VAPA at City Hall
Congrats to our awesome VAPA students who joined Principal Trimis in a presentation to the South Gate City Council at their meeting in October 11. Lizeth Machado, VAPA Student Body President, introduced our school to the mayor and the council, and Adriana Urbano sang "On My Own" from Les Miserables accompanied by Dr. Trimis. The mayor said that in all of his years on the council, he had never experienced such a fine student performance at a council meeting! Ms. Machado was poised and articulate, a great example of our best at VAPA and everything a student body president should be! After the meeting, the students joined Dr. Trimis and the City Council for a photo op. After the presentation, many council members voiced their support for VAPA HS and offered opportunities for performances and other ways for VAPA to get involved in the city of South Gate!

The Year of the Tiger
So much is coming new to VAPA and the Legacy High School Complex this year! Marching Band, Swim Team, Water Polo (B/G), Golf (B/G), Social Media Photo Club, Black Student Union, GSA/LGBTQ Club, Music Tech Class, Korean, Piano, Writing for Musicals Class, K-Pop Club, ACADECA, technical theatre program, and more.....

Korean Comes to VAPA

When you go to Room D-100, you will be greeted by the teacher and students saying “Annyeong Haseyo” 안녕하세요 (Korean ). When you enter the classroom, you will see a wall of Korean vocabulary, posters, Korean has come to South Gate. While it may seem an unlikely combination to some, the Latino and African-American students at The Visual and Performing Arts High School at the Legacy High School Complex, are now learning Korean--- and loving it! The 60 seats for the new Korean classes at VAPA High were all filled within 2 days. The new Korean Language program, funded in part by the Foundation for Korean Language and Culture, is a perfect fit for VAPA. “I had thought about bringing Korean to VAPA after participating in the Foundation’s summer educational trip for administrators. While I knew we could not fund a full-time position as a small school, I knew that ½ Korean and ½ another content area would work. When we searched for a choir teacher to take over the choral program and free up our instrumental music teacher to teach music technology, the search was on for someone who could teach Korean and music. And we found that in our new teacher, Karla Kim. She teaches piano, 2 choir classes, and 3 Korean classes. And it is a great fit for us! Our students are into K-Pop and K-Drama, even though they don’t know the language, so why not take it to the next level? Now they will understand what they are seeing on TV and the music they are listening to!”

VAPA TV Stars
Did you c heck out the KLCS Video Awards when Erick Villarreal (VAPAHS, 2017) was honored and featured in an interview along with our very own video/film educator, Mr. Adolfo! The program aired Sunday, September 4th at 7PM and Monday, September 5th at 6PM.
