the game, all scored by Jase Stanbrough (IA). I don't know what coach John Ingrum told his squad at half time, but it worked for sure, as they would come out looking like a totally different squad.  Reece Peterson (CO) would get things started immediately and this quick goal seemed to give his team life.  Brolen Kooker (IA) would answer right back however, but after that goal Colorado would start pouring it on. Daniel Macleish (CO) would complete a hat trick of his own, leading the "Rocky Mountain State" to a close 6-4 win.  Garrett Lindsey, Lukas Wild, and  Matt Hambrick would all make big plays in this come from behind win for Colorado.  Alexander Niederhauser (CO) would make big saves when needed, helping Colorado advance to the championship game.

The 2005 AA bronze medal game is a perfect example of what makes State Wars so amazing, as players from Southern California would be playing against a team made up of players from Wisconsin and Iowa. I am willing to bet that none of these players have ever crossed paths before, but it is great to see players meeting for the first time and getting to know one another on and off the rink.  Team Bauer would save their best game for their last as they would play a terrific game and take home their first ever State Wars medals with a 5-2 victory over Team Southern California (white).  Once again Jase Stanbrough (IA) and Hunter Shepherd (IA) would lead the way.  Leon Garrett (So Cal) and Darin Dorsett (So Cal) would score in the losing effort.

The AA championship game in the 2005 division would see two terrific teams with great offenses meeting up, as Colorado would meet Illinois. Neither team disappointed the fans, as 16 goals would be scored in this game.  Illinois would lead at half by a 6-4 score, but the 2nd half would belong to Illinois. Matthew Mania (IL) must watch a lot of Patrick Kane back home, because he would look like him most of the game, scoring an incredible EIGHT goals and taking home MVP honors.  Illinois would capture the AA championship by a 11-5 score.  Garrett Lindsey (CO) would record a hat trick for Colorado but it wouldn't be enough on this day.

Our hope is that everyone in attendance had a terrific time win or lose. State Wars is about so much more than just the play between the whistles. It is about representing where you come from and taking pride in that, something that should be taught at an early age. It is also about playing with different players from around the state or province and making tons of new friendships. It is also a special time for families to spend together and hopefully create life long memories that we can all look back at one day.

Thank you for making State Wars Hockey so special for us and please help spread the word to others about this event, as we strive each year to get bigger and better!
