State Farm Homeowner Insurance No Longer an Option in California

Last week, you may have been surprised to hear State Farm’s announcement: it will no longer continue writing homeowner policies in California. Are you already a State Farm customer? Don’t worry, this change only applies to new homeowner policies, not existing policies.

State Farm is not the first CEA participating insurer (PI) that has decided to cease writing new homeowner policies. Allstate stopped writing new homeowners, condo, and commercial insurance policies in November 2022. Both PIs cite reasons such as increases in construction costs, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a tough reinsurance market for this change. Like CEA, other insurance companies are faced with the challenge of keeping insurance affordable while responsibly managing risk.

State Farm’s full statement is available here.

A new policy regarding Board Participation will be issued through PolicyTech this week. Staff will be required to read and acknowledge (and, if applicable, request approval for participation) by Friday, 6/15.

Our Board Participation Policy relates to instances where a CEA employee participates on a board for an outside entity as a representative of the CEA. Other board and committee representation, e.g., participation in a professional society as a member of that professional society, is included in and covered by the Inconsistent and Incompatible Activities Statement (which staff should have already read and acknowledged).

In addition to this new policy, staff has recently sent other items to review, including Religious Accommodations and Secondary Employment. Please log into PolicyTech to ensure that you are up-to date with your assignments to ensure we are all looped in on policies and procedures! Please contact Shannon McEuen with any questions.

Happy Pride!

Pride Month began as a commemoration of the Stonewall Uprising in New York in 1969, and is celebrated every June. Pride is considered the beginning of gay activism and other civil rights movements. Created to honor the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, these celebrations often include parades, parties, festivals and picnics.

Tribute to Tina

by Charlotte Fadipe

June is Black Music month, so it is fitting to note the passing of the icon Tina Turner.

For more than 5 decades Tina’s music sizzled as she rocked across the stage—beginning at a time when few Black women were accepted in this genre.

Even if you are not a fan of her music, it is worth noting that her life story is a great example of resilience and triumph.

Tina was born into a share-cropping family in the segregated South, performed on the chitlin circuit, endured poverty, and survived years of domestic abuse. When she escaped her tormenter, she had just 36 cents to her name, but like a phoenix she rose from the brink of financial ruin to relaunch her career, in her mid-40s, embracing Buddhism along the way. Press reports estimate that she had amassed a fortune of $250 million when she died last month.

A trailblazer who won eight Grammy Awards, Tina was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Twice. Her worldwide sold-out concerts were high-octane affairs (about 180,000 people attended her 1988 Rio de Janeiro concert!). Yet away from the limelight, the ‘Queen of Rock and Roll’ spent the last few years living quietly and happily with her second husband, Erwin, at their home in Switzerland. According to press reports, the couple didn’t act like ‘superstars’ but a ‘normal’ couple when they were in town. He loved her so much that he donated one of his kidneys to her when she fell ill in 2017. The tributes are still pouring in for Tina, who died at 83. She was ‘Simply The Best.’

State Farm News and the Nothing-New That Lead to It

This week’s Media Digest has a special section dedicated to the announcement by State Farm that it will no longer be writing new homeowners insurance policies in California. The announcement from State Farm, one of California’s largest home insurers, got a lot of press attention. But the reasons underpinning the announcement are industry trends that we at CEA have been talking about for quite some time. Click the link to read more, along with our usual round-up of news content mentioning CEA and the mitigation efforts we are engaged with.
