State of the Birds 2025

In Case You Missed It: State of the Birds 2025

The U.S. State of the Birds Report 2025 was recently unveiled at the 90th annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The bad news: "five years after the 3 billion birds lost research, America is still losing birds. A 2019 study published in the journal Science sounded the alarm—showing a net loss of 3 billion birds in North America in the past 50 years."* The good news: Manomet's Dr. Stephen Brown, Dr. Rob Clay, and Senior Shorebird Scientist Shiloh Schulte contributed to the report's shorebird research and show that recovery is possible. Page 5 in the report highlights several aspects of our work, including some of our 9 flagship shorebird species, such as Whimbrel satellite tracking, critical Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) site protection, and the American Oystercatcher recovery initiative.

Hope in the Steppe: Conservation of the Magellanic Plover as a Binational Effort

The Magellanic Plover (whose Latin name is Pluvianellus socialis) is no ordinary shorebird—it’s a rare gem facing serious threats and one of Manomet's nine flagship shorebird species. Listed as Endangered and Vulnerable, this unique species needs our help. We sat down with Germán Montero, Executive Director of Asociación Ambiente Sur, to chat about what makes this bird so special, the efforts to protect its future, and a surprising connection it might have with Violet from The Incredibles!

Giving Wings to Conservation:

Meet María Florencia Padrón

Have a great idea to protect shorebirds but aren’t sure where to start? Sometimes, a little support can turn a vision into real change. That’s exactly what the Manomet Small Grants Program for Shorebird Conservation in the Neotropics is all about—helping young conservationists launch projects that make a difference for shorebirds and their habitats.

Meet Argentina's María Florencia Padrón, whose research is shining a light on a little-known but potentially vital shorebird stopover: Patagonia’s Coyle River Estuary. This remote site may be a hidden gem for migrating shorebirds, but without data, its conservation is uncertain. With her Small Grant, María is working to change that.

In the Field Spotlight

Purple Sandpiper and American Oystercatcher sightings in Boston Harbor | Photos: Manomet / Brad Winn; Shiloh Schulte; Mike Molnar; Lisa Schibley

Liana DiNunzio, one of Manomet’s talented Shorebird Biologists, recently led the team on an exciting Purple Sandpiper Survey in the outer Boston Harbor Islands. To our delight, these resilient shorebirds were right at home in their winter habitat!

The Purple Sandpiper has the northernmost winter range of any shorebird, thriving along rocky Atlantic shorelines, jetties, and breakwaters—especially farther north along the U.S. coast and into Canada. Its name comes from a rarely seen, iridescent purple sheen on its wing feathers, adding a touch of magic to this hardy bird.

Out and About Spotlight

The world is their oyster... at AQUACULTURE2025, the globe's largest aquaculture conference. This year in New Orleans, Dr. McMahan (3rd from left) helped lead an inspiring session to highlight women-led work to drive innovation in fishing communities. Photo: Steve VanderKooy

Women Leading the Future of Sustainable Fisheries!

Dr. Marissa McMahan, Manomet's Senior Director of Fisheries, presented some creative and groundbreaking work in Maine in a talk entitled "Promotion and Marketing through Innovative Fishing Community-focused Projects," supported by NOAA Fisheries. She joined an incredible panel of women shaping the future of sustainable seafood while at AQUACULTURE2025 in March.

No Boundaries!

In February we launched our No Boundaries campaign, focused on the Magic & Wonder of Shorebirds. There are no boundaries in what we can accomplish together to recover these birds. Protecting shorebirds means safeguarding not only their future but also the health of our planet’s ecosystems. Through this shorebird campaign, we’re rallying support to ensure these remarkable birds continue to inspire wonder for generations to come. Join us in making a difference—because healthy shorebirds mean a healthy planet. READ MORE >>
