Dr. Edward A. Trimis, Principal
Welcome to the "State of the Arts"
It's hard to believe that so much has happened since I became the proud principal of Visual and Performing Arts High School at the Legacy High School Complex in July, and even since our last State of the Arts in November. This newsletter will share some of the highlights of the last 5 months. You may notice something right off the bat in our name; one of the most exciting things this year is our application to become a magnet high school in 2018-19. As we move forward, we will become a district-wide school of choice, available to any student in the LAUSD boundaries, and will provide transportation for students who live 5 or miles away from our school. Becoming a magnet is the next logical step in what has already been a spectacular year of positive growth and change at VAPA. In preparation for our new re-branding as Legacy Visual and Performing Arts Magnet High School, we have adopted a similar name format. So here we go with the updates!  Be sure to click the hyperlinks in RED  at the bottom of each article to see more photos and enrich your experience!

Color Guard Debuts
The Legacy High School Complex and VAPA HS are excited to bring another new performing group to Legacy: Color Guard! CG is performing this Spring as part of the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) circuit and will continue in to the Fall as part of the Legacy/VAPA Marching Band and Color Guard in field show competitions, parades, and football games. Thank you to Coach Andres Olvera, Beyond the Bell, Educare, the Educare Foundation, and Karen Martell, Educare Coordinator, who support the new color guard!

VAPA Performs for PTA
Congratulations, Brianda Palafox (Legacy VAPA, '17) and Erick Villarreal (Legacy VAPA, '17) who performed for the South East PTA Celebration and Awards Event at South Gate Park on March 30. Both seniors are active performers this Spring as they continue to gain performance experience while getting ready to complete requirements to graduate in June.

VAPA Voices at Vocal Jazz Clinic
Members of the VAPA Voices Jazz Singers had the opportunity to participate in a vocal jazz workshop and performance at Cortines High School for the Visual and Performing Arts on March 14. The workshop featured the Mira Costa Community College Frequency Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by Matt Falker. Thank you to all who made it happen-Mr. Falker and his group who led a great clinic; the Cortines Vocal Jazz Ensemble who also performed and hosted the event; Tony White (LAUSD Beyond the Bell Music and Entertainment Coordinator) and his staff; and the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation who brought the event to LAUSD. The packed room of participants, including students and directors from all over the district, was a clear sign vocal jazz is live and well in LAUSD as we all celebrate what would have been Ella Fitzgerald's 100th birthday. Happy Birthday, Ella!

VAPA Voices Jazz Singers and A Cappella Singers Perform
Congratulations to the new VAPA Voices Jazz Choir and A Cappella  Singers who have been extremely active this Spring. The group performed at the SCVA Valencia Jazz Festival on March 10. They also attended the ICCA Regional Finals on March 11; the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) is the national competition produced by Varsity Vocals made familiar to most by the Pitch Perfect films. Congratulations to all 10 college a cappella groups who were amazing and especially to the winner, VAPA's sister a cappella group from UCLA, the ScatterTones! It was a great for our VAPA Voices A Cappella Singers to see the level of excellence they are striving for!

Zone of Choice Articulation and Open House 2017

Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School is in both the South Gate Zone of Choice and the Bell Zone of Choice. Students who live in these areas can choose Legacy VAPA as their high school! Each year, VAPA visits local middle schools, along with the other 2 Legacy schools (STEAM and ISLC), to promote and recruit for the Legacy schools. These are photos from these visits, including Elizabeth Learning Center, South Gate MS, Southeast MS, and more. It was quite a Zone of Choice Recruitment season, starting early in February and ending February 4 at the Legacy Open House.

LDE Promoting VAPA and Legacy Schools
Did you know that LAUSD has some of the most successful and cutting-edge schools in California? Legacy High School Complex is a collection of small specialty high schools that offers three distinct choices for high school students in the South East (South Gate/Bell/Huntington Park), including an international studies high school (International Studies Learning Center), a school focused on STEAM (Science/Technology), and a high school focused on the arts (VAPA HS). The first choice Zone of Choice selection is closed, but students can still enroll in one of the three schools if there is space, and permits may be available. If you want to be a student in the new Legacy Visual and Performing Arts Magnet High School, opening in Fall 2018, enroll now to secure your spot and avoid the rush. Legacy VAPA Magnet High will likely fill to capacity when the Choices Magnet selection begins this Fall. Thank you LAUSD Local District East for supporting our local schools by putting together a promotional campaign which started today with a number of our students being photographed for street banners and interviewed for a promotional video!

Legacy Cheer Having a Great Season
Congratulations to members of the Legacy Cheer Team, who are having a great season! Their first competition took place on Saturday, January 7, at Azusa Pacific University! Legacy would like to give a big thank you to their coaches and supporters! Congratulations also to our South Gate Aztec Cheer Team, the Tigers' "little sisters and brothers" who practice at Legacy, who also competed!

Girls Basketball's Glorious Season
This was basketball season for the record books. After a spectacular season defeating most teams with huge point spreads in the elite Open Division, the Legacy Girls Basketball team came up against a few teams who proved to be unstoppable, at least this year. Both losses were extremely close and happened in the last few seconds of the game. Their State Play-off game against Independence High School in Bakersfield was not an exception. Congratulations to Coach E and the girls for an exciting and impressive season. We are super proud of our Lady Tigers!

Swim Team Comes to Legacy
As our sports program continues to grow and get better and better, we are excited to bring our very first Swim Team to Legacy this year! Our all girls team this year is strong, and Legacy hopes to add a boys team next year when we add water polo to the program!  Thank you Coach Jessica Curiel for being our founding coach!

Well-attended and well-played, the game saw the juniors lead the seniors for much of the game until the seniors pulled it out in the last few minutes to win! Thank you for all who participated- the players, the student leaders, and the staff who helped supervise the practices as well as the game!

ACADECA Comes to VAPA
Congratulations to our first ever Legacy VAPA High School Academic Decathlon Team (ACADECA) who completed their season this year with two Saturday competitions at Roybal HS, starting with the January 28 event which included an interview, a speech, and an essay, and concluding with the Quiz and the Super Quiz On March 4. I am so extremely proud of these young men and women and their coach, Mr. Avalos, on many, many levels. I am proud of our students and their coach for doing something that has never been done before, which is a feat in and of itself. It takes courage, strength, hard work, and faith to do something brand new. I am proud of our ACADECA students and their coach for putting all the time in to make this happen. Countless hours at weekend workshops and after school, often putting in long study sessions after a full day of school which, at our school, typically includes one or more rehearsals or performances. And I am proud of our students and their coach for being a testament to how anything is really possible with our kids. They may not realize it, but they're breaking all kinds of stereotypes about what our kids can and can't do. They are a testament to the power of study and hard work. They're shining examples of how we are closing the achievement gap in our community and our school. And, lastly, to quote a line from High School Musical, this is the start of something big, the beginning of our ACADECA journey. I'm sure it will get bigger, better, and even more successful. It is great time to be a part of our amazing Legacy VAPA family. I also want to give a really big thank you to the parents, supporters, teachers, and my AP, Ms. Noriega who helped realize our vision of starting an ACADECA program! When you see one of our ACADECA students or their coach at school, congratulate them on a job well done. They make us all proud!
